Following the advice “Carpediem,” of noted Roman poetHorace, about 25 West GeaugaLatin students did “seize theday” last Thursday.

They worked feverously tocreate mosaic garden stones asgifts for their favorite teacher,Bill Prueter, who plans to retirethis year after 30 years of serv-ice.

With help from parents, thestudents mixed concrete,poured it into round metal pansand personalized them withmosaics, beads, shells and mes-sages, making each one an origi-nal work of art.

The students were dividedinto three shifts and workedaround various sports practicesand a previously scheduledband concert to complete theirprojects.

They presented their origi-nal creations to PrueterMonday night at the conclusion

of the school’s annual studentLatin awards program.

The students who compriseWest G’s Latin Club invited for-mer students and Prueter’s wifeto attend and join in on the fun.

They also created a Face-book page where present andformer students could add theircomments and sing the praisesof Prueter.

Although, considered a“dead” language because it isno longer learned as a nativetongue, Prueter apparentlyinstilled a love of the languageand the Roman culture amonghis students.

From his toga-making worksessions held at his home to hishallway chariot races at schoolusing ropes, sturdy flat-bottom

trays and eager students, Prueterencouraged creativity and madethe language come to life.

“We celebrated Roman holi-days and held ceremonies,” sec-ond-year Latin student LillyMakee said when asked abouther favorite part of the classes.

According to her, Prueterled them to explore the history,literature, custom and culturesurrounding the language.

“He makes it fun,” TylerBrininger said. “You just enjoythe experience without knowingthat you are learning anything.It’s not until later that you real-ize you actually learned a greatdeal in the process.”

There are a number ofadvantages to studying Latin,according to Tyler’s mother,Tamara Brininger.

“It really improves theirvocabulary and helps with theirscores on college entrance

Maybe the coach thought histeam needed a change ofscenery.

But after just two homegames in the first month of theseason amid cancelations on afield that grew more weeds thangrass, Phil Byron decided tostart from scratch.

“It wasn't a varsity field, itwasn't safe, it wasn't aesthetic,”Byron said. “We’ve been roadwarriors. When our field wasn’tplayable, we just flipped gamesaway.”

Whatever the reasons, it isgood times for Phil Byron andhis West G baseball Wolverines,winners of five straight. Theteam’s ninth win, 4-1 overCrestwood, eclipsed last year'swin total.

The Wolverines took infieldpractice before the Crestwoodgame as the former infield layback behind right field, a pile ofdirt and sod.

The now all-dirt infield issmooth, and hard.

Ground balls bounced trueand the team made just oneerror on an 80 degree day May2.

By all accounts the team isplaying its best baseball of theseason at the right time.

“It’s good to get five in a

row,” said senior 2B AlexGrazia. “We’re playing prettywell as a team. We started off alittle slow, but we’re definitelykicking it in before the play-offs.”

Grazia helps anchor a teamwith senior strength up the mid-dle. When West Geauga is at itsbest, Harrison Sigman (2-2, 2.74ERA, 24 strikeouts in 23innings) is on the mound; Cal

Slusarz (9 runs scored) is atshort; Grazia plays second; andsenior lead-off hitter NoahBidar (.375 BA, 10 SB's) patrolscenter field.

“That’s our speed andstrength right there, and they’vecut down on the mistakes,”Byron said.

“It started off a little rough,”Slusarz said of his season. “But

In 1995, the ChesterlandRotary Club funded and con-structed a brick walkway aroundthe gazebo in the Chester Town-ship Park.

Families, businesses andorganizations had the opportunityto display their name on theseengraved bricks.

Now, 18 years later, the RotaryClub is reconstructing the walk-way to include more bricks aswell as refurbish the existing ones.

“Over time, some of thebricks have deteriorated andthe entire walkway has sunk,”said Rotary member DerekTaylor. “It’s also become a triphazard”, added Taylor.

Taylor and a committee con-sisting of eight members, includ-ing Ben Pintabona, resurrectedthe project last year, with every-thing getting started this pastwinter.

She said the language haspractical applications for studentwho pursue medicine, law andscience, all disciplines that useLatin terms and names.

According to another parent,several of the students have oldersiblings who are former studentsof Prueter’s who credit theirLatin studies as part of the reasonthey did well on college entranceexams and were accepted toschools such as Notre Dame andNorthwestern.

