Mr Jasu ShahFounder & Chairman, CHEMTECH Foundation

“CHEMTECH Foundation has always been

fortunate to receive support from wonderful

leaders from India and abroad. We are very

thankful to DECHEMA and VDMA of Germany

which have supported the foundation

throughout its journey on strengthening the

business relations between Germany and India.

Further, the response from stalwarts of Indian

chemical industry has also been overwhelming.”

Mr Suresh PrabhuFormer Union Minister, Govt. of India & Global Brand Ambassador ChemTECH World Expo 2013

“Chemtech is a significant event for Indian

process industry. Chemtech Foundation is one

of the few organisations that have been able to

organise such a big event consistently for years.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of Mr Shah

who succeeded in bringing leaders from India

and abroad under one roof to ensure growth of

chemical industry in the country.”

Mr Richard ClemensManaging Director, VDMA, Germany

“Management of large EPC projects is complex

and the complexities have grown over the

years. Over the last years, the numbers of

EPC projects has increased substantially,

particularly in the new mega projects in the

gulf regions that have added the complexities

of the task of major EPC companies.”

Smt Deepa DasmunshiHonourable Minister of State for Urban Development, Government of India.

“Water is undoubtedly a crucial component for

both industrial and human development. This is

the reason, since independence, the Government

of India has put lot of emphasis on to strengthen

the availability of water for all. However, as the

fact remains, a large portion of rural India is still

deprived of pure drinking water.”

Mr B NarayanGroup President (Procurement & Projects), RIL; & Chairman, EPC World Expo 2013

“There will be tremendous scope for Engineering,

Procurement and Construction (EPC) sector

in India, enabling the sustainable growth

of process industry. Indian EPC sector has

tremendous capabilities, but there is lot of

scope for improvement, particularly in terms of

timely project execution and optimisation of

communication software and processes.”

Mr A K PurwahaChairman & Managing Director, Engineers India Ltd (EIL)

“At the crossroads, where the nation stands

today, nothing is more important than building

a robust infrastructure. The 12th Five-Year Plan

envisages ivestments to the tune of USD 1 trillion

across roads, railways, airports, shipping, energy

& hydrocarbon sectors which will propel the

growth of the country in coming years.”

Mr Sudhir VasudevaChairman & Managing Director, ONGC Limited

“By 2020, India will witness a burgeoning gap in

demand and supply of oil and gas. It is expected

that the production of oil will be approximately

61 million tonne while the demand level may

touch 370 million tonne and above. Similarly

the gas production will rise 170 million cubic

meters of gas per day, while the demand level is

predicted to touch 606 million cubic meters of

gas per day. India faces an uphill task to meet

the demand in next decade.”

Mr Maulik JasubhaiGroup CEO, Jasubhai Group & CHEMTECH Foundation

“Chemtech would have not been able to

organise the series of conferences and

exhibitions without the support of its

advisory board members and industry

leaders who have supported the vision since

its inception.”

Engineering Opportunities – Emerging Technologies

Mr Shiva ShuklaManaging Director & CEO Abengoa Solar India

“Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) has several

fundamental advantages over other renewables

Energy. CSP is a mature and commercially viable

technology and has got high cost reduction

potential. It is dispatchable renewable energy

source, allows hybridisation with conventional

power possibility and ensures energy security.”

Mr K S RaoVice President, Reliance Industries Ltd

“An integrated engineering approach for

development of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) fields

is being pursued only recently as can be seen

in the on-going Australian CBM Projects. Older

CBM field developments did not adopt a similar

holistic design approach and consequently

those projects have seen increased need for

debottlenecking. The benefits of such an

integrated approach are huge in terms of cost

reduction, efficient field development plan and

ease of operation and maintenance.”

Mr V K JoshiGeneral Manager (Sales), ThyssenKrupp Uhde

“Gasification is a proven technology; a vast

number of gasifiers are operating since

decades successfully on commercial basis. The

technology allows flexibility of feedstock and

polygeneration of products. It is an environment

friendly technology.“

Ms Suhani JhanwarTechnical Professional – Process, KBR Technology

“The objective of almost all the refineries of the

world is to change carbon to hydrogen ratio. All

the refineries take high carbon containing, low

hydrogen containing crude and they process

into high hydrogen and low carbon containing

products. And the only way to mathematically

change this ratio is to either add hydrogen or to

reject carbon.”

(From L to R): Dr J Mounton, Business Development Director, Sasol (I) Pvt Ltd; Mr S Karkare, AVP – Projects & Procurement, RIL; Mr C M Venkateswaran, CEO, Aker Powergas Subsea Pvt Ltd; Mr Shailen Ruparel, Director – Sales, Fluor Daniel (I) Pvt Ltd; Mr Harry Breijaert, VP – Global Supply Management, Jacobs Engineering; and Mr Bhargav Khaund, BDM, Sasol BCS India Commercial share the dais during EPC Conference 2013.

