JEWISH FILM SHOWCASE The Jewish Film Showcase offers an exciting slate of new feature documentary films telling vibrant stories from around the world. Curated and presented as a mini film festival, by The National Center for Jewish Film, the showcase presents three award-winning films, each exploring a dynamic story rich in history, art, and culture. Paraphrasing one of this year's protagonists, "these films reach deep into history and bring something back." The three films are: "Raise the Roof" - Artists Rick
and Laura Brown, inspired by the magnificent, mural-covered wooden synagogues of 18th century Poland--the last of which were destroyed by the Nazis--lead a team in building a show-stopping replica now installed as the centerpiece of the Museum of Polish Jews in Warsaw. "Carvalho's Journey" - A real-life 19th-century American western adventure about Charleston born Sephardic daguerreotypist Solomon Nunes Carvalho who became one of the first to photograph the Far West while traveling with mountain men, Native Americans, and Mormons as part of explorer John Fremont's 1853 Westward Expedition. "Ahead of Time" - For seven decades trailblazing foreign correspondent and photojournalist Ruth Gruber didn’t just report the news, she made it, reporting from the Soviet Arctic, escorting Holocaust refugees on a secret war-time mission, and changing the world with her dispatches from the Palestine-bound ship Exodus in 1947

THIS IS THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of President John F. Kenne-dy's birth, the documentary This Is The House That Jack Built chron-icles his early years and examines his lasting legacy. The hour-long film touches on familiar themes of JFK's life, and his ascent to the presidency, his mistakes and triumphs. It also explores new and lit-tle-known stories, some that surfaced after the publication of Larry Sabato's novel The Kennedy Half-Century: The Presidency, Assassi-nation, and Lasting Legacy of John F. Kennedy. Revelations include: a new CIA staffer and her discovery of a file on Oswald that soon thereafter went missing, and the Warren Commission's pressure on 19-year- old Buell Wesley Frazier, who drove Oswald to work on No-vember 22, 1963. Presidential historian Robert Dallek lends his voice to the documentary, as do authors John T. Shaw and David Pitts, former Kennedy staffers Nancy Dutton and Sue Voelsinger, civil rights expert Tomiko Brown-Nagan, and Buell Wesley Frazier, among others. The one-hour film also explores why JFK is still relevant today, why we continue care about him, and why a new generation of young Americans find him utterly compelling. Airs Tuesday, December 5th at 9PM
Nature/Science/Adventure
NATIONAL PARKS - TROUBLED EDENSThe one-hour documentary National Parks - Troubled Edens examines the future of America's national parks from Grand Canyon to Yellowstone, and looks at issues ranging from over-crowding and wildlife management to the long-standing rub between conservation and development. Since the early 20th century, lands designated as national parks, forests, monuments, and historic sites have all encountered controversy. Political machinations abound; two thirds of the current national parks were opposed when they were announced. Environmental issues such as global warming, reintroducing wolves where they had been exterminated, and invasive species affect the parks in ways never imagined. Finally, in an ironic twist on the very reason the parks were originally created, visitors are putting stresses on our national resources like never before. Weaving black and white photos and stunning imagery of the national parks with interviews from several experts - including: Jonathan Jarvis, former director of the National Parks Service and Andrea Brunelle, chair, department of geography at the University of Utah - the documentary examines the unique challenges that America's national parks face in the 21st century. Airs Thursday, December 7th at 7PM
NOVA EXTREME ANIMAL WEAPONS Explore the secrets that underlie nature's battleground. Every animal has some kind of weapon, whether claws or horns, fangs or stings. But why are some armaments
huge and extreme, far beyond any practical need?
Airs Sunday, December 3rd at 6PM and Tuesday, December 5th at 7PM
