Charles W. Jarvis (1866 – 15 July 1932)
Born at St. Eleanors, Prince Edward Island in 1866, Charles W. Jarvis moved to Fort
William when he was 16. For 20 years Jarvis was employed at the Ray Street Bank. Even from
a young age, Charles Jarvis had an interest in his community and politics and at the age of 19
he became an alderman for Fort William. For eight years, 1911 to 1919, Jarvis was the
provincial representative (M.P.P.) for the Fort William riding. He was also a charter member of
the Board of Trade and played a prominent role in obtaining an efficient utility system for the
city. During the war, Charles Jarvis played an active role in the community when trying to figure
out what to do with the enemy aliens in the district. Along with other members of the community
he was a part of committees that promoted work for aliens in the district as well as writing letters
to people in government to promote the same thing.