“He treats us all as if we arethe smart kids,” VictoriaGrabinski said.

Brenden Judson explained,“There’s a lot of freedom in hisclass and he trusts us that we willstudy hard and learn from ourexperiences.”

One mother, Linda Todaro,shook her head over the appar-ent spell Prueter has on his stu-dents.

She said they vie to learnenough to go to Latin competi-tions in Columbus, a regime ofstudy and nine tests held during aweekend, after a week of school.

Todaro said the students dowell in the competition, oftenplacing in the top three amongschools and outscoring privateschool students who have hadsix years of Latin versus fouryears at West G.

“That’s not something thatwould appeal to you or I, nor itis something that would appealto most teens, but he somehowhas them convinced it is fun,”Todaro said. “They study on thebus on the drive there, take atest as soon as they arrive, studyuntil 1 a.m., sleep and takemore tests the next day. And,they tell me this is fun?”

Said Alex Concilla, “That’swhy we call him ‘Captain Latin.’”

Another parent marveled atthe closeness of the students.

“They include athletes, musi-cians, serious students and awide cross-section of interests,yet they are very close,” shesaid.

Who’s idea was it to paytribute to him with gardenstones?

“All of us,”said sophomoreMax Kucera. “Romans wereknown for their mosaics tilesand we’ve been to his house. Hehas a Roman garden there aswell as on school grounds near

the entrance to the high school.”“With all the heartfelt work

the students have done, we’reexpecting there won’t be a dryeye in the house when theypresent their garden stones tohim Monday night,” TamaraBrininger said.

When the Affordable HealthCare for America Act, morecommonly known as Obamacare,takes full effect next year, its reg-ulations about insuring part-timeworkers might have repercus-sions on local government, espe-cially those with volunteer firedepartments, Chester Townshipofficials said April 18.

If a seasonal or part-timeemployee works more than 120days per year, or more than 30hours per week, he or she willbe considered full-time andmust be offered health careinsurance or the employer willbe hit with a hefty $2,000 pertotal employee penalty, ChesterTownship Fiscal Officer MikeStark said.

The regulations could forcelocal governments to cut backon the hours their employeescan work, cut back on the num-ber of days they can employ aseasonal worker or decide notto hire additional workers thatwould add up to more than 50employees, the officials said.

The discussion came astrustees voted to hire a part-timeseasonal worker to performgrounds maintenance during thegrowing season, a practice thatmany local communities follow.

Others hire outside land-scaping companies.

“If it’s more than 120 daysand we haven’t offered thembenefits, we could be fined,”Stark told trustees, adding therule applies to employers withmore than 50 employees.

“With our police depart-ment and fire department, we’reclose to that threshold,” TrusteeKen Radtke said. “We need tobe looking at this at a month-to-month basis.”

Because most area firedepartments, and many localpolice departments, have part-time workers who also work forother communities, the issuecould become complicated,trustees said.

They also said they would becareful to keep all seasonalhires under the 120-day limit tomake sure they will not be con-sidered as full time under thenew law.

“Seasonal employment iscounted in days and not hours,”Trustee Mike Joyce said.

Radtke asked where he gotthat fact.

Joyce said he has talked toofficials in the City ofWilloughby, who told him theyhave hired two attorneys to sortout the employment rules in thenew law.

“I don’t know where it’sgoing, but our firefighters are

part time,” he said.Stark added, “There’s so

much to be determined yet. Noone knows everything at thistime.”

He said he has heardemployers say they will pay thefine instead of insure their part-time workers, but he said thenew rules will fine an employerfor all of his or her employeesregardless of how many areinsured.

“It will be $2,000 for allemployees, on everybody, notjust on the people you don’tpay,” Stark said.

Joyce added, “Suffice it tosay, we’re all watching it and areconfused by it.”

I’m starting to play the type ofbaseball I know I can play, start-ing to hit the ball a little more,making fewer errors in the field,and I cleared my head, and I'mjust having fun playing baseballand that’s the key.”

The Wolverines scored firstin the first inning when Bidarreached on an error and scoredon Bielek’s hit down the rightfield line. Bielek stole second,went to third on a ground balland scored on a wild pitch.

