Dimensions is printed on recycled paper containing 10% post consumer waste and uses eco-friendly soy based inks.

As you see from our cover story, in this month’s issue we are highlighting our Radio and News staff. These dedicated folks have been working hard to keep things running smoothly during the pandemic. While many of our employees are working from home, members of these teams have continued to work at the station making sure we are able to bring you the latest news, information, music and arts programs that you enjoy. I hope you will take a moment to read about them and get to know them a little better.

Many of you tuned in for our educational program VA TV Classroom that presented teachers teaching content for students in grades K–10. We’ve decided to re-air this series on WHRO TV 15 throughout the summer. Tune in for a refresher or to catch up on any lessons you missed. Much of this content is also archived in our digital learning library, eMediaVA. Visit emediava.org to search for the topics and grade levels that interest you most. We will also have a new season of VA TV Classroom coming in the fall—stay tuned!

In addition to this content for your children, we have some exciting summer programs lined up that the whole family will enjoy. This year marks 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment, and we’ll be sharing the stories of some of the women who worked so hard to bring it about. The upcoming film The Vote (July 6–7, 9 p.m.), from American Experience, tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote. Unladylike2020 (July 10, 9 p.m.), from American Masters, explores the stories of pioneering women in American politics. And, of course, we will celebrate America’s 244th birthday with A Capitol Fourth 2020 on July 4 at 8 p.m.

As our community gets back to (a new) “normal” and more things open up, I’d like to thank you for your generous support during these unprecedented times. We’ve heard from so many of you during this time about how you rely on WHRO Public Media for news, entertainment and information—and it is only through your contributions that any of it is possible. Many of you donated in support of our TV and radio pledge drives last month. Thank you! If you didn’t get a chance to give, or you’d like to send an additional gift, donating online is a quick and easy way. Visit us at whro.org/donate

Lastly, I’m excited to announce that work on our Wall of Faces initiative reached a new milestone—we’ve located the last missing photo! This project’s goal was to find photos for all 1,306 Virginia Veterans listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. You can read more about it at whro.org/walloffaces Thank you to everyone who helped us locate photos!

Stay safe, stay cool and have a great summer!

President & Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to Act II

‘A Way with Words’ Returns to WHRV, Saturday Mornings at 10!

WHRO 90.3 FMJuly 2020

Like the next act in a great dramatic opera, we head into the second half of what has been probably the most memorable year for many people including our WHRO Public Media supporters (and staff!). Violins and clarinets were exchanged for masks and gloves, concert halls went dark, no bagpipers showed up at Tattoo time, and culture in Eastern Virginia suffered a severe shock.

Fortunately, WHRO FM continued to shine as a beacon of fine arts and community outreach during the bad times, and continues to do so. As Wayla Chambo mentioned in the May issue of Dimensions, we kept the Virginia Arts Festival and Virginia Symphony front and center through broadcasts. (Wayla even contributed with an online flute recital!) Our mighty classical music library is

Recently, we made some changes to the Thursday lineup on WHRV to ‘bring back’ one of the highest requested programs in recent history, Selected Shorts. With that change, another listener’s favorite, A Way with Words, was put on temporary hiatus while we figured things out in our programming calendar. Finally, we’re ready to share some good news!

I thank the countless fans of the show for reaching out and expressing your desire to have A Way with Words return to our weekly schedule. Thanks to your strong support (and patience), I’m thrilled to announce beginning July 4, steadfast fans of A Way with Words will once again be able to hear the show on 89.5 WHRV!

immune to viruses and diseases, and so we will continue to offer plenty of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms to counteract the pandemic and bring hope and happy moments to our many listeners.

We have a Beethoven symphony cycle going on Saturday nights with This Just In and continue to find Virginia-inspired music on Wednesday nights with A Local Touch – we’re sampling Nathaniel Dett’s piano music, for example. Stay safe and stay tuned to WHRO FM as we weather act two of this dramatic year.

Tune in Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. to hear radio’s most entertaining show about language examined through family, history and culture!

With this move, Left Right and Center (typically heard Saturdays at 10 a.m.) will move to 7 a.m. You Bet Your Garden with Mike McGrath will move online: wlvt.org/television/you-bet-your-garden/

WHRO Public Media whro.org

Work Like A Girl is WHRO Public Media’s new American Graduate initiative to create awareness of the great opportunities for young women in skilled careers. These are careers that, when you think of them, you usually think of a man in the job, such as electricians, welders and truckers. However, they are rewarding, well-paying jobs for women, and we need to let them know about them for many reasons.

One is, for young women with a high school diploma and without training or secondary education, the main jobs available to them are mostly low-paying jobs such as retail, childcare and hospitality. These types of hourly jobs do not provide a sustainable wage for a family, or a long-term career. And how much you work can be heavily influenced by the seasons or the region’s economic situation. Some more reasons are:

• There is little, or zero, income inequality in skilled careers as pay is based on experience, not on gender.