Construction – Advanced Techniques

Dr Reinhart VogelManaging Director, Linde Engineering India Pvt Limited

“For quite long, construction techniques have

been underestimated for successful execution

of an EPC project. We have to recognise that

construction plays a major role in success of

any project. Also, safety is of prime importance,

and contactors in India need to pay much

more attention on safety and training aspects

at the construction sites.”

Mr Zafar KhanGroup Head, HSSE Leighton Welspun Contactors Pvt Ltd

“The principal hazards at refineries are fire

and explosion. Refineries process multitude

of products with low flash points. Although,

systems and operating practices are designed

to prevent such catastrophes, the risks run very

high in the refineries.”

Mr C S RaoManager, Regional Construction, Praxair India

“Since our labour is not trained, our schedule

is never maintained. We should have proper

facilities to train our employees those working

on sites and ensure adherence to safety norms

through appropriate on-site training.”

Mr Rajeev KumarJoint General Manager - Projects, Larsen & Toubro

“Project managemnet team highlights

the critical issues of EPC project which are

documented in form of actions & commitments

and reviewed during subsequent meetings.

Work pack is an element of WBS based

primarily on discipline , which is used to focus

on construction efforts based on the predefined

priorities of WBSs and can be exclusively

monitored, resourced and executed until the

progress has advanced sufficiently to shift the

focus to systems completion.”

Supply Chain Management – New TrendsMr C M VenkateshwaranCEO, Aker Powergas Subsea Pvt Ltd

“When you talk about the subject of EPC, the

mention of supply chain management and

supply chain management strategies are

absolutely imperative. And it plays an important

role in any EPC project. Companies are

becoming more proactive and focusing issues

such as value than just cost.”

Mr Harry BreijaertVP – Global Supply Management, Jacobs Engineering

“The capacities and capabilities of Indian

companies have increased dramatically over

the last 10 years, and India has got several

advantages over China which include strong

engineering capabilities, vast number of English

speaking professionals and above all producing

finest engineers serving the industry globally.”

Dr Jacques MountonBusiness Development Director Sasol India Private Limited

“There is strong competitiveness among the

industries in India. Some have become best in

class in the world in size, scale, efficiency, service

levels etc. However many companies still show

a lack of planning and demonstration of eye for

details – requires meticulous follow ups.”

Mr Shailen RuparelDirector Sales, Fluor Daniel India Pvt Ltd

“Risk management will become an embedded part of supply management, and continuous improvement of these capabilities

will be a major corporate priority model to an enterprise-wide excellence model. Effective risk management strategies will help

achieve a competitive advantage rather than simply providing a defence against unwanted events.”

Mr Bhargav KhaundBusiness Development Manager, Sasol BCS India Commercial

“Best country sourcing is a structured approach

to global sourcing of capital and maintenance

replacement material & equipment and

eventually services from markets that offer the

best value.”

Project Management

Mr B K DuttaDirector, Refi neries, BPCL

“Three things are really very disturbing when it

comes to project execution in India – delayed

project time, cost overrun and quality lapse.”

Mr C J ParekhDirector In-charge Projects, Toyo Engineering

“Delay in delivery of FIM / critical equipment has

cascading effect on project schedule and cost.

Lack of commitments to schedule, quality by

vendors, delay in handing over of construction

site by the owner and insufficient laydown areas

for construction are some of the challenges that

EPC sector faces today. High attrition rate of

experienced engineers also adds to the woes.”

Mr Vijay PranjapeManaging Director, Jacobs Engineering India Pvt Limited

“In the last five years, as the data suggests, as

much as 95 to 99 projects have been delayed.

Some projects even operate with a time delay of

185 per cent.”

Mr Stephane JuilletHead of Risk Management Dept, Technip France

“Holistic approach towards risk management

process would be whereby responses to the risks

are formulated, justified, planned, initiated,

progressed, monitored, measured for success,

reviewed, adjusted and closed.”

Mr S K ShirguppiGroup Director, Engineering Design and Technology Business, Rolta India Limited

“The user industry is changing and demands

new technologies and tools for optimising

performance. Ideally, it is essential for all of us as

the EPC industry to manage the lifecycle cost of

the projects right from the time of the beginning

of the project.”

Mr Kancherla UmamaheswararaoDirector Technical, Intergraph Consulting

“For an owner or operator, delivery of CAPEX

projects to budget/schedule and safe, efficient

production and operation are the most

important. So, for neither the EPC contractor nor

the owner the engineering stage of a project is

seen as the most important; what they want is

better procurement & construction information,

efficient operations and maintenance.”

Investment Opportunities

Mr P D SamudraExecutive Director – Sales & Member of the Board, Uhde India & Sr VP - Business Development, ThyssenKrupp Uhde for India & MENA

“As India is being professed as a superpower

in 2050, the country will have to increase

capacities across the core sectors of Oil & Gas,

Refining, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Steel,

Power and Paper & Pulp etc.”

Mr Sanjeev ShahGeneral Manager - Projects, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd

“India will be offered immense investment

opportunities in Petrochemical Industry in the

years to come. However, this will mandate the

need for the manufacturers to adopt global

benchmarks in improving efficiencies in

production as well as supply chains.”