Mazzurco, a sophomore whonow has 20 innings and an ERAunder 2.00 as the team's thirdstarter, pitched masterfully, mix-ing his fastball, change-up andcurveball through theCrestwood order.

Mazzurco, working with jun-ior catcher Ross Clark, threwsix innings, allowed one run on

five hits and struck out four.“I felt great, and it felt good

to get a win,” Mazzurco said. “Igot shelled against Brush; itfeels good to get this one.”

Koller reached on an errorto start the fourth inning andscored on Sigman’s double intoright field. It was Sigman’s firstdouble and 11th RBI.

Grazia, who admittedly hasstruggled at the plate this sea-son, delivered a two-out singleto left that scored Sigman.

“I haven’t been seeing the

ball well and I’ve been hittingthe ball at people,” said Grazia,who also pitched one inning forhis third save.

Those four runs were allWest Geauga would need toimprove to 9-6 on the seasonbefore Sunday’s tournamentdraw at Jefferson and twogames Monday and Tuesdayagainst rival Chagrin Falls thatwere finished after deadline.

“We're playing well rightnow and I’m really content withwhere we are at,” Byron said.“I’m not saying we don’t needto improve, because we all needto get better. But I’m content

with the strides we have madeup to this point.”

May will be busy before thesectionals begin May 13.

Carmen Engoglia hit a HRthat turned heads away fromthe varsity field to the juniorvarsity field, which is behind thevarsity field. Engoglia's blastlanded beyond the left fieldfence, as the varsity dugoutwondered who had hit it.

“I knew it would be Car-men,” Bidar said after the game.

The team plans on re-planti-ng the sod this fall and working

to get a running water source tothe field, an issue Byron blamedfor its poor conditions.

There are quirks, too, thatneed fixing.

Like third base, which stayedin its peg long after everybodyleft the field.

“Put five guys on it and tryto get it out,” Byron told histeam, laughing. “That thing islike Merlin’s sword, the sword inthe stone. It’s right there. Goand get it.”

What do water purifiers inGuatemala, flowerbeds at WestGeauga Schools, May Day and asophomore offensive tacklehave in common?

In a multiple choice quiz,one answer would be “mulch.”Another would be “school spir-it.” The rest — fill in the blanks.

Last Wednesday after school,about 25 members of the WestGeauga Schools football team,coach Lou Cirino, members ofthe schools’ EnvironmentalDiscovery Project team and itsadvisor Irene McMullen gath-ered at the high school for somehands-on volunteer work.

In less than two hours, thestudents weeded and mulchedthe seven flower gardens on theWest Geauga campus.

McMullen, who supervisedthe weeding detail, said she gota kick out of watching Cirino’spre-game pep talk with his play-ers about the value of doingsomething for the community,responsibility and the pridethey will feel when the job iswell done.

He even had to show a fewthe right way to use a shovel,she said.

“I think the boys thought itwas fun,” she said. “Whenyou’re done, you can see you’vedone something.”

Sandwiches from Farmer inthe Deli were an added bonus,but McMullen said the projectitself was rewarding for thework crew.

The Guatemala connectiongoes back a few years.

Once a brick is engraved, it’sfilled with adhesive paint tomake the lettering stand outand help preserve the engrave-ment.

The Rotary Club consists ofvolunteers from the communityand will be doing the labor, startto finish.

Deadline to order the bricksis June 15. The finished projectwill be done by mid August, intime for Chesterfest, the annualChester Township communitypicnic.

Proceeds from this projectbenefits the Chesterland RotaryFoundation, a nonprofit and taxdeductible organization.

“This is a great way to showcommunity support and spiritand pride,” Taylor added.

Other community projectsfunded and organized by theChesterland Rotary Clubinclude Breakfast with Santa,the Gazebo Christmas treelights and decorations, holiday

food baskets, painted maps onthe asphalt of playgrounds atthe elementary schools and giv-ing personal dictionaries toeach individual elementaryschool child.

In addition to local projects,the club has also done nationalwork. After the devastation ofHurricane Katrina, the club pur-chased and rebuilt an old book-mobile, filled it with books anddrove it down south to donate

to families effected by the hurri-cane.

