Comments: Moonshine is a “Stand Out” all around bull – a double polled bull with tremendous length and depth and is smooth through the shoulders with an excellent temperament. An easy doing bull with great skin type. This bull has great structure and confirmation which led him to win the 19–21 month Charolais bull class at Beef Australia 2018. He was also sashed Champion at a number of local shows. First calf out of a heifer that has amazing volume. We highly recommend this bull as a Stud Sire. Part of the 2018 Show Team. Top 5% - 200 day growth, Mature Cow Weight. Top 10% - 400 & 600 day growth, Milk, Carcase Weight.

River Run Charolais is pleased to present a draft of 15 quality bulls this year. This year we are leading the sale with our first run, Lots 1 – 8, starting off with our show team with Lot 1 being an outstanding son of Ascot Gunn – one not to be missed up first in the sale. Our second run of bulls can be found at Lots 35 – 41. This year we are offering the first sons by our Homozygous sire - River Run Joker. Lots 2 & 3 are his sons and both are ribbon winners from Beef Australia 2018. We have 4 of his sons in the sale and all have his great temperament and carcase attributes. Ascot Gunn is represented again this year by 5 bulls, all of which carry his impeccable temperament, length and doing ability. 2018 will see the last of the Palgrove Freedom bulls, having 4 in the sale, great growth and coat type in these bulls. We also have a tremendous son of Keys All State in Lot 5 – a bull that has a bombproof temperament and impressive carcase traits. Again we have competed in a number of prime cattle competitions this year with broad ribbon success with our cattle. We were lucky enough to have the Champion Heifer carcase and the second place winner in the Carcase competition at the Kilcoy Show with purebred Charolais heifers, both being sired by Palgrove Freedom. Our cattle that we have in the prime competitions are the same genetics as the bulls that are in this sale so we know that these bulls will perform. The bulls have been prepared on oats and Riverina Maintenance pellets. Our bulls are breedplan recorded, fully vaccinated and semen & morphology tested and we are JBAS 7. Should you wish to pre-inspect the bulls or require any further information on the bulls please call Tania on 0428 256 558.

On behalf of DIAMOND L CHAROLAIS we welcome you to our 6th Coolabunia sale. Over the past few years we have work on producing quiet, polled bulls without compromising on quality, we believe we have achieved both. This year we are offering a draft of 14 bulls of which 9 are polled or scurred including 1 HOMOZYGOUS Polled (LOT 43) and 4 are red factor. This year’s bulls are sired by Ascot Juggernaut (Beef Australia 2015 and RNA 2015 Grand Champion Charolais bull and sold for $30,000), LT Bluegrass, Necessaire (Full French), Serenity Gusto and Glenlea Jimmy. This line up of bulls we feel are equal or better than any draft of bulls we’ve offered for sale. We believe that these bulls are a good mix with different types suitable for different breeding requirements. The bulls this year will have all the vaccinations including 7in1, 3 germ blood, pestie and vibro. The bulls have been run as 1 herd, they have been worked on horseback and with dogs. They are bred in the ticks and are off forest country. The last 6 weeks of their preparation will be on oats which allows for minimal let down periods. This year because of the drought we will be offering agistment on irrigated oats through to November for buyers who purchase our bulls. Enquiries and inspections welcome call Greg Lee on 0418 622 578.

Charnelle Charolais are delighted to offer 17 industry focused Charolais bulls for sale this year at the “Classic”. The draft consists of 10 Polled bulls and 5 Polled/Scurred bulls. Six of the Polled bulls are Red Factor. The bulls have all run together and have had the same feeding except lots 17 & 28 who have done considerable work in our herd. The whole draft was weaned on to rye grass last year with a small amount of supplement feeding in October to December. A good season from mid-January enabled us to graze all the bulls on improved pasture without supplement until Aptil 1st when all the bulls were brought in for sale preparation where they get unlimited access to grassy lucerne silage, grass hay & a 50/50 grain sorghum – wheaten hay ration. Our lot 17 bull, Man Power is an example of what we are striving for at Charnelle, Growth, Easy Calving, Good Temperament, Length, Softness and Predictability. Lot 28 (Nick) is one of six DÁngely grandsons in our draft. Nick is a Polled bull with tremendous punch & good temperament that we have used in our herd. Another feature of our draft is the six Red Factor Soft, Polled, bulls which begin at lot 20, Manager who is a Gallway son and is DNA Tested Homozygous Polled. The whole Charnelle female herd has been tested Johnes and Pesti Negative. All sale bulls have been tested PI Negitive. Comments: Tidy young bull that will get the job done. Max is double polled and has naturally fine hair. Great temperament and overall composition.