• Earn while you learn. Skilled careers can offer pathways to learn job skills and get paid to learn, such as apprenticeships.

• Training for many of these careers can result in much less debt, or zero debt, compared to a four-year degree. In the U.S alone, borrowers owe $1.5 trillion in student loan debt.

• Some programs take as little as two years, some even less.

• And, women are in high demand for these jobs!!!

WHRO recently asked a group of young women what Work Like A Girl meant to them, and they had a lot to say.

• Time to take charge• Lead• Work hard• Step up• Showing a man what a girl can do• Confidence• Go for it• Working smart• Women are strong• Can do the same job as men

We then asked the group why young women aren’t encouraged to go into welding, logistics, HVAC, electrical and other skilled careers. One answer is: parents. Parents often do not consider these jobs because of the stigma attached to them, they don’t think of them, or they just don’t know any info about them.

Well parents, meet Grace, Kelli and Amanda.

• Grace has an English degree from a four-year college, but now loves her job as an HVAC tech and plans on staying in the field for years.

• Kelli enjoys her career in welding. It not only helps support her family, but gives her time to do things she loves, like take the stage as a beauty pageant contestant and write a children’s book.

• Amanda is a big rig trucker. Trucking not only gives her time, and money, to spend with her family, it lets her follow her passion of salsa dancing.

Jae SinnettHost, Sinnett in Session/ The R&B Chronicles

Music has always offered us an area of artistic reprieve. It can help us find comfort and balance. The COVID situation

consumes the news and oftentimes it’s overload and dark. Music gives us this needed positive outlet that transports us to special places. As host and producer of Sinnett in Session and The R&B Chronicles my job is to present the best variety of jazz and classic soul music, along with sharing the artists’ stories. Take that breather. Kick back and relax.

Raymond JonesClassical Announcer/Producer

Raymond Jones here. I work out of our Williamsburg studio where I produce many programs. I’m heard every night on WHRO FM with the classics, as well as on Sunday

afternoon. I acquire and listen to lots of new classical releases and feature them on Saturday evening with This Just In, and I scout out music with a Virginia connection and showcase that on Wednesday evenings with A Local Touch. I also produce the broadcasts of the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera, Virginia Chorale and Virginia Arts Festival.

Jonah GrinkewitzAssistant Producer of Public Affairs and Digital Content

Although I’m working more from home these days, my job as a producer for HearSay with Cathy Lewis remains the

same: Deliver the most important and helpful information to our listeners. Our team is striving to tackle each angle of this unprecedented situation. I’m also the producer and host of the WHRO podcast Lyrical. Lyrical is a platform for songwriters to share the story behind their most meaningful work, combining candid conversation with intimate musical performances. Visit whro.org/lyrical to listen to new episodes!

Paul ShugrueHost, Out of the Box/A Shot of The Blues

There’s a Dilbert cartoon on my office door where, after another disappointment at work, he says, “I wish I could get a job playing my favorite music.” Well that’s

what I do! Out of the Box is a show where I play the newest rock, Americana and blues releases weeknights on 89.5 WHRV FM. Listeners find out about new music by actually hearing it on the radio. What a concept! I like to think of it as a public service, especially during these difficult times, but in reality it’s just a heck of a lot of fun.

Jeff SandnerRadio Operations Manager/ Host, Lost in The Shuffle

I’m Jeff Sandner, radio operations manager for WHRO Public Media. I check and monitor the radio programs you hear on

WHRV and WHRO FM. I also host Lost in The Shuffle every Friday night at 10:00 on WHRV, and on-demand on WHRO’s media player. This gives me a chance to ‘escape’ and go back in time and find lost radio songs and memories from the ’70s through the ’90s. I hope you get a chance to escape and relive the memories from yesteryear on my show. And thank you so much for your support of our great team at WHRV and WHRO Public Media!

Paul BibeauProducer

This is me. Hiding upstairs. I have a wife, three boys, a mother-in-law and a Great Dane puppy in the house with me. The noise is exactly what you think it is. I’m

determined to help produce solid programs and report the news that matters to our community. And I’m looking forward to the day when I can come back.

Rebecca WeinsteinClassical Announcer/Producer

During the pandemic, I’ve continued to host Mid-day Classics live from the station. I’ve also been interviewing local artists and performers through Zoom and Skype

calls that have aired on WHRO and WHRV. It’s been amazing to see our local arts community innovate and continue to create against all odds. On a personal note, sharing music with our listeners every day has kept me grounded and hopeful; it’s a job I feel lucky to do every day.

Roger WilliamsAnnouncer/Board Operator/ Fill-in Host—Morning Edition

Prior to moving to Hampton Roads in 2005, I spent 40 years on microphone and camera for the American Forces Network,

Europe. A volunteer opportunity to pitch at WHRO Public Media during a pledge drive turned into a part-time job in 2016.When Morning Edition host Gina Gambony takes off, I get to wake you up in the morning. I also produce some sponsorship messages as I continue to enjoy radio, my lifelong love.

