CHARLES DARWINWas an English naturalist who gained great fame within his lifetime as well as long after his death for the development of evolutionary theory. Most of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory is contained in the book Origin of Species.

HE WAS BORN IN.....Charles Darwin was bornin Shrewsbury, ShropshireEngland in 1809. He wasthe fifth of six children of awealthy doctor and financier andalthough his family wasUnitarian He attended theAnglican Shrewsbury School asA boarder in 1818.

THEIR STUDIES:In 1825 he was an apprentice doctor atthe University of EdinburghMedical school but he did not like thework involved. In his secondyear he joined the Plinian Society, astudent natural history group thatengaged in discussions of radicalmaterialism. He assisted RobertEdmund Grant in the research ofMarine invertebrates' anatomy and lifeCycle and in 1827 presented one of hisown findings of black spores to thePlinian Society. Darwin also assistedcollections at the University Museum.

Darwin's voracious interest in natural historyAngered his father and he was sent to Christ'sCollege at Cambridge in 1828 to study tobecome a parson but was unqualified to takeanything but the Ordinary degree course. Atthis time he took up beetle collecting under theinfluence of his cousin William Duncan Foxand again was noted for his discoveries andwas published in Steven's Illustrations ofBritish Entomology. He ended up doing ratherwell in the ordinary courses and graduatedtenth in his class in 1831.
