ABOUT WORK PLACEMENT

This course has two blocks of compulsory work placement ( 120 hours each) . Detai ls about the goals and expectations of your work placement wil l be g iven to you beforehand.

Work placements wil l a lways be organised by TAFE Digi ta l . Under no ci rcumstances are you to organise your own placement . I f you are a lready working in, or have some involvement with a service, or i f you have ideas about placement opportunities then you are very welcome to discuss this with your course faci l itator, but you must NOT approach the workplace yourself .

Pract ice in the field is a vi ta l and integral part of the course as i t enables you to relate the knowledge, ski l ls and values learned to the ‘ real world’ . Some work placement must be undertaken with chi ldren under the age of 18 months.

Due to increasing demands on educat ion and care services, work placements are often d i ff icult to arrange. Therefore, you are asked to be f lexib le in your requirements to maximise your learning experiences wherever you are placed. You are advised to embark on your placeme nt with an open atti tude, to avoid disappointments and gain the many benefits .

The work placement component needs to be looked upon, both as a learning experience for you, and a useful and helpful experience for the supervisor and their workplace .

Work placement policy and procedures There are a number of compulsory procedures that you need to fol low. This is because your behaviour and interactions whi le on work placement can impact on many people including vulnerable chi ldren.

Due to the private and sensit ive nature of working in an early chi ldhood sett ing, there are a number of essential forms that must be completed. These are available on the course home page and must be completed and submitted prior to going on work placement .

These pol ic ies and procedures are important to protect yourself and others by keeping everyone safe and by acting in an ethical manner.

You wil l need to read through al l the work placement sect ions on the onl ine course home page, and fol low the l inks to conf irm your understanding and acceptance (onl ine) of the fol lowing:

1 . Student Code of Conduct and i ts requirements

2. Declarat ion of Intent ion in Regards to Adhering to the Pr ivacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.

3. Working with Children Check

4. Once al l of these are complete, you wil l then have access to the Work placement Record Book.

BEFORE WORK PLACEMENT

DURING WORK PLACEMENT

Before you can attend work placement you need to:

- Successful ly complete a l l off-the-job online assessment events for a l l units in the re levant stage. Work placement 1 occurs at the end of Stage 1 (group 1 and 2 units) and Work placement 2 occurs at the end of Stage 2 (group 3 and 4 units) .

- Acknowledge understanding and acceptance of a ll work placement policies and procedures and upload all required documentat ion and forms (online in the work placement section of the course home page) .

- Attend a preparation for work placement session. When you have completed al l of the previous essential items, your course faci l i tator wi l l arrange a time to ring you. You wi l l need to be s itting in front of a computer for this session.

If you have any concerns or worries while on work placement you should contact your course faci l i tator as soon as possible so that they can provide support and guidance. You wi ll be assessed by a TAFE assessor during your work placement, you wil l be advised of vis it detai ls

What if I am going to be late or will be unable to attend work placement? You wil l need to telephone your educat ion and care service supervisor at the workplace and make suitable arrangements to complete the missed time. The workplace supervisor has been advised to inform TAFE Digital if you fail to attend without providing not if icat ion.

What if I find the job is too hard and I don’t feel confident in what I need to do? Talk to your workplace supervisor and let them know what you are feeling. Everyone finds learning new things ini t ial ly di fficult, but with t ime and practice, our ski l lset and confidence increases. In an educat ion and care service workplace, you wi ll general ly be part of a team. If appropriate, ta lk to your team mates about these concerns. They may have had s imilar concerns when they began in the workplace.

For any ongoing or sensit ive concerns, always feel free to contact your TAFE Digi ta l faci l i tator.

WORK PLACEMENT LEARNING

What if I am injured? I f you are injured while undertaking work placement, please noti fy your workplace supervisor and TAFE Digital faci l itator as soon as possible . Your supervisor wi l l advise i f you need to complete specific service documentation, such as an accident/ incident form.

One of the main outcomes of your work placement is the opportunity to ‘ learn on the job’ . This can be a very rewarding experience for both you and the staff at the service that you attend.

You wil l have the opportunity to consol idate and extend your off-the-job learning. You wil l have many opportunit ies to pract ise and develop your skil ls. As you part icipate in these experiences you need to reflect on your level of skil l , areas that you can further develop and what you have learned.

Some strategies that other students have found useful are l isted below:

- Take every opportunity to part ic ipate as a member of staff

- Watch careful ly what the staff members do and how the routines of the service work so that you can demonstrate init iative by helping out without being asked

- I f you are unsure about how to complete a task ask your workplace supervisor

- Let your workplace supervisor know that you are keen to get feedback to improve your ski l ls

- When feedback is given, including constructive criticism, take responsibi l i ty and act upon i t, thank the person for taking the time to provide you wi th the feedback

- Look for opportunit ies to practice what you have learned so far and reflect on your own ski l ls and ways to improve

- Work at building re lat ionships with the staff, chi ldren and fami lies at the service

- A positive atti tude, good organisation and ini tiat ing conversat ions with others at appropriate times wi l l provide a good impression
