When I lookback on 2012 itwas a veryinteresting year. The west went
from flooding in 2011 to drought thelast half of 2012. The east was verydry in places with feed shortages andhigh prices. The drought in the U.S.A.saw cow numbers continue to declineand it was these lower cow numbersthat have caused the slaughter pricefor cows to bounce back after thetemporary closure of the XL plant.
The early fall calf run was betterthan most were anticipating, as thehigh feed grain prices made locking ina profit impossible. The lack of calvesout in the industry was alsoexperienced with a shorter, smallerrun than normal through manyauction markets. There were many$1,100 dollar calves this fall provingthat pounds definitely paid. TheCharolais calves, at the feeder sales Iwas at, made you feel good abouthaving Charolais. The heavyCharcross calves were the sale topperson a per dollar basis. Sure, some ofthe light weight calves sold for moreper pound, but in total dollars theydid not compare.
At Agribition the commercial cattleshow was smaller and Charolaisdidn’t win overall this year, but a penof 5 Charcross silver steers from theLakeland College, Vermilion, ABweighing 944 lbs. brought the mostmoney of any pen at $1,152 each.
Through all of this, the enthusiasmfelt in Agriculture and the cattlebusiness is exciting. The commercialbred heifer market has been stellarwith heifers selling for more moneythan ever before in some parts of thecountry. How about $3,300 for RedAngus/Simmental cross heifers inSwift Current in early December.Incredible.
The fall show season saw Charolais do very well across thecountry with more numbers in mostof the shows, winning many all-breedchampionships. Thanks again to allthe exhibitors for putting Charolaisout in front of the industry with yourhard work and dedication. Next yearthe National Show is going toEdmonton so I hope you will startplanning now to be there.
The fall female sales have also beenvery strong with a few left to go attime of writing. We have seen notonly some new and young breeders
starting herds again this year, we havealso seen a number of establishedherds expanding their numbers. Thestrong Charolais bull market this pastspring has many shoring up theirnumbers and quality in anticipation ofthe years ahead. Visiting with manybreeders this fall it seems that the bullpens have already been getting awork out with most anticipating aneven stronger sale season next spring.Don’t sell your bull pen short. Thecommercial market is strong and it istime for all of you to realize a niceprofit from the years of hard workinvested in the purebred industry.
Bull sale season is just around thecorner and now is the time to planyour pictures, videos, advertising andpromotion of your bull pen. Craig andI will be hitting the road right afterthe new year so contact us early.
All of us at the Charolais Bannerwant to thank you for the supportover the past year and wish you avery Merry Christmas and may 2013 be an even more profitableCharolais year.
Until next time,Helge

POINTS TO PONDER
2012 c’était une année trèsintéressante lorsque je me reflète.

FROM PAGE 6
Now that it is December, I am starting to see Christmasdecorations going
up reminding me I should probablyget my shopping done. It also meansthat the fall shows are over, provingto have been a good fall for our breedhaving Supreme female at Agribition,as well as good representation at othershows across the country.
Speaking of Agribition, I would liketo send out a huge thank you to thosebreeders who donated semen for ourannual semen auction, as well as thosewho purchased the semen.Contributions from both sides aregreatly appreciated.
Calving followed by bull sales andbreeding are also just around thecorner. This can be an exciting butalso very busy time for breeders. Forthe youth it provides an opportunityto get out and see what breeders haveto offer, and what genetics to possiblyuse on their 4-H or junior projects. How does free semen sound? Thegenetics program is a tremendousopportunity for youth to get theirhands on some superior genetics tobreed their female. Watch for the fulllist of bulls and application form tocome out in January.
Also in January the national boardwill be meeting in Saskatoon toreview our programs. If you have anyquestions, concerns, or ideas
regarding the way conferences run orany of the programs feel free tocontact any of your National Boardmembers. The essay topic will also bedecided so watch for that to be madeavailable in the New Year.
For me the cold days in Decemberlet me look back to summer andCCYA is always a part of that. I knowthat the organizers in Ontario arebusy getting ready for next year and I know like all others, it won’tdisappoint. For updates on theconference, information on all theprograms, or if you have anyquestions or concerns check out thewebsite youth.charolais.com orcontact any of your national board members.

