Grading: There will be three tests covering all the new material and all previously covered material, i.e. tests are cumulative. The final exam is also cumulative. Tentative test dates are below; however, exact test dates will be announced at least one week in advance.

Test Day/Date Chapters 1 Tuesday 2/2 8,19,10 2 Thursday 3/3 2,3,4 3 Tuesday 4/5 5,6 Final Exam Thursday 4/28, 8-11 am 2-9, 19

Each test will count 15% and the final exam 25% of the course grade. No late or make-up test will be given. In the event of an excused, documented absence from a test, the final exam will replace the grade of zero that you receive for that missed test. Online homework will count 12 %. We will use Sapling. You can purchase online ($40; instructions here http://www2.saplinglearning.com/help/higher-education-us/accounts-and-registration ). The website can be accessed here http://www.saplinglearning.com/ibiscms/course/view.php?id=50424 . The name of the online homework is College of Charleston – CHEM 351 – Spring16 – Forconi. Tutorials given in class will count 8 % of your course grade. Exact topics will be discussed as the course proceeds. Please download two software –they are both free (in case you cannot download them, you will be able to use them in the computer labs in the SSM building).

1) Pymol –follow instructions at http://pymol.org/edu/?q=educational/ to download it for free. 2) Hyper32 (only for windows) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.easterby/hyper32.html .

You will need these two software for the tutorials. Quizzes will count 10% (7 % for participation, 3 % for correctness) of your course grade. Please register to the Chem351_Sp16 polls at PollEverywhere (www.polleverywhere.com/register?p=2a2b-114p&pg=eCu76mC&u=tKnuRSLw). It is crucial that you use your g.cofc account when you register, and that you log into that account before taking a poll.

Grade % A 93-100 A- 90-92 B+ 87-89 B 83-86 B- 80-82 C+ 77-79 C 73-76 C- 70-72 D+ 67-69 D 63-66 D- 60-62 F 0-59

• Compare and contrast structure and function of biological molecules • Recognize and evaluate principles of biological catalysis • Appraise kinetic and thermodynamic data • Employ chemical and thermodynamic principles to explain biological interactions

Academic Dishonesty: Cheating will not be tolerated in this course. The following description of cheating is from the student handbook: “the actual giving or receiving of unauthorized, dishonest assistance that might give one student an unfair advantage over another in the performance of any assigned, graded academic work, inside or outside of the classroom, and by any means whatsoever, including but not limited to fraud, duress, deception, theft, talking, making signs, gestures, copying, electronic messaging, photography, unauthorized reuse of previously graded work, and unauthorized use or possession of study aids, memoranda, books, data, or other information. The term cheating includes engaging in any behavior specifically prohibited by a faculty member in the course syllabus or class discussion.” For this course, entering formulas into a calculator to be used during an exam will be considered as an act of premeditated cheating. Students that cheat and are then prosecuted through the Honor Board receive a grade of XF. This does not look good to all future employers and graduate programs. It is infinitely better to get an F than an XF.

Disabilities: If there is a student in this class who has a documented disability and has been approved to receive accommodations through SNAP Services, please feel free to come and discuss this with me.