Mr Piyush TaliwalSr Manager – IEA and Capital Investment, Lanxess India

“Lanxess has made significant investments in

large on specialty chemicals at production sites

in Gujarat and has set up Greenfield capacity

with over ` 500 crore investment and Brownfield

project in Madhya Pradesh with investments of

` 584 crore.”

Mr Ravindra SinghDirector Technical, Petronet LNG Limited

“Current demand-supply scenario of LNG in

India makes for a good business case for setting

up LNG terminals, even with all the announced

terminals coming on stream in future. Huge

demand-supply gap is expected to go forward

indicating scope for more LNG terminals.”

Mr C M T BrittoDirector - Technical, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers

“With the announcement of new investment

policy, a string of new large sized fertiliser

plants, will see the light of the day. Sudden spurt

in project activity is likely to overburden the

equipment manufacturers. European countries,

because of their low order book are likely to pose

fierce competition to Indian industry.”

Mr P PadmanabhamED - Petrochemical, BPCL

“On average over the medium term, petrochemical

offers higher profitability than fuels only refinery.

Combined refinery-petrochemical complexes can

be best option for global competitive advantage

and low cost feedstock from refinery leads to better

synergies and value addition.”

Bowden, CEO & Managing Director, Essar Project

(India) Ltd argued over the traditional approach

of splitting the project in E-P & C followed in India

during the panel discussion at EPC World Expo

2013, organised by CHEMTECH Foundation.

Predicted future investment in the Indian chemical

and petrochemical sector will create huge demand

for capable EPC companies in the country. However,

as the fact remains, Indian EPC companies are not

seen as capable partners for many and a lot of

foreign players are likely to be benefited.

The discussion focused on the scope for EPC

players, their risk taking capabilities, challenges in

the industry, characteristics of different types of

project execution methodologies, etc.

Panel Discussion: Refinery Petchem Integration Mr Saikiran Krishna MurthyPartner, Mckinsey “The topic Refinery Petchem integration is

very close to my heart. There has been a lot of

discussion over the years as to why don’t we

have more investments particularly in India with

integrated sites. There are no majors in India

who have really made that investment.”

Mr Amit ChaturvediHead Cracker Business Group, Reliance Industries Ltd

“Integration of refinery with petrochemical units

offers huge potential to utilize off gases in most

efficient manner in any of the units. In fact using

refinery products as feedstock in downstream

petrochemical units can bring substantial

reduction in working capital.”

Mr Subhash SahniVice President, Triune Energy Services Pvt Ltd

Olefins + AromaticsMr D P MisraAdvisor, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd

“The Indian petrochemical indutry is taking

strides with regards to olefins , but activity with

regard to aromatics is quiet low , which needs

to be given adequate attention for the holistic

growth of our downstream chemical industry.”

Mr Puneet PuriBusiness Development Executive, Lummus Technology Inc

“Fundamentally, there is huge disparity

between the prices of crude oil and natural

gas. Petrochemical manufacturers are relying

on gas as a feedstock due to its availability

in abundance at more competitive price in

comparison with crude oil .”

Mr Makarand DixitHead Marketing - Petrochemicals, ONGC Petro Additions Ltd (OPaL)

“Global ethylene demand and supply is projected to grow 4 per cent in projected period between 2012-17. Capacity to produce

wthylene is growing in tandem with the demand.”

Polymers & ElastomersMr S MitraExecutive Director - Petrochemicals, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd

“In India, current average petrochemical

consumption is much below the global average

and particularly polymers, which stands at

6-7 kg as compared to global average of 30 kg.”

Mr Virendra RathodHead Synthetic Rubber Business, Reliance Industries Ltd

“Elastomers find a wide range of applications,

but mainly it is for the tyre and the automobile

related applications. Nearly 60-70 per cent

of the elastomers are consumed by the tyre

industry and various components that go in

the automobile industry.”

Mr C PaparaoSr Exec VP - Polypropylene business, Reliance Industries Ltd

“The global Polypropylene demand is 200 million

tonnes and growing at 3.6 per cent in the last

5 years. China has the growth of 9.1 per cent,

South East Asia 5.2 per cent, Middle East 6.35 per

cent and India 7.3 per cent. In the last 5 years,

India has seen the highest growth of 12 per cent.”

Mr Rajesh DeshpandeGeneral Manager, Finolex Industries Ltd

“Economic recovery is supporting PVC demand

and global oversupply situation is thus

creating a more competitive international

market environment. This will force producers

to become more cost-effective by adopting

competitive technologies, which will help them

to produce PVC in a more efficient way.”

Base Chemicals + Specialty ChemicalsMr Saikiran Krishna MurthyPartner, Mckinsey

“Chemical industry has very successfully done

over the past few years on getting more and more

out of the same asset and get more and more

profitability out of the same sale. That has been

the magic of the industry’s performance in the

past 10 years. We have outperformed not just our

suppliers, but also our customers.”

