Chantel Richardson is noordinary high school athlete.

And she's used to that senti-ment.

“Everybody she used to runagainst considered her a profes-sional,” said her father, Deric,when Chantel started beatingopponents at track for bothAAU and CYO.

Chantel was 9 years old.“She was just cleaning up on

all the events," he added.Since, Chantel has trained

with professionals and compet-ed year-round.

The Richardsons left Collin-wood before Chantel's fresh-man year and moved to ChesterTownship.

The reason was WestGeauga schools, her mother,Danielle, said.

“It was the best decision,”she said.

As she sat around a tablewith her family, her track coach,Mike Taurasi, and her guidancecounselor, Megan Petronsky,Chantel officially signed on torun at George Mason Univer-sity in Northern Virginia nextseason.

Chantel was a state champi-on in the 100-meter hurdles hersophomore year. She was on thelong jump her junior year.

Now she's a senior, and theexpectations are just as high.

"I want them both," she saidof winning the events this springin Columbus at the state meet."I want it. And I want the statehurdles record."

At 5-foot-1-and-1/4-inch —Chantel’s exact description ofher height — the track star is atouch shorter than many of hercompetitors.

Russell Township Trusteesmet last Wednesday with repre-sentatives of the FairmountCenter for the Arts to open adiscussion about ways the cen-ter could grow and prosperafter a very hard year.

Township officials touredthe 9,000-square-foot facility,located at Fairmount andChillicothe roads, before their

meeting to see the basement artroom and the dance studio onthe second floor.

As Executive DirectorJessica Leary Allen talkedabout the activities at the centerand how much children andadults enjoy the classes andevents there, several officialssaid their families have takeninstruction there.

They also admired the art-

work hanging in the main floorstudio remaining from a recentartist’s show while foldingtables and chairs were set up onthe wood floor for the meeting.

“To me, this is a real assetfor the community,” saidTrustee Jim Dickinson. “I’d liketo see it preserved.”

That has been a challengeover the last year, Allen said.

Everyone was so sure thefacility would be shut down dueto lack of funds, so many of the17 members of the board oftrustees resigned in Decemberand no classes were scheduledfor January, she said.

However, donations in-creased and the center hasremained open, Allen said, hersentences punctuated by thethump-thump-thump of dancerspracticing in the upstairs studio.

“Fairmount Center hasalways been lean and is more so,now,” she said. “I’ve been here ayear and a half and we’re peel-ing back the layers of theonion.”

Grant Cleveland, presidentof the decimated board oftrustees, said the five membersare actively recruiting a fewmore who are willing to be veryinvolved in the work that needsto be done to get the centerback on a sound fiscal track.

For the time being, the pro-gramming income is keepingthe operation afloat more sothan donations, both privateand from organizations like the

Ohio Arts Council, Allen said.Cleveland said the center

gets about 80 percent of its rev-enue from tuition and 20 per-cent from grants.

“Our demographics are notgrant friendly,” said TrusteeJustin Madden, adding GeaugaCounty’s per capita income andproperty values are too high forlocal nonprofits to qualify formuch funding.

Allen, who does the grantwriting for the center, said theremay be opportunities for corpo-rate sponsorships, once the boardof trustees is re-established.

“We need to find the rightapproach,” she told trustees,adding the center doesn’t needmillions of dollars.

“When someone gives us a$1,000 gift, that’s huge. Huge,”Allen said.

That amount would enablethe instructors to buy easels sostudents could have their paint-ing classes outside in goodweather, she said.

Meanwhile, Allen said thecenter staff has been strength-ening the most popular pro-grams in dance, art and music to

She estimated the centerneeds about $3,000 per monthto pay the mortgage and main-tain the building, which wasbuilt in 1970 when Ron and JanKumin established the place.

The group brainstormedabout making the building morevisible to the public, collaborat-ing with other arts organiza-tions in the Chagrin Valley,advertising events with bannersalong the main roads of thetownship, allowing the public touse the facility for events andreworking the center’s mission.

Russell Fiscal Officer ChuckWalder said they may want tocompartmentalize theirfinances.

Trustee Jim Mueller saidthere is no local senior activityfacility so the center might wantto establish more programs andareas attractive to older partici-pants.

Cleveland said the problemis the winding stairway in thebuilding’s turret is not good forseniors.

“Five months of the year wecan do things outside,” Muellersaid, adding a concrete porchwith a roof over it built on theside of the center could bringmore seniors to the facility.

Mueller also urged Cleve-land and Allen to network more

with area organizations andschools that might find the cen-ter attractive — if they knew itwas there.

“They become part of thevehicle for spreading the wordin the community,” Muellersaid.

He offered to introduceCleveland and Allen to some ofthose groups.

“When she gets her mind seton something, you can't railroadher off of that,” said her dad,who actually coached her incross country while she was inmiddle school at St. Jerome inCleveland.