Welcome to our 2018 bull sale. This year Silverwood are offering just 6 young bulls that have been selected for traits in favour of early maturing, low birth weight, shape and temperament. 5 of the six bulls offered are polled and 2 are red factor. Sires used are Pondaova Chad and Charnelle Jester - both with exceptional low birth weight bloodlines. With the Chad offspring you will find smooth coated bulls that are proven to be hardy and efficient sires. This is our first offering of Jester calves and both are out of first calf heifers. We have been impressed with Jester's offspring in their ability to be early maturing and low birth weight. Bulls will be prepared on a silage/hay mix with limited access to grain. As always presale inspections are most welcome at Silverwood, Call Rodney (0408717974) or Lindsay (0409677611) to make an appointment.

balance of fat and muscle. His dam has been a great cow for us and her bull calves have always been in our top priced sires every year as well as a couple heifers retained within the stud. You won't find a Charolais bull with as fine a coat as this fella and he is a great opportunity to get some Euro bloodlines in places you thought you couldn't run a Charolais bull. Double polled.

Charolais BREEDPLAN EBV Explanations EBVs An animal's breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree links between the groups. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as + ive or - ive differences between an individual animal's genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600-Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit 50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed. The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular animals should be viewed as being "above or below breed average" for a particular trait. Whilst EBVs provide the best basis for the comparison of the genetic merit of animals reared in different environments and management conditions, they can only be used to compare animals analysed within the same analysis. Consequently, Charolais BREEDPLAN EBVs cannot be validly compared with EBVs for any other breed. Although EBVs provide an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for a range of production traits, they do not provide information for all of the traits that must be considered during selection of functional animals. In all situations, EBVs should be used in conjunction with visual assessment for other traits of importance (such as structural soundness, temperament, fertility etc). A recommended practice is to firstly select breeding stock based on EBVs and to then select from this group to ensure that the final selections are otherwise acceptable. EBVs are published for a range of traits covering fertility, calving ease, milking ability, growth, carcase merit and docility. When using EBVs to assist in selection decisions it is important to achieve a balance between the different groups of traits and to place emphasis on those traits that are important to the particular herd, markets and environment. One of the advantages of having a comprehensive range of EBVs is that it is possible to avoid extremes in particular traits and select for animals with balanced overall performance. Calving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

CE % Dir = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age. CE % Daughters = Daughters' Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters' calving ease indicates how easily that sire's daughters will calve at two years of age.

Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination and hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter's milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability. Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal's genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days. Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable. Selection Indices Charolais selection indices are calculated for three market specifications, namely, Domestic, Export and Northern Terminal. Index values are reported as EBVs, in units of relative earning capacity ($’s) for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values. Note that different types of animals can give similar profit values, so consideration should be given to both the index and the component EBVs when selecting animals for a particular production system. More information is available on selecting animals using a selection index. The Index values are derived using BreedObject technology. More information is available from the BreedObject web site. Domestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. Export Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. Northern Terminal Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in Northern Australia (ie Brahman cows) targeting the production of grass finished steers for the Jap Ox market. Steers are sold direct to slaughter at 630 kg (345 kg HSCW and 5 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months. All progeny are slaughtered. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. Accuracy Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the "confidence level" of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease. Accuracy values range from 0-99%. The following guide is given for interpreting accuracy: Accuracy range Interpretation less than 50% Low accuracy. EBVs are preliminary and could change substantially as more performance information becomes available. 50-74% Medium accuracy, usually based on the animal's own records and pedigree. 75-90% Medium-high accuracy. Some progeny information included. EBVs may change with addition of more progeny data. more than 90% High accuracy estimate of the animal's true breeding value. As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal.