Mr Viral VoraMarketing Manager - Fluropolymers, Arkema

“Corrosion resistance solutions will be a major

concern for the next 10 yrs or more. Corrosion

happens with failure as chemicals permeate

from one surface to another thus resulting in

component failure. Polymers which offer very low

permeability can significantly reduce the risk of

such failures.”

Mr Amol DesaiHead, Business Development (EPS), Supreme Petrochem Ltd

“If you look at the styrene monomer market in India last year, it was about 6 lakh metric tonnes, as against the world market of

about 300 lakh metric tonnes. The segment-wise distribution of the use of styrere in Polystyrene would be about 30,54000 tonnes

and EPS would be just 95,000 tonne.”

Asset ManagementMr Mukund V MavalankarDirector Technical, Bharat Forge Ltd

“The meaning of asset management has

changed over many years. Asset Management

is very important because it’s a system that

monitors and maintains assets for us for better

utilisation. These assets can be tangible

or intangible.”

Mr Arindam MazumdarEngineering Manager, Honeywell Process Solutions India

“Advanced Process Control is the replication of

the most efficient and knowledgeable operator,

who understands the plant dynamics, and is

able to predict the plant behaviour, control the

process, concurrently utilise every opportunity

to optimise, within the plant operating window

(hard & soft constraints), every minute, 24 hours,

throughout the year.”

Mr Kishor RahejaSr Deputy General Manager - Oil & Gas, Water, Larsen & Toubro Limited – Control & Automation Business Unit

“Terminal network is widespread in any

country, especially in India, where the demand

is very high. These terminals are put up at

very set locations where the demand is high

and logistically from where it is easier for the

oil companies to deliver it to the retail outlet

network which is around that terminal.”

Safety & Security

Mr Pramod SrivastavaVP-Projects-Vadinar Ports & Terminal Ltd, Essar

“In the refinery or petrochemical or any industry,

the safety of plant machinery and, most

importantly, people is very important, and is

of prime concern of the management. For any

incident or accident, which leads to loss of

property, in few cases death, are irreparable. In

this field, instrumentation and automation plays

a very vital role in creating the facility which will

be used to shut down systems.”

Mr Thorsten SchaperProduct and Sales Director, Protego India Private Limited

“We are manufacturers of flame arresters.

Accidents are not predictable. Even in a country

like Germany, where safety measures and safety

requirements are very high, accidents happen.”

Mr V P RamanDivisional Director, Mott MacDonald

“The prime objective of any engineering

consultant is to ensure safe design of the plant,

anticipate all potential types of accidents and

to provide appropriate protective systems,

procedures, devices etc. to mitigate the damages.”

Mr Chetan BhensjariyaHead Instrumentation Engineering - L&T Chiyoda

“The selection of an alarm priority depends

heavily on the consequences of the abnormal

condition if the operator fails to take corrective

actions in a timely fashion. For each impact,

the consequence of an operator failure to take

action shall be determined. The worst case

impact determines the consequence of High,

Medium or Low.”

“MRPL has a design capacity to process 15

mmtpa and is the only Refinery in India to have

two Hydrocrackers producing Premium Diesel

(High Cetane). It is also the only Refinery in India

to have two CCRs producing Unleaded Petrol of

High Octane.”

Mr Neeraj AgrawalChief Engineer, NPCIL

“Safety Critical Systems are those systems

whose failure could result in loss of life,

significant property damage or damage to the

environment. System Reliability can be improved

by: Improving System Specification, Detailed

discussion with Developer/Vendor at each stage,

and Extensive Testing.”

Mr Manoj ChandrashekharMarketing Director, GE Energy

“A compressor available with 80 per cent

availability running at 60 per cent efficiency

doesn’t make sense. What you require is a

compressor running at 90 per cent availability

and 95 per cent efficiency. So the technologies

that are required for making a machine produce

more and give more during the operational

stage also slightly changes.”

PANEL DISCUSSION: Challenges in Automation

From Left to Right: Mr Pankaj Chadha - Business Director, Emerson Process Management; Mr Ashish Bhandari, GM-India, Measurement & Control Solution, GE Energy; Mr Nandakumar- Managing Director, Chemtrols Engg Ltd; Mr B R Mehta, Sr Vice President,Reliance Industries Ltd; Mr P D Samudra- Executive Director - Sales & Member of the Board, Uhde India & Sr Vice President - Business Development, ThyssenKrupp Uhde for India & MENA; and Mr Dilip Sawhney, Regional Director, Rockwell Automation.

Mr Ashish BhandariGeneral Manager-India, GE Energy

Looking at information, analysing information,

driving results from information is faster today

than was 10 years back. Simultaneously, devices

are also changing. We need to move fast with

time, because when software moves, it moves

much faster than the pace at which the devices

and communication move.

Mr Dilip SawhneyRegional Director, Rockwell Automation

The problems that the manufacturers are trying

to solve are of a very high level. If you are a

company that is trying to compete for business,

and if you are at a manufacturing space, you

are worried about competition; you are thinking

about how do I do it faster and increase

my productivity.

