The data shows characteristics of claims for benefit paymentsmade for the week containing the 12th of each month. It includesjobless persons filing claims for unemployment insurance under theHawaii Employment Security Law and persons filing claims in theState of Hawaii against another state. The data excludes thoseclaimants filing under the Extended Benefit program, and federalprograms covering ex-federal workers and ex-military personnel.

Beginning with the 2001-2002 Characteristics of the InsuredUnemployed publication, there is a new format for the Industry andOccupation categories. The Standard Occupational Classification(SOC) system replaced the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT)coding system for occupations. The North American IndustryClassification System (NAICS) is being used to designate thedifferent industries instead of the Standard Industrial Classification(SIC) system. For trend analysis purposes, the data may not becomparable.

Newgraduates, re-entrants to the work force, newly arrived immigrants, persons who quit their jobs or have refused suitable work or werefired for misconduct are some examples of job seekers whosenumbers are absent from this report.