As many of you know, the executivecommittee of the Canadian CharolaisAssociation made the decision not to renewthe contract of general manager Neil Gillies. This was not an easy decision and definitelyone that involved a great deal of discussionand thought on the part of the committee. In the end, there were concerns with therole of the general manager and his abilityto adapt to a changing position. With thehelp of an HR consultant, a fair severancewas offered and the process was handled ina professional manner. We thank Neil forall he has done for our association and wishhim well in his future endeavours.
With this change, comes opportunity togrow as an Association. Moving forward, the first order of business is to re-evaluatethe duties of the general manager. We needto identify the priorities and parameters of the position, as well as define the role ofthe general manager within our association. Not only will the general manager’s role be redefined, I feel it is time to review allthat we do as an association. We havebecome complacent with our position in the industry. As the industry has continuedto change and evolve, we have sat(sometimes on the sidelines) and watchedas others within the industry have passedus by. It is time for us as a breed to becomeleaders again.
During this time of transition the board isworking on other projects as well.Genomics research is definitely one of thehottest topics in the industry and one thatwe need to be a part of in order to improveour breed. The board is definitely taking amore proactive approach when it comes togenomic research. As breeders, we need to
realize the importance of genomics researchand the key contribution we can make; themore samples that are tested and the moredata that is collected now, the moreaccurate this new tool will be in helping usmake breeding decisions in the future.
Another project is by the Public RelationsCommittee. It has produced a newbrochure featuring operations which havesuccessfully used Charolais genetics. Anupdated poster will be available in the NewYear. Both the Public Relations Committeeand the Market Development Committeeare looking for ways to get the bestexposure for the Charolais breed as theindustry continues to change.
Regardless of the changes in the office, the breeders are still in capable hands withtheir registry needs. Lois Chivilo, JudyCummer and Mel Reekie are all available inthe office for assistance. Cynthia Beck isavailable to the French membership as well.
As the New Year approaches, we shouldall look forward with great optimism.Feeder calf sales this past fall were betterthan many expected. With Charcross calvesleading the way, more commercial cow calf producers will be rediscovering ourbreed. This renewed commercial interestshould lead to strong bull sales in thespring, which truly are the back bone of our industry.
The Canadian Charolais AssociationBoard of Directors is dedicated toimproving our Association. We, theCharolais breeders, also need to bededicated in moving this breed forwardand being leaders in the industry.
Season's Greetings,Wade Beck