Mr NandakumarManaging Director, Chemtrols Engg Ltd

Faster advancements - newer components,

newer facilities for testing, better upgraded

facilities for faster turnout, internationally

accredited testing agencies, retaining skills

available within the company, supplying the

product globally - is the biggest challenge the

automation industry is facing today.

Mr P D Samudra Executive Director -Sales & Member of Board

Uhde India & Sr. VP Business Development,

ThyssenKrupp Uhde for India & MENA

There is an urgent need to make the

technologies capex and opex oriented. We

are going to have a very difficult future in EPC

business, thus change ourselves in the coming

years. We need to change our mindset about EPC

bidding by adopting a collaborative approach.

Mr Pankaj ChadhaBusiness Director, Emerson Process Management

If you look at the history of instrumentation and automation and control, most of the R&D has been happening outside our

country. We are importing these technologies and deploying them within the country, and the pace of deployment has improved

over the years. Our consciousness towards safety and reliability has been improving quite a bit. The environmental laws are

changing. These will pose challenges for the adaptors and users of the industry, as well as for the manufacturers of these

technologies. Development of the products locally, too, will pose a challenge for us.

Mr Nandakumar- MD, Chemtrols Engg Ltd, Mr Ashish

Bhandari, GM-India, Measurement & Control Solution,

GE Energy, Mr. Dilip Sawhney, Regional Director,

Rockwell Automation, Mr P D Samudra- Executive

Director – Sales & Member of the Board, Uhde India

for India & MENA, Mr Pankaj Chadha – Business

Director, Emerson Process Management discussed

the challenges the automation industry in India is

infested with during the panel discussion at Industry

Automation & Control 2013.

The biggest challenge in the automation industry,

today, is innovation or continuous development.

The country needs internationally accredited testing

laboratories or a unified and common infrastructure

for testing. Cyber security, too, is becoming a

challenge for the automation provider.

Industry institute partnership, too, is imperative

in todays’ scenario. Competition for increasing

productivity, developing the products locally, too apart

from the rest, will pose a challenge for the industry.

Industry Initiatives in Water ManagementDr P K TewariHead - Desalination Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

“Wastewater management is one of the most

important aspects of resource management

which includes purification, contaminant

removal & desalination, which would provide

ample potential for the researchers to develop

innovative technologies for cost reduction.”

Mr Prasana ShahManaging Director, Shah Technical Consultants Pvt Ltd

“Major part of water supplies never reaches

the urban local bodies. Mumbai is a classic

example and it is estimated that there is a

loss of 1000 million liters per day , which

can easily meet the requirement three cities

approximately the size of Indore.”

Mr Nitin UmralkarGeneral Manager, Ion Exchange (I) Ltd

“Industrial waste water treatment has gained

significant momentum in past 5-7 years. A

recent study has indicated that only 10-15 per

cent waste water is getting recycled in India.

Barring 10-15 per cent , which may not cannot

be treated at all, there is still a huge potential for

the industry to benefit from this by large.”

Dr Abhay KumarAssociate Vice President (New Product Development), Eureka Forbes Limited

“As per census of 2011, treated water availability is only 37.9 per cent for public water supply system and untreated water is 68.3

per cent. The survey further indicates that 36 per cent of households have to fetch water from a source located within 500 m in

rural areas, 100 m in urban areas, and 18 per cent still fetch drinking water from a source located more than 500 m away in rural

areas or 100 m in urban areas.”

Mr Sajid HussainHead O&M Water Reuse, Tamilnadu Water Investment Company Limited

“Tamil Nadu is water-stressed region due to

lack of fully flowing perennial river in the state

and took the lead on ZLD. The state depends

on rivers from the neighbouring states & water

sharing is enmeshed in disputes. The state was

compelled to take steps to address the landmark

industrial pollution cases in Vellore & Thirupur.”

Managing Ganga & Other Water Bodies

Dr Shyam AsolekarProfessor, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai

“One usually encountered solution to treat

the sewages and wastewaters to regulatory

standards and then dispose them off into

receiving bodies. The other less favoured

solution is to treat the sewages and wastewaters

to much HIGH standards and then recycle and

reuse them.”

Dr Indrajit DubeAssociate Professor, Law School, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

“India does not have any law or legal

understanding till now regarding river basin

management. Though there are several

legislations in different layers, which one or

other way, are applicable on the basin.”

Dr Vinod TareProfessor, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur

“For optimal utilisation of available water in

sustained manner it is absolutely essential that

this total cost is properly accounted for, and

priced equitably. We believe that ‘polluter pays

principle’ should be applied in its true spirit and

in case of joint responsibility, cost should be

shared on equitable basis.”

Mr Paritosh TyagiFormer Chairman, CPCB & Chairman & Managing Trustee, IDC Foundation

“Water quality in a river is a product of

turbulence, aeration, interaction with sediments,

aquatic life in river body and on bed, and

exposure to sunlight. All of them are denied to

water that flows theorugh a tunnel or pipeline.”

Big Challenges - Smart Solutions

Mr Dadasaheb ChandaneProject Director, SPML, Mira Bhayandar Project, SPML Infra Ltd

“Political decisions overrule the engineering,

feasibility & project management, which result

in delay of the projects, increased costs due

to political interference, scope & specification

deviations occur leading to disputes between

the project owners and contractors.”