“This is a very productive,very unitive project,” explainedPintabona. “I don’t think anythingbrings a group of people togetherlike a service project with a com-mon goal,” added Pintabona.

Kelly Wright and ShawnCooper joined up to form acore group and they startedentering environmental chal-lenges.

Most recently, the EDP wonan award from the LexusEcological Challenge for theirproject to provide water puri-fiers and cook stoves to a vil-lage in Guatemala, said MaxKucera, 16, offensive tackle forthe West Geauga football teamand a member of the EDP.

They chose the project,organized their approach, paidfor the stoves and purifiers andsent a Spanish-speaking expertto Guatemala to handle thatend of it, Kucera said.

EDP has applied to a num-ber of challenges every year andhas a little prize money savedup, he said.

The seven annual flower gar-dens created around the WestGeauga school campus by stu-dents require maintenance, butthe school’s operating budgethas been caught in the same fis-cal wringer as other districts,McMullen said.

Urged to do their communi-ty service by Cirino, 29, thefootball team has taken themaintenance on.

The team does other choresin the school district and anydonations go into the footballprogram, Cirino said.

The coach, who has beenteaching government and con-temporary issues at WestGeauga for six years, said hegoes along and works with theboys to set the pace and helpthem learn a good work ethic.

“They love our school,” hesaid. “I had a coach who didthat for me.”

Some of the EDP prizemoney is used to purchase themulch, which is sold by the WestGeauga la cross team to raisefunds for their activities —another lesson in leveragingresources for the good of thecommunity, McMullen said.

Not only do they sell themulch, they will deliver it to thebuyer’s home, she said.

“It’s so sweet. This is why Ilove to live in the country,”McMullen said.

Getting the flowerbeds inorder is something of an annualritual carried out in a groupeffort before prom, so theschool looks great, she said.

Cirino, who graduated fromWest Geauga, really knows howto motivate kids and the resultsprove it, she added.

“It’s such a thoughtful proj-ect and a way of building team-work and pride in your school,”McMullen said.

Andrew Todaro, 16 and amember of the EDP, said therewere a lot of people at the MayDay event and he praised thefootball team for really diggingin.

“We gave them food andthey worked hard,” he said.

Chester Township Trusteesappear so frustrated over place-ment of recycling dumpsters,they would like to get rid ofthem altogether.

Last month, Trustee KenRadtke suggested moving thebank of dumpsters from theircurrent Parkside Drive locationback to the old Chester Schoolsite at 12535 Chillicothe Road.

Township officials and ParkBoard members have toldtrustees they need to be movedbecause they are too close tothe park, are on a street fre-quently used by police and firevehicles, and have become asafety issue.

At the April 18 meeting, tworesidents had objected to theChester School site becausethey said dumping of trash andgarbage at that location hadbeen a constant problem forneighbors.

Radtke said the townshipwould install security cameras ifthe dumpsters were moved.

Trustees said a secondoption, placing them at theunused Fire Station 2, wouldnot be acceptable because oftraffic concerns.

Last Thursday, Radtke saidhe had asked trustees to lookinto the Chester School site, buthad received no feedback.

He said he had received arough estimate that it wouldcost about $18,000 to locate thedumpsters there, with a cost of$15,000 for concrete and $3,000for fencing.

“Any thoughts?” Radtkeasked.

Joyce said he has discussedthe issue with Chester TownshipPark Board member Joe Weissand Weiss told him he mighthave a solution to the problem.

“He was kind of excited andseemed to be having somethingup his sleeve,” Joyce said,adding he would like to followup with Weiss before makingany decisions.

Joyce said the dumpsters aremore trouble than they’re worthand he might be in favor ofdoing away with them altogeth-er.

“There’s no good place toput the dumpsters,” Joyce said.“They’re nice to have, but it’s acase of ‘not in my backyard. I’mnot sure we even need thosedumpsters.”

He said any money theymake from the recycling is lostin the road crew’s time in clean-ing it up.

“This board hasn’t discussedthis yet, but I’m rather dis-turbed how haphazardly we usethat facility,” Joyce said.

Trustee Judy Caputo saidshe is concerned about peopleusing the center to dispose of

their household garbage insteadof paying about $300 per yearfor curbside pickup.

