DIABETES:Calculating an Insulin Dose

2 Types: TYPE 2“Adult Onset” or “Non-Insulin Dependent”

3 main things go wrong…

1: Insulin Resistance

Skinny Insulin…Plus coffee =

Happy Insulin!

2: Insulin Deficiency

Asleep pancreas + “wake up”-= Pancreas insulin factory

Most Common-Diet and Exercise can treat this

3: Receptor Site Failure

Closed lock + receptor site med = open lock

TYPE 1 DIABETES“Insulin Dependent” or “Juvenile Diabetes”

HYPERGLYCEMIA

HYPOGLYCEMIA “INSULIN REACTION”

InsulinRight Amount, Right Time, Right Concentration

Jason was 975 mg/dl

Normal= 70-120 mg/dl

 975/120=8

times normal, or 800% of

normal

No anorexia… that’s ½ tsp in the blood steam constantly… not 1.2 tsp

a day!

HbA1c of 29.559

“normal” is considered to be 4.5 to 5.5

To convert HbA1c to the average glucose value this represents:

Glucose Value = (HbA1c x 35.6) – 77.3

Jason 29.559 (29.559 x 35.5) – 77.3 = 975

Fat red blood cell

IV’s (I poke)1,000 liters x 6 =6000 liters

 “Finger stick” blood tests

6/hr x 18 hours = 108

Vein draws18 hrs / every 3 hrs = 6

 That’s 169 owies!

U100 Insulin means 100 units insulin per ml suspension x 10 ml

vial = 1000 Units per vial.

1000 unites divided into 100 cc potassium IV drip =10 units of

insulin per cc to infuse.

Divided by the needed dose of .5 units/hr = .05 cc/hr

The pump delivers .01cc fluid/drip, we need 5 drips an hour(60 min)

=1 drip every 20 min

½ daily dose = ½ (12) = 6 units/day with NpH insulin, giving the shots twice a day, 12-hours apart,

each shot = 3 units to give a basil rate of insulin.

6 units needed daily for food.1+2+2+1 = 6

Carb Counting

16 grams per 1 unit insulin

4-10 shots a day for 26 yearsThis averages 6 shots a dayFor 365 days a year x 26=

56,940 shots

$3500 + $300 + $180 +$270 + $500 = $4930

$5,000 on a simple interest of 5% ($250) = $5,250 over 12 months

=$437.50/month

1 site every 3 days instead of 6-8 shots a day!

“YOU DRIP!”

Cheetos15g = 1 exchange x 3 units