Mr M K SinhaExecutive Member, Narmada Control Authority

“Sardar Sarovar project envisages construction of 163 m high concrete gravity dam across Narmada river to store - MCM of Water

to provide irrigation to a command area of 17.9 Lakh ha in Gujarat and 2.4 Lakh ha in Rajasthan. It also intends to generate

1450 MW of hydropower through RBPH (6X200 MW) and CBPH ( 5X50 MW) and provide drinking water to important urban centres

and enroute villages.”

Mr A B PandyaDirector General - National Water Development Agency, Government of India

“Water management revolves around multiple

societal issues which requires change of mind

set. Any amount of law enforcement cannot

happen unless there is a general cooperation

from the society that user is merely borrowing

water from the system and has the responsibility

to see that it gives back to the system.”

Mr Anand MadhavanHead Energy & Urban Infrastructure, ICRA Management Consulting Services Ltd (IMaCS)

“Cost of procuring water has increased notably

due to water scarcity in the past years however,

technology developments over the last 15-20

years have resulted in significant improvements

in efficiency in water recycling and reduction

in treatment costs thus making wastewater

treatment a feasible option.”

Mr Yatinder Pal Singh SuriCountry Head, Outokumpu India Pvt Ltd

“Water is a finite resource and this issue is

plaguing the country since the availability of

water per capita is dwindling and the demand

is increasing manifolds. The available resources

need to be managed very judiciously and

conserved for the future generations.”

Mr Rajesh SinhaPrincipal Investment Offi cer, International Finance Corporation- South Asia

“At ULB level by & large people do not wish to go

for PPP mode of contracting since the contracts

are poorly structured and there are serious

problems with the financing of projects. Those

who are taking risks in financing are the ones

who are interested in making a foray into the

country or who do not wish to run the business

in sustainable manner as PPP model but make

their profits by undertaking EPC activities only.”

Mr Rahul BedmuthaAssociate Director, CRISIL Risk & Infrastructure Solutions Ltd

“There has been a dramatic increase in

investments in the waste water infrastructure

since the introduction of JNNURM. Prior to

JNNURM the investments stood at around

4000 crore during the period 1980- 2005, which

increased to ` 79617 crore during 2005-2012 in

water. The Government envisages investments

of approximately ` 563000 crore from

2012-2031 in this segment.”

Dr Vinod TareProfessor, IIT Kanpur

“Preliminary estimates suggests that nearly

` 50,000 crore (USD 10 billion) is required to be

invested over the next 25-30 years to improve

the water quality and sanitation situation in the

Ganga Basin alone.”

Mr Paritosh TyagiFormer Chairman, CPCB & Chairman & Managing Trustee, IDC Foundation

issue is the sourcing and storing of the water.”

Mr Ajay PopatCEO-ION Exchange Waterleau Limited & Chairman, CAB WaterEX 2013

“The industry has graduated from the concept

of recycle & reuse of water and moved to zero

liquid discharge (ZLD) and use recovered water

as raw material for industrial processes.”

Mr A B PandyaDirector General, National Water Development Agency, Government of India

“Any availability in a macro sense of less than

1000 cubic meters per capita annually is an

area where we will be going towards the

water stress.”

Statistics have revealed that 24% of country ’s GDP

is contributed by urban cities and it is predicted

that by 2030 almost about 65% of the GDP is

going to be contributed by urban cities, which

means that there is a lot more deal of urbanisation

which is going to take place. The cities are already

getting stressed because of the lack of adequate

water supplies to meet the growing demand

and the future will be all the more challenging.

in terms of final product quality. Regulatory

compliance is one of the most important

aspects that needs to be adhered to while

moving up in the value chain.”

Mr ManikandanProject Manager, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd

“Severe lack of cost and quality dimension ails

the Indian pharma manufacturing industry and

it is far behind in terms of having state of the art

facilities unlike industries such as automotive

and computers etc. Lack of good quality at

the development stage resulted in huge recalls

during the period 2006-2011.”

Mr Gopal NairCEO, Grasp Enterprises

“The USFDA considers PAT to be a system for designing, analysing and controlling manufacturing through timely measurements

of critical quality and performance attributes of raw amd in-process materials and processes with the goal of ensuring final

product quality.”

Biosimilar OpportunitiesMr M S Shankara PrasadManaging Director, SPC Biotech Pvt Ltd

“Globally , biosimilars is a growing market & will

Regulatory LandscapeMr Devinder PalFounder President & CEO, Catalyst Pharma

“In the US the major organisations have

approached the USFDA saying that - as a matter

of pharmacovigilence, it is essential that each

biologic has a unique non-proprietary name

because biosimilar or an interchangeable

biologic product is highly similar to - but not the

same as its respective reference product. Thus

they caution that it would be inappropriate

from the patient safety perspective to use the

same name biologic product.”

