Vol. I, January 2019 Key Recent Industry Trends
The agrochemicals industry is going through an
impending challenge. With food supplies demand
rising at a significant rate due to continuous
increase in global population and the imposing
regulations on many conventional pesticides, the
farmers are consequently facing pressure to
improve quality and crop yield. As pesticide
formulators/ manufacturers pursue innovative
solutions to deliver optimal efficiency, safety and
legislative compliance, the biologicals
(biopesticides and biostimulants) are creating a
promising opportunities in this challenging market
that is continually evolving.
ACTIVE OPPORTUNITIES IN CROP PROTECTION CONTROL
The R&D-focused companies and off-patent
product manufacturers, as well as many smaller
enterprises and start-ups, have shown a significant
inclination towards biologicals in recent years. For
last 20 years, the rate of new biological product
introduction has frequently exceeded than that of
conventional products and this trend is expected
to continue in the future. In terms of patent
activities, 2017 was the first year that witnessed
more patents for biological pesticides than
conventional crop protection products, i.e., 173
compared with 117.

Document Highlights:
Terramera, based in Vancouver, Canada, is one of
the leader in technology for Clean Food, has
commercially launched its novel, broad-spectrum
agricultural insect, fungal disease, and mite
control product “RANGO”, after being approved
by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The company claims that the product contains
highly effective, plant-based active ingredients
built into a proprietary formulation with superior
mixing and handling qualities. It protects
vegetables, fruits, berries/ grapes, tree crops, row
crops, ornamental plants and greenhouse/
horticultural crops against a broad range of plant
pests and diseases.
FMC Corporation has launched Ethos 3D
insecticide/ fungicide, formulated specifically for
the novel 3RIVE 3D in-furrow application system.
The company claims that Ethos 3D insecticide/
fungicide provides full spectrum seedling insect
and disease protection for corn, soybeans, dry
beans and peas. It also claims that the product
combines bifenthrin insecticide with a
biofungicide that grows along with the root
system to protect against damping off diseases
including Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium and
Rhizoctonia.
AgBiTech launched bioinsecticide Surtivo Soja
against Helicoverpa armigera in Brazil for the
control of caterpillars including Chrysodeixis
includens.
The company claims that Surtivo Soja is the first
pre-mixture of baculovirus and is meant for the
biological control of caterpillars. Further,
according to the company’s general-director of
Latin America, Adriano Vilas Boas, the new
product will be provided for use by mid of 2019,
along with three bio-insecticides of the
company registered in the country.
Bayers’s Serenade ASO
fungicide/ bactericide
is now registered in
France for foliar and soil
applications for use in
the variety of crops,
including fruits and
vegetables.
STK Bio-ag Technologies, based in
Israel, has developed STK REGEV®,
which is a hybrid pest control
fungicide and is now registered in
Argentina for peanuts, with future
label extensions on potatoes, wine
grapes, tomatoes, peppers,
blueberries and tobacco.
PepsiCo is seeking a deal with Arysta
LifeScience Chile on Biological
Products. Under the agreement, the
selected group of Chilean potato
farmers that supplies PepsiCo will use
the solutions from the Arysta
LifeScience Pronutiva program which
combines traditional crop protection
inputs with biological solutions.
Valagro, a leading company in the
production and marketing of
biostimulants and specialty nutrients,
announced the construction of a new
plant located in USA. The facility is
expected to come online in the third
quarter of 2019. Construction is
expected to begin in the fourth quarter.
of 2018.

Pivot Bio & Bayer announced their collaboration to
develop Bradyrhizobium strains with enhanced nitrogen
production for U.S. soybean growers. This collaboration
will bring together Pivot Bio’s microbial expertise with
Bayer’s experience in developing and commercializing
chemical and biological crop protection products for
soybean farmers worldwide.
ADAMA, one of the leading global crop protection
company, collaborated with AgroSpheres, an
agricultural biotechnology company. The collaboration
is focused on developing novel crop protection
solutions. Both the companies will conduct R&D on
AgroSpheres’ proprietary Bioparticle technology for
encapsulation of pesticides.

Massive investments in Developing New Eco-friendly Herbicides & Bio-based
Seed Treatment Methods
BASF marks its entry into seeds, nonselective herbicides, and nematicide seed treatments
after closing the acquisition with Bayer, and has renamed the division from Crop
Protection to Agricultural solutions. This acquisition helps BASF strengthens its seed
platform and in expanding its Agricultural Solutions portfolio, which includes seeds and traits,
chemical and biological crop protection, soil management, plant health, pest control and
digital farming platform xarvio.
BASF registers two new herbicides, namely, “Luximo” and “Tirexor”. According to the
company, Luximo has an active ingredient that provides pre-emergence, residual control
against a broad range of grasses, and, Tirexor is a new protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)
inhibitor herbicide that controls PPO-resistant weeds.
BASF launches Vault® IP Plus seed treatment and Obvius® Plus fungicide seed
treatment, recently registered by the EPA. As per company, both products will be
commercially available in September 2019. Vault IP is the only combined inoculant
containing two active biologicals for improved fungicidal activity and protection. Obvius
Plus seed treatment delivers four-way disease protection that helps growers get their
soybean crop successfully established earlier in the season.
BASF launches Muneo® BioKit, the first solution that combines chemical and biological
products in a new technology for the cultivation of sugarcane. The chemical part is
composed of Muneo, a product with insecticidal action and fungicide, while the biological
product is Aprinza, an inoculant that acts as a promoter of root growth and aerial parts,
along with contributing with a greater absorption of nutrients.
BASF proves to be among the most active player in developing
new solutions for herbicides and bio-based Solutions for seeds
and crops
