- Based on the rule book and mechanics manual, they are required.- Other than seeing the clock, its the only way in which timing mistakes can be corrected (see Case Book 5.10.2)- By counting, an official can accurately rule on violations (start and stop counts, as needed)

Rule 9, Section 2, Article 4Once the throw in begins, the ball shall be released on a pass directly into the court before 5 seconds have elapsed.

a in his/ her frontcourt, hold the ball for five seconds or dribble the ball for five seconds

b in his/ her frontcourt, control the ball for five seconds in an area enclosed by screening teammates

PENALTY The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation.

Rule 9, Section 8A player shall not be, nor may his/ her team be, in continuous control of a ball which is in his/her backcourt for 10 seconds

PENALTY The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation. (NOT AT DIVISION LINE!)

10 SECOND VIOLATION - BACKCOURT1. Terminates when ALL three things reach the frontcourt: the left foot, the right foot and the ball

2. Terminates upon granting a time out or ruling a violation or foul and a new 10 second count will begin(See references - Rule 4.35.2 & Case Book 4.4.1)

3. If Team A achieves frontcourt status and the ball is deflected to the backcourt, a new count begins when the ball achieves backcourt status (when the ball touches the floor.)

When does the 10 second backcourt count end?- Count should be visible from the trail official- Starts when touched inbounds in the backcourt- Terminated when front court status is achieved (if ball is in flight on a pass from the back court to the front court the ball still has back court status.)

- Count should be initiated from trail official - Count should be visible, but not emphatic starts at waist, toward thigh- Count starts when the ball is at the disposal of the free thrower- Count terminates when the ball is released on a try for goal

The try for goal shall be made within 10 seconds after the ball has been placed at the disposal of the free thrower at the free-throw line. This shall apply to each free throw. (Rule was implemented to prevent game stalling.)