Ms Yasmin ShenoyDirector, Regulatory Aff airs, Sanofi Aventis

“There was a notice put up at CDSCO (Central

Drug Standard Control Organization , which

is Indian equivalent of USFDA) have defined

biologic product as something coming from

rDNA technology, vaccines & blood products.

Now over the drug & cosmetics act, these are

included in new drug definition , which means

that forever they will be considered as new drugs

and this also means that there cannot be a

generic pathway for approval.”

Innovation in BiopharmaceuticalsMr M S MahadevanPresident & CEO, Bangalore Biotech Labs Pvt Ltd

“It may be difficult for the Indian biosimilars to

be accepted in the US or developed markets due

to complaince with the regulations.”

Prof Anurag RathoreProfessor, Dept of Chemical Engineering, IIT Delhi

“Europe already has the regulatory path work for

approval of biosimilars. The US has one as well

now , but successful approval through this route

is awaited.”

Dr Sunit MaityAssociate Divisional Head Biopharmaceuticals, Avesthagen Limited

“Biological agents account for a substantial number of new cancer treatments and six of the 20 biggest selling biologicals are

used routinely in oncology. This new wave of biologic therapies is effective but expensive. Oncologists are increasingly concerned

by this trend and look to cost savings as the way to preserve patient access to effective treatments.”

Growth Potential for Biopharmaceuticals

Dr Arnab KapatDirector, Reliance Institute of Life Sciences

“Biosimilar molecules would constitute

significant fraction of total global revenue

earned on biologics within next few years. The

USA is expected to be the largest market for

biosimilars by th ened of this decade. Even Indian

government has put comprehensive guidelines

for biosimilars into effect in the year 2012.”

Dr Prathibha ShettyPrincipal Scientist, Reliance Life Sciences Pvt Ltd

“Regenerative medicine is a new school of

medicine with the promise to address several

unmet patient needs. The ultimate objective of

cell replacement therapy is to address the unmet

medical needs.”

Mr Sudhir VasudevaChairman and Managing Director, ONGC

“The present engineering colleges should shell

out deployable engineers not employable as

industry takes two years to train after empoying

the engineers. Despite lucrative offfers in

the Information Technology (IT ) sector, core

engineering streams are becoming popular.”

Dr Siddartha DasHoD of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

“In the educational institutes, we have the

teachers of engineering. We don’t have

practicing engineers. In IITs, the practical

summer training is disappearing.”

Mr Sanjay JoshiManaging Director, Aker Powergas Pvt Ltd

“After two decades of an Information Technology

(IT ) boom, the spotlight is slowly re-focusing on

the knowledge industry, an area in which India

has come into its own. Country currently import

65% of our crude oil requirements, which leads

to huge pressure on our import bill. Also, energy

security is of paramount importance for the

country. To bridge the gap between supply and

demand we need to accelerate our Engineering

and Production activities.”

Mr A K PurwahaCMD, Engineers India Limited

“The Indian oil & gas sector has enormous

potential in the coming years, as it will

continue to play a pre-eminent role in

meeting the country’s energy requirements

and will be the key driver of India’s economic

growth. The engineering opportunities

other than petroleum and gas are vast in

sectors like renewable energy, nuclear power,

infrastructure, city gas distribution

and fertilisers.”

Knowing the Unknown

Dr Abha DoshiPrincipal, MET Institute of Pharmacy

“India is a great country with huge population,

and immense growth opportunities. After

pursuing higher education overseas, one should

come back and serve the country.”

Mr P D SamudraExecutive Director – Sales & Member of the Board, Uhde India & Sr VP - Business Development, ThyssenKrupp Uhde for India & MENA

“People staying away from their domain

knowledge have not really been successful. They

remain insecure all the time in their job. Ups and

downs in the business and in the world have

affected them most. But if you have the domain

knowledge ups and downs will not matter.”

Mr A K BalyanChairman & Managing Director, Petronet LNG

“Although there are about 125 universities,

not even single university is preparing

drilling engineers. Though we are creating

infrastructure for training & development

but even then there is a shortage of drilling

engineers , geophysicists and geologists in

the country. .”

Mr Richard ClemensManaging Director, VDMA

“Robot systems turn modern final packaging

lines into fully automated logistics solutions in

confined spaces. The use of robots will make

packaging processes flexible, will decrease the

space requirements for a packaging system

effectively, will guarantee continuously high

quality, and will reduce downtimes.”

New Frontiers - New Vistas

Mr Yatinder Pal Singh SuriCountry head, Outokumpu India & Chairman, Student Outreach Programme“The Icon lecture series aims to encourage, inspire the young engineers to follow their passion of engineering for getting into a

field which they dreamt of while entering the engineering studies. The entire program aims to “Develop Future leaders for the

Industry” and inspire the engineering students to stick to their core engineering streams through inspirational showcasing of

success stories of engineers in the industry.”

Building Sustainable Future

Mr Suresh PrabhuFormer Union Minister, Government of India & Brand Ambassador, CHEMTECH World Expo 2013

“Industrial development without damaging the

natural resources is a challenge the entire world

faces today…and students, as the leaders of

future, need to understand the fact that they, as

engineers of tomorrow, have an uphill task to

complete for the betterment of country.”