Cathy LewisHost, HearSay with Cathy Lewis

I’m broadcasting HearSay from home these days and it’s quickly become the new normal. Thanks to Todd Washburn, our engineer, I have a setup that sounds

as good as it would in the studio. Producer Jonah Grinkewitz is in the studio and Paul Bibeau works from his home in Virginia Beach. We continue to do the work we’ve done for nearly 24 years and have recently received feedback from listeners who’ve been able to connect with benefits and other services as a result of our broadcasts, so that’s gratifying.

Barry GrahamFolk Music Producer & Mid-Day Host

WHRV is a second career for me after retiring from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools with 32 years of teaching social studies classes. Now, instead of

helping kids learn the basics of government, I broadcast a myriad of public affairs and news programs which also helps to instill civic literacy and understanding of current issues. I also continue as the folk music producer for the station crafting the Sunday night programming, where I host two shows Pickin on WHRV and the Acoustic Highway.

Dwight DavisClassical Announcer/Producer

When I walked in off the street 37 years ago, with no experience, and declared that I’d like to be a classical radio announcer, it was amazing that I was hired. Amazing too

is the fact that the pleasure in the job has not worn off after all this time. But then, where’s the downside of spending mornings with Dvorak, Mozart et al.? Add to that the knowledge that I’m helping make listeners’ days a bit better by sharing the music through the magic of radio.

Wayla ChamboAssistant Program Director, WHRO FM

I coordinate programming and operations for our classical station, and host Afternoon Classics. Through all the challenges of the past few months, with

many changes to our daily routines to keep our staff protected, we’ve been glad to keep bringing you classical music 24/7, including special programming from our local ensembles. I miss live concerts very much, and look forward to those resuming when it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, I’m so grateful to continue sharing this music with you over the radio.

Sam TurkenReporter

The coronavirus pandemic has transformed the newsroom’s operations. We must now speak to sources by phone even though radio reporting traditionally requires in-

person interviews. Regarding our coverage—the beginning of the pandemic necessitated quick-paced, breaking news reporting of the fast-growing outbreak. That still continues, but we’ve recently been focusing on other impacts of the virus. What does lost tax revenue mean for city budgets and sea level rise planning? How is the outbreak worsening housing insecurity? Such questions will continue to guide our reporting throughout the pandemic and its aftermath.

Barbara Hamm LeeExecutive Producer/ Host, Another ViewAs the saying goes, “the show must go on,” so the coronavirus pandemic has not stopped the Another View crew from bringing you the latest on the pandemic

and its effect on the African American community. With social distancing, no guests are allowed in the studio, so I’ve become more adept at “listening” to body language through voice instead of seeing it. It truly makes for a more intimate conversation. Hope you’ll join us every Thursday at noon!

Rebecca Feldhaus AdamsNews Director

When your job is to cover the local community, it’s difficult not to be out in it. We’ve been reporting responsibly

and mostly remotely these days, but it hasn’t stopped us from digging in to the most important things you need to know right now. It seems the work is unending, but knowing our neighbors will benefit from it keeps me going.

Though I miss working near my human colleagues, I’m never lonely. Cooper (top left) and Lunchbox (bottom right) are never far away. But I suspect that’s in large part because they know I’m the one who gives out the treats.

Tristan Morris-MannClassical Announcer/ Production Assistant

I’m supporting team Classical in any way I can. I used to be in the booth for the live opera broadcasts from the stage of the Met

Opera. There were a few performances I was still looking forward to when the Met had to announce they were cancelling their season. But we are still bringing you great opera every Saturday, and I’ll be there afterwards with music to ease you into the evening.

Gina GambonyHost, Morning Edition

While I still come into the station to host Morning Edition, I do much of my recording at home these days. I have a very high-tech setup going on here—I

bring my equipment under a fluffy comforter. Sometimes my cats attack, but otherwise, it’s working pretty well.

Mechelle HankersonReporter

I’m a reporter for WHRO’s new journalism team, which means I report on events

and issues that are important to Hampton Roads. A lot of our focus lately has been on making sure people have reliable, accurate information so they can make smart decisions in an unprecedented time.

I’m used to being out in the community and talking to people in person, but that’s hard to do right now. Instead, I spend a lot more time in my closet, which is a makeshift studio now. There, I can record phone interviews for stories. It’s not ideal to have to limit face-to-face interactions as a reporter, but it does force us to get creative.

Anthony McSpaddenClassical Announcer/Producer

One of the great things about broadcasting is just how far we’ve come in our abilities to create content

in almost any environment. Thanks to technology, I’m able to bring you Mid-day Classics on weekdays from 10–1, Car Tunes Saturdays from 7–Noon, and Musical Brunch, Sundays from 7–Noon from right here in my home studio, sometimes with my dog George present (although he knows how to keep quiet!). I enjoy every minute I get to spend on-air with WHRO’s great listeners and supporters! Now, if I could just figure out the neighbors’ lawn-mowing schedule.....