HERD HEALTH
Purebredbreeders areconstantly strivingfor the perfectreproductive bulland go to great
measures to select for scrotal size. It haslong been accepted that scrotal size isa good measure of sperm production.Larger testicles generally shouldproduce more sperm and the bull onaverage is more fertile. Over timepurebred producers have on averagebeen very successful increasing thetesticular size of bulls in all breeds, with testicular size being moderate tohighly heritable (0.4-.75). There arestill breed differences that areacceptable and various lines withinbreeds will have differences intesticular size. In my opinion, whatneeds to happen now in research islooking at maximum limits in scrotalsize. Over my career testicular sizehas crept up to the point where we arestarting to see a detriment to fertilitywhen yearlings get up over the fortyplus centimeter mark. So there doesappear to be an upper limit for sure.
In regards to testicular developmentresearchers Drs Kastelic and Thundathilat the UCVM (University of CalgaryVeterinary Medicine) found nutritionboth in utero and especially early in life(before puberty) had a profound effecton testicular development. There wasa definite increase in testicular size onbull calves on an adequate nutritionaldiet versus those on a restricted intakediet. The old adage of farmers sayingyou can’t starve the head or testiclesout of an animal is false. Seeing bullcalves on a poor nutritional diet theirhead and horns (if horned) and testiclesdo seem normal size but the opticalillusion is if the animal is thin andstunted those parts automaticallyseem bigger. So the bull calves andtheir mothers have to be on a goodplane of nutrition early especially inthe calves first four months of life. Thisshould work well as this is the sametime cows need to be on a rising planeof nutrition in order to rebreed.
Contrary to this, overfeeding during orafter puberty to try and compensatefor poor growth earlier will have adetrimental effect on sperm productionand testicular size. Too much fat in thescrotum alters the thermoregulatoryeffect and I have seen in my career toomany fat bulls with small scrotal sizeas varying degrees of testiculardegeneration have occurred from thetesticles being too warm for too long. Some purebred producers definitelyget their bulls too fat which is why inmy experience there seems to be ahigher infertility rate with overfit showbulls. There is a positive correlation as back fat measurements go upfertility goes down.
When we look at nutrition not onlyare energy and protein levels criticalbut also trace minerals (micro andmacro minerals) are critical to testiculardevelopment. Proper balancing of theration with careful attention to thecalcium phosphorus ratio as well asadequate levels of the micro mineralssuch as copper zinc and selenium allplay in the equation. The bottom lineis growing cattle need to be on abalanced mineral program throughouttheir lives. We sometimes fail to realizethat especially our bull’s calves undergosuch rapid growth that they canoutstrip their nutritional requirementswhen growing so rapidly. We alsoneed to make sure other aspects arenot robbing nutrition such as internalparasites (worms) or lice. Many yearsago, it was reported that chelatedminerals because of their increasedabsorption would help increase scrotalsize. I found this claim unfoundedand the bottom-line is have yournutritionist balance the ration for yourclass of cattle and the growth ratethey are on and include the vitaminsand minerals in this package. I stateagain that high energy diets postweaning can hinder reproductivedevelopment and function in youngbulls if taken to excess.
Age at puberty will of course affectscrotal size and some bull calves doundergo very rapid testicular growth
from eleven to fifteen months of age.Generally, the greater the body weightleads to reduced age at puberty. Youas purebred breeders have also desiredearly maturing as bulls pass theirsemen tests easier and they can besold at a younger age as a satisfactorybreeder and breed well as a yearling. Some genetic lines do not reachpuberty as early and as a result, testicular development is slower andthey may not pass semen exams untilsome time after or around fifteenmonths of age.
Testicular size is moderately tohighly heritable so depending on thebull, selecting for it should berewarding the majority of times. However keep in mind the cow is halfthe genetic part of the equation so shewill have an influence in the outcomeas well. Some bulls also tend to passtheir genes on more consistently. Ihave seen certain bulls never sire acalf with below average testicles andwhile others are very inconsistent. This is called incomplete dominance.Mistakes have been made purchasingU.S.A. bulls and keep in mind theirscrotal measurement system is muchdifferent. US bulls will measure twoto five cm less in Canada whenmeasured by Canadian veterinariansunder our system. Also some of theold scrotal tapes used to stretch, leading to falsely low measurements.Differences between veterinarians andeven between the same veterinarianmeasuring a bull twice is only one totwo cm because of the newer “reliabull”scrotal tape with the tension device.Arguments are always made thatcertain bulls have longer narrowertesticles and although some variationin shape definitely exists selectionaway from the straight-sided scrotumis desirable.
I have one large herd where wemeasure bulls at 9-10 months age tocull and then again at semen checkingtime (12-13 months) and the growthpatterns though puberty can be veryvariable with all other factors beingsimilar. Testicle growth over the three

FALL SHOW HIGHLIGHTS, CONT. FROM PAGE 17 HERD HEALTH, CONT. FROM PAGE 14
months can vary from a couple of cm toeight cm, which is a huge variation. Bewary purebred breeders that the exactage of yearling bulls is known because, ifyou calve later or most of your bull calveswere born at the end of the calvingseason or calving was moved back andthey average one month younger whenmeasuring then years previous, this willhave a huge difference on average scrotalsize, everything else being equal. In theUS they adjust scrotal measurements allto one year of age. This may help withage discrepancies but from what I haveseen their estimates to adjust are low. This means many bulls bought in the UShave the adjusted scrotal size on anoverly inflated scrotal size score.
The final points are as purebredbreeders be ever cognizant of scrotal sizewhen selecting your herdsires and keepyour average scrotal size around thebreed average or above and you will cullvery few bulls. Look after nutrition asthey are developing and don’t get themtoo fat after puberty and hopefully therewill be no big surprises come semenchecking in the spring.