Chantel actually began ingymnastics before she reachedthe AAU national champi-onship as a high jumper at 12.She competed in the pentathlonbefore finding her home withthe hurdles, long jump andsprint events.

“It’s been exciting,” saidgirls track coach Mike Taurasi.“She's put a lot of hard work in,and track has been a priority forher since she was a young kid.”

Taurasi said his role this yearwas to keep her healthy untilthe end.

Chantel chose George Mas-on because of its highly regard-ed criminology program andclose proximity to Washington,D.C. She hopes to one day havea homeland security job in thegovernment, her mom said.

George Mason competes inthe Colonial Athletic Associa-tion and has a well-regardedtrack program.

“The campus is pretty,”Chantel said.

And while she has thoughtabout the Olympics, that levelof competition is not currently apriority.

“If the opportunity presentsitself, I would take,” she said.“Whatever happens, happens.”

Chantel's soon-to-be-9-year-old sister, Cantrelle, is in thirdgrade at Lindsey Elementary.Cantrelle often wears Chantel'smany hooded sweatshirts, pur-chased and won over years oftrack competitions, to school.

She also has much of her sis-ter’s spunk.

“No,” she said, smiling, whenasked if she was proud of hersister. (She wore Chantel’sGeorge Mason sweatshirt.)

Cantrelle began running at 2years old and seems more thancapable of carrying the Rich-ardson banner.

“She’s fun to be around,” herguidance counselor said ofChantel. “She really transi-

tioned well to West G academi-cally and she’s a solid student.She’s ready for collegiate work.

“We’re going to miss her.”

Williams is All-AmericanThe Williams family is one

reason West Geauga track'steam has developed a strongtradition, and Kelly Williams, a2011 graduate, took seventh thismonth at the NCAA IndoorTrack and Field championshipsin Fayetteville, Ark.

With a 4:39.30 mile time,Williams is a red-shirt freshmanat West Virginia University.

“We are all so proud of thisyoung lady,” coach Sean Clearysaid.

Kelly has two siblings whowere also All-Americans, herfather wrote in an email.Katelyn (2007 graduate) was ahigh jumper and Brett (2009)was an Academic All-Americanfootball player at KenyonCollege.

The Park Bench Donation Program is designed to increase publicenjoyment and participation in the Chester Township Park.

The program also provides an excellent opportunity to honor a loved one,recognize someone’s special achievement, make a donation

in the name of a business sponsor, or to sponsor our beautiful park.In addition, a plaque can be ordered to add to your gift

to be placed on the bench to acknowledge the donation.

Benches are made from pressure treated wood in a redwood stain color providingminimum maintenance and UV protection. The frame is constructed of all welded hotdipped galvanized steel with a final powder coated finish in black applied for durability.

The Chester Township Park District will order, assemble and secure the bench withan in-ground installation and perform general maintenance and upkeep around thebench area. The Chester Township Park District will replace any bench deemeddamaged by the Park Board for the useful life of the bench as soon as practical.A bench is guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years.

The cost of the 8 foot park bench, including installation, will be $500.

Malbasa comes to NDCLfrom Benedictine High School.

The West Geauga Swimmingand Diving Team celebratedone of its most successful sea-sons in the 16-year history ofthe program at its awards ban-quet at Dino’s Restaurant andBanquet Center March 6.

Both girls and boys teamsfinished the dual meet seasonwith 5-4 records — the first timeboth teams have posted winningrecords in the same season.

Both teams also claimed thebest-ever finish among the 92teams competing at the districtchampionship meet in February,with the boys finishing in eighthplace and the girls in 16th.

The West Geauga boys qual-ified five members to the statechampionship meet in Canton.

Senior Gabe Nock’s second-place finish in the 50-yard

freestyle at the district champi-onship meet at Cleveland Stateearned him an automatic spot atthe state meet, where he fin-ished fifth.

He also qualified for bothmeets in the 100-yard freestyle

— finishing seventh at the dis-trict meet and 21st at state.

Nock and classmate MikeWenrich competed for the thirdtime at the state meet in theboys 200-yard freestyle relay,this year alongside sophomoreRyan Gleske and freshmanTucker Harvey.

The foursome finished theevent ranking 19th in the state.

Junior diver Kyle Wells fin-ished seventh at the districtmeet to qualify for the statemeet, where he finished 22nd.

Freshman diver RachylAnderson strongly representedthe girls team in the champi-onship run.

She finished fourth at thedistrict meet and was ranked15th going into the state compe-tition, where she moved up twospots to 13th with a schoolrecord score of 342.05 for her 11dives.

The Wolverines girls made abig splash at the district meet.

Sophomore Kirstin Boni fin-ished 11th in the 200-yard indi-vidual medley and 16th in the100-yard freestyle, each with aschool record time.