Dr V S RajaProfessor, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

“Technology has got big role in ensuring

sustainable development all around. Students

opting for engineering streams must be ready

for the challenge….”

Mr Anne FeenstraDutch Architect

“If you think about sustainability, if you think

about being a responsive person as an architect,

there are many ways you do that and one of

those is using local material and techniques

but with innovatio you will have to cultivate the

‘responsiveness’ in you and should protect in

during all your professional lives”

Mr Mika ToikaVP, Outokumpu

“We do not have any other planet to live. And

hence, we will have to ensure that the one

which we have must be protected against all the

damages…..the ultimate suitability challenge or

rather principal is that no law or no actions shall

be made that harms the next generations…..

and you (students) must ensure that this

principal is practiced by you religiously…..”

Mr Sam YamdagniPresident and MD, Xylem Water Solutions India Pvt Ltd

“Sustainability is all about adding values to our work…values that protect our surroundings and our environments against

any hazard… the onus is on you …the studentsv ...you should learn how to add values to your work you do after you

complete your engineering courses.”

Mr Ashwini HiranCOO, Consumer Products, Tata Group

“You might be a good entrepreneur, but may

not be good corporate citizen. You will have to

establish a balance between your entrepreneurial

skills and corporate citizenship. Translating a

personal energy of an outstanding leader into

a corporate energy of an enduring company is

of great importance….such values and ethics

distinguish a company and its employees…..”

Mr Vinod TareProfessor, IIT Kanpur

“Ethics and values are nothing but the tools

to manage your personal and professional

behaviour honestly…you as leaders will be

successfully managing a company, positions

or portfolios in big corporate houses, but

you cannot manage them all successfully

unless you manage your actions….direct or

indirect….”

Dr Sujaya BanerjeeChief Talent Offi cer and Sr VP – HR, Essar Group

“Chemtech Foundation is an initiative that will

allow students to understand what the industry

expects from them. Bring passion and pride to

your profession…undying passion for what

you are doing and undying commitment to

excellence is something that will help you clime

the ladders of success….”

Values and Ethics: What do these mean in today’s context?

Dr Thomas ScheuringCEO, DECHEMA

The fact - that how successful you are and how

hard you have worked throughout your life -

should never develop arrogance in you… stick

to your values, be what you are and ensure you

don’t hurt anyone around you…..

given a fillip to the Indian industry.

Hon’ble Mr L K Advani, Chairman, BJP Parliamentary

Party presided over the ceremony as the Chief

Guest and along with Mr Suresh Prabhu, Former

Union Minister, Govt. of India & CHEMTECH

World Expo 2013 Global Brand Ambassador,

Mr Jasu Shah, Founder & Chairman CHEMTECH

Foundation; and Mr K Venkataramanan, Managing

Director & CEO, Larsen & Toubro presented the

awards to the winners in various categories

during the valedictory awards ceremony. Over

300 distinguished industry stalwarts attended the

felicitation ceremony on 15th January 2013 at The

Lalit in Mumbai.

Mr L K AdvaniChairman, BJP Parliamentary Party

“In its long journey, CHEMTECH has enabled

thousands of Indian industries to showcase

their capabilities to the rest of the world. It

has provided a platform for international

companies in chemical industry to enter the

Indian market. If India’s chemical industry has

achieved a global reputation today, a good

deal of credit must certainly go to CHEMTECH

conferences & exhibitions.”

Mr Suresh Prabhu Former Union Minister, Government of India & Brand Ambassador, CHEMTECH World Expo 2013

“Chemtech is a significant event for Indian

process industry. Chemtech Foundation is one

of the few organisations that have been able to

organize such a big event consistently for years.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of Mr Jasu

Shah, who, leveraging on his untiring efforts

succeeded in bringing leaders from India and

abroad under one roof to ensure growth of

chemical industry in the country.”

Mr Jasu ShahFounder & Chairman, CHEMTECH Foundation

“CHEMTECH Foundation has always been

fortunate to receive support from wonderful

leaders from India from abroad. We are

very thankful to DECHEMA and VDMA from

Germany which have supported the foundation

throughout its journey, strengthening the

business relations between Germany and India.

Further, the response from stalwarts of Indian

chemical industry has also been overwhelming.”

Mr K Venkataramanan Managing Director & CEO, Larsen & Toubro Limited

“‘Project Management’ is still developing in our

country in a professional way. And conferences

like CHEMTECH World Expo with a focus on

EPC try to bring little more visibilities to the

facts that ‘project management’ or executing

projects in an integrated manner is also

a science.”

The award winners of CHEMTECH CEW Leadership & Excellence Awards 2013 take centre stage with the honourable Chief Guest Mr L K Advani, Chairman BJP Parliamentary Party, Mr Jasu Shah, Founder & Chairman CHEMTECH Foundation, Mr Suresh Prabhu, Former Union Minister, Govt of India and Mr K Venkataramanan, Managing Director & CEO, Larsen & Toubro.
