Evidence suggests that adherence to these exercise programmes are alarmingly low, and patients do not feel supported once they leave hospital. The exercises are often performed incorrectly when unsupervised, therefore not gaining maximum benefit. Further challenges to healthcare economics mean an ever increasing emphasis on self-management, with reduction in face-to-face rehabilitation. THE PLAN: We will develop an app that is able to provide interactive biofeedback, and assess whether this concept can make a difference to clinical outcome following hip and knee replacement surgery. This will be tested in the clinical population at the Beacon Hospital and involve key stakeholders throughout the process. At the same time, as an ESR an opportunity exists to gain experiences across multiple sectors including, computer science, eHealth strategy and clinical settings. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Use the inertial measurement unit within a smartphone strapped to the leg to give real- time feedback to users. A mobile app would also provide education and progress reporting, as well as send data back to the physiotherapist to monitor progress. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 676201 Interactive Exercise Biofeedback in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Rob Argent ESR 2 How sensor data looks What sensors measure How the app may look Project aims: - To understand the role of adherence in exercise rehabilitation, and how biofeedback can support this. - To highlight current state of the art with regards to home-based connected health rehabilitation aids. - To develop a prototype model of the software outlined above. - Conduct a pilot study to assess usability and highlight potential refinements of this prototype. - Conduct a clinical trial assessing functional and patient reported outcomes in a comparison to normal care. Outcomes will include WOMAC, pain, range of movement, timed walking and patient experience.