Junior Natalie Poremba fin-ished 21st in the 200-yard indi-vidual medley and 24th in the100-yard backstroke, with aschool-record time in that eventas well.

and senior captain LibbyWatson to swim in the 200-yardmedley relay, finishing in 12thplace with a school record timeof 2:00.37.

It was the last swim banquetfor an outstanding group of sen-iors, five of whom are departingas four-year letter winners: JoshEgan, Ryan Lucas, Nock,Wenrich and Watson.

The other seniors are JeffreyCizek, Chad Heppert, BobHumanchuk and Julia Petrac.

Throughout their tenure onthe team, the seven senior boyshave been central to the manyof the team’s high water marks,helping the boys win four first-place trophies at the PerryInvitational and two titles eachat the Bedford and ClevelandHeights relay meets.

They took home several ofthe top awards, led by MVPaward winners Nock andWatson (who shared the girlsMVP honors with Kirstin Boni).

Team Spirit awards werepresented to Egan and Human-chuk, who were boys team cap-tains this season.

Coaches awards went toGleske and Poremba, whileMost Improved Swimmers wereRyan Zuzek and Jordyn Lees.

The Face of TyrannyRecently, I was the object of

an article in both the Chester-land News and the Maple Leaf.

I was referred to as a “heck-ler” because I cracked a joke,which caused a reaction fromone of the trustees.

I attend very few ChesterTownship Trustees meetings, butas I thought about what occ-urred, I could not help butreflect on what ThomasJefferson said, “When the peo-ple fear their government, thereis tyranny; when the govern-ment fears the people, there isliberty.”

Which would people ratherhave? Lately I wonder. I votefor liberty.

The reaction to my kiddingaround was a threat of a policeaction. Wow, I was caught off-guard.

We have seen this type ofbehavior before in history and Iam sure you can think of exam-ples.

After reflection, I decided tonot let this go unchallenged.Each citizen that attends thesemeetings is there for one rea-son; to hold our elected officialsaccountable. That is a noble anda proper reason.

Our elected officials (notKen Radtke) just passed ananti-fracking resolution.

This was done without apublic forum or a well-researched and well-reasonedbasis. They spent $85,000 on abio retention system, whichaccomplishes almost nothing to“protect the environment.” Thebio cell required a redo of theparking lot, raising the cost toapproximately $250,000.

They spent over $800,000 ona property, which has become apark, and then $20,000 to put aconservation easement on it,

which bars Chester residentsfrom ever being able to use theproperty differently, even th-ough in 50 years, Chester mightbe a different place.

Then they violated the termsof the easement. They pur-chased an $110,000 house, letthe pipes freeze and paid anoth-er $6,000 to repair all the dam-age. It now sits unused.

I could go on, but I thinkyou get the point.

Some might say this is mov-ing forward, I personally thinkit is moving backwards and Iwish more folks from Chesterwould attend these meetings.

If it weren’t for the few thatdo attend, more nonsense mightjust happen. If you are curiousabout what you read in thepaper, come and see for your-self. I promise you it will be eyeopening.

I agree with another Jeffer-son quote: Freedom is lost grad-ually from an uninterested,uninformed and uninvolvedpeople... It is unfortunate thatthe bureaucracies that we trustare not trust worthy because wehave not done our part to bewatchful.

Bear in mind we have anelection this year.

It was a privilege to serve asPresident of the Kiwanis Clubof West Geauga this past year.

From the first scoop of dirt atClay Eddy Fields/Kiwanis Parkto spreading mulch at LindseyElementary School, with manypancakes and Christmas trees inbetween, it’s been an honor.

There are many people andorganizations to thank for theirhard work and dedication.

The Chesterland Lions Club,for the pavilion at Clay EddyFields and the playground atLindsey Elementary.

The work put into theretaining wall, moving the swingset and drilling holes to installthe playground took many

evenings and weekends. Theymade it possible to install andfinish the project on time.

The Rotary Club ofChesterland, for their ShiningStarz and with helping installthe playground.

The Chesterland Chamberof Commerce, for their lemon-ade stand at the community pic-nic, and for their thank you toeveryone who helped.

The newest group, BusinessesSupporting West Geauga, forpurchasing the swings and paint-ing the swing set at LindseyElementary.

Eugene DiFranco, withouthis commitment to the commu-nity and his generosity, the

fields would still be on thedrawing board.

Also thank you to KitMcKinney, Linda Palchick andthe Nautica gang, travel soccer,West Geauga Rec Council, anymy friends at the MetzenbaumCenter, who all put Clay EddyFields over the top.

To my long time friend,Bernie Mandel, for alwaysbeing there, not just for me, butfor all the children as well.

I have been a ChesterTownship resident and business-man for over 20 years.

I’ve been involved in manycommunity projects and theefforts of our service groups,volunteers and excellent WestGeauga Schools make our com-munity a great place to live andraise our children.
