Thank-you! I start this week’s newsletter by saying thank you to our Coolabunia family for all of their support over the last week and a half while I was absent from school. Our staff were able to ensure that everything at school ran smoothly, our students (especially my own class) were adaptive, and parents were supportive. Thank you also for all of the well wishes. I do not enjoy being away from school for extended periods of time, but the incredible support from each member of our school community made this absence easier – it was very much appreciated! Thank you! Farewell Mrs McGilvray

As communicated in last week’s newsletter, Mrs Tanya McGilvray has accepted a transfer to Nanango State School. Tanya will begin at Nanango on

Monday 17 August, which means that this week has been her final week at Coolabunia State School. We thank Tanya for the years that she has

contributed to our school and wish her all the very best for the next stage in her teaching career. We would also like to say farewell to William and Alex

and wish them all the best for the future.

Our Improvement Agenda for 2020

Coolabunia State School’s improvement areas are:

Improved reading outcomes for all students Improved writing outcomes for all students Improved resilience and engagement with learning for all students

This will be achieved through the drivers of consistency of practice and student engagement.

Pause Program This week students started the first lesson in a series that supports them to develop mindfulness skills and behaviours. By practicing these, students develop a greater awareness of their bodies, what is happening around them and how they react to stimulus. Mindfulness is used as a way of helping students to develop their concentration and attention of what is happening right now. This is a very important part of the Pause Program, because without this attention and awareness, students are not able to know when and how to Pause.

In this lesson, students focused on the Pause Posture and mindful breathing. The Pause Posture is all about keeping your body still, sitting up straight,

and having your feet flat on the floor. Being still helps students pay attention to how they are feeling. Also, the Pause Posture links nicely with our

classroom learning behaviour SLANT! Mindful breathing again helps students be still and pay attention. It is also one of the Pause Behaviours that

they can use to calm themselves. Students are encouraged to find an anchor spot, take three deep breaths and use their belly when breathing, not

their chest. You can support your child at home with their mindful breathing by downloading an app such as Smiling Minds (www.smilingmind.com.au),

which contains age appropriate exercises that help children practice their breathing.

Friday 4th September Staff will be participating in professional development. School closed to students.

Weekly Behaviour Focus This week we have been focusing on our school expectations when there is a change in routine. Changes are inevitable and they can alter our routines without warning. What is important, is that we are resilient and choose behaviours that will assist us to cope with these changes – for exam-ple, Pause Behaviours or talking to someone about how we feel. At our school we support students to accept the responsibility that they have over their choices and reinforce that, even when our routines are changed, they must follow the school expectations of Respect Self, Respect Others, Re-spect Things & Places.

Next week our behaviour focus will be Kindness Matters at Coolabunia. This behaviour focus highlights the importance of treating others in a

respectful way. It also links with next week’s Pause lesson which is all about heartfulness.
