2015 Local Course Guide Date of issue: 20/04/2015 This qualification reflects the role of early childhood educators who are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum in early childhood education and care services. In doing so they work to implement an approved learning framework within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff. Further Study Pathways After achieving this Diploma qualification, students may continue their studies in an early childhood degree at higher education. Credits and articulation pathways may apply. Employment Opportunities This course may provide employment opportunities as a Level 3 or 4 Child Care Worker in long day care, occasional care, family day care, pre-schools and kindergartens. Job roles include: Authorised supervisor (children’s services) Children’s services coordinator Centre manager (children’s services) Childhood educator Group/team coordinator/leader (children’s services) Children’s adviser Program leader (children’s services) Early childhood educator Mode of Study Classroom theory Practical ‘hands-on’ experience Field trips Self-directed learning Industry work placement of 240 hours Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) A student may be entitled to gain unit of competency credits or recognition, if what they have learned at work, from other programs, courses, from life experience or training provided at work is relevant to the course. SCEI recognises the AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other registered training organisations. For further information see the RPL brochure or visit www.scei.edu.au Entry requirements To ensure an appropriate learning opportunity, individuals would need to demonstrate a capacity to undertake study at Diploma level, this can be demonstrated via the following: Aged 18 or over Completion of Year 11 or demonstration of relevant industry experience or mature age entry. Successful completion of Southern Cross Education Institute’s Language Literacy and Numeracy indicator CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care Mature aged who have diverse academic, work and life experiences are encouraged to enrol. The definition of a mature aged student for SCEI’s purposes is a person over 21 years of age that hasn’t been studying at either year 12 level or university/TAFE level for at least 7 years and are an Australian or New Zealand citizen (or Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent Humanitarian Visa). Additional Requirements Students must undertake National Police Check and Working with Children Check before commencing work placement.
