Enexis• Enexis is DSO – covering ca. 25% The Netherlands• Regional Distribution Service Operator – network of electrical and gas grids - > 4 million
distribution points - > 100k (passive) devices
• Long history > 50 years of experience of in house automation of devices on closed systems and protocols – starting from remote wired control to automated systems
• From closed distribution networks towards an open distribution network• ICT in house ca. 200 employees
• Huge change in IT from customer/people facing towards sensor/grid facing automation –future will come with sensors
• ICT has a focus on administrative approach to technology• How to innovate and use new technologies? Plenty of ideas and successful pilots
• How to leverage existing knowledge and workforce?
#IoTenergy
Challenges we face…..• Energy transition and digital transition – future will be different – but how?
• Lot’s of legacy – integration between is hard (technology wise)
• Data spread over the place• Sub optimalisation• …..but it works...
• Responsible people – within their domain – reliable – but silo knowledge – experience – not making full solutions
• Constantly more time in operations - not meeting speed/quality needed by the business –downward spiral
#IoTenergy
Elevator exercise – what do we want• Traditional planned maintenance scheme – on
regular (yearly) basis• Full of sensors, > 100s of variables• First optimalisation – easy to predict• Of 100s of variables – only one is prevalent in
preventive maintenance – opening time of doors• Slight delay in ms is strong indicator for future
failure/repair/maintenance• How can we find these variables in our business?

Hard to innovate - a lot of interdependencies - lot of people from specialist perspective – no breakthrough or agility
Hard to integrate – requires focus and broad knowledge of the process/ICT landscape –risk of being dilution

Disappointment, due to complexity of integration in the ICT landscape, multidisciplinair
Lot’s of work and cost no major gain – lot’s of momentum and lead times
Future is unknown…..skills not....• More is needed of....to get out of the legacy situation
• Data management• Integration• Business Process Management• Security/Identity & Access Management• IoT – sensors – smart devices• Rapid Product Development• UX/Mobility
• T- shaped profile – specialist plus knowledge of the above...• Vision for ICT employees to move from a single specialisation towards a more broad profile – T
shape consisting of those skills
• Enabling (a start of) multidisciplinary teams

Starting training programme for the T shape
• 1 star - 1 day course – able to communicate about the concept – find resources within the organization
• 2 star - 3 day course – adding skills to existing role
• 3 star – changing career direction• 15 persons per group – 1250 inscriptions – 3 till 4 interests per ICT employee• Mostly own trainers
• Theory – applied theory – lunch – example – building stuff• Approx. 9 months• Open to the business – 25% participation

Current status
• Struggling into the future• Lot’s of discussion with the business
• Having the right problems and challenges• Reduction of complexity of the legacy• Challenging technology problems – instead of timing and administration
• Hard to communicate
• Bonding• Interest in areas to explore and work – breaking down silos