“It’s a sign of the times,”Caputo said. “It’s a touchy sub-ject and I would ask the resi-dents to be more thoughtful.The last thing we want to do ischase people down by theirlicense numbers.”

Caputo said she also wouldlike to get rid of the dumpsters,because the township has tospend time and money cleaningup after people who use themto get rid of garbage, but thecenter does serve a purpose.

“Did you know that thesheriff’s department has a full-time deputy who spends histime running them down andprosecuting them?” Joyceasked.

Parkview Drive residentAlbino Fisco said he has livedon the corner of Parkview andSeminary Lane since 1967, closeto the old Chester School, andhe and his wife witnessed peo-ple dumping mattresses, couch-es, and trash at the recyclingcenter when it was locatedthere.

“You’d see garbage all overthe place,” Fisco said.

He told trustees he and hiswife were worried that trusteesmight move the center back tothe school site.

“My wife is not happy atall,” he said.

“People pull in SeminaryLane and use the dumpsters atDrug Mart; I have called thepolice on them,” Fisco said,adding he knows of peopledepositing garbage in dump-sters outside office buildings.

He said many of those busi-nesses have installed locks ontheir dumpsters to prevent thepractice.

“Another option would bepushing it closer to the policestation,” Radtke said.

He added that the townshipused to have curbside recycling.

“Unfortunately, that pro-gram went away,” said Radtke.

Fisco asked trustees when adecision would be made.

Caputo said she would callhim the next time the issue is onthe agenda.

May 11: PerennialGardeners Plant Sale8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Perennial Gardeners areholding the annual plant sale inthe Chester Township Town Hallparking lot.

The sale features annuals,hanging baskets, herbs and hun-dreds of perennials, many ofwhich have been raised by clubmembers, who will be available toassist in choosing the appropriateplants for each person’s gardeningneeds.

A new addition this year willbe a raffle. Purchase tickets for $1each or six for $5 and get theopportunity to win rose bushes,shrubs, gift baskets or a massage.

Profits enable the club to con-tinue planting and caring for thebandstand and corner park atstate Route 306 and U.S. Route322, offer scholarships to horticul-tural students, present educationalprograms at each monthly meet-ing and support many other gar-dening activities in the community.

The Perennial Gardeners meetat 7 p.m. at West Geauga MiddleSchool the fourth Wednesday ofthe month. Membership is open tothose living in the West Geaugaschool district.


Geauga Fresh FarmersMarket

The Geauga Fresh Farmer’sMarket will open on May 11.

Vegetable and flowering plants,spring produce and salad greens,hanging baskets, cut flowers, honey,cheese, meat, baked goods, soapsand lotions, and other seasonalproduce and crafts available.

Master Gardeners will be onsite to provide demonstrations,answer questions about growingseedlings and vegetables as wellas other plant questions.

Located in the South RussellVillage parking lot at Chillicotheand Bell roads.

Hours are 9 a.m. to noonevery Saturday, rain or shine, untilearly October.

Special events will include

cooking demonstrations, kids’ day,corn celebration, strawberryshortcake day, the annual salsatasting contest and the annualtomato tasting contest.

Recently the Interact Club has adopted the YUDA bands project. This project allowsWest Geauga High School students to sell handmade leather bracelets where the

funds raised will help educate youth in Guatemala, Zambia and Kenya.

The cost for one bracelet is $7.00. 175 bracelets are all it takes to send one child to school,and our goal is to sell 550 bands that allows 3 children to get an education.

WGRC Day CampRegistrationThe West Geauga Recre-

ation Council will host the tra-ditional West G Day Camp forchildren in grades kindergartenthrough fifth and a MiddleSchool Camp for kids in gradessixth through eighth. The campground, located

adjacent to the West GeaugaMiddle School in ChesterTownship, offers 15 woodedacres with a covered pavilion,heated swimming pool, volley-ball court, soccer field, basket-ball courts, an arts and craftspavilion, and playgrounds. This year, in-person registra-

tion will be at the West GeaugaRecreation Council camp-ground (adjacent to WestGeauga Middle School) from 9a.m. to noon on Sat., May 18. Registration for all of

WGRC’s summer programsavailable, including Learn toSwim.Day camp activities include

swimming, art, sports andwoods time.Middle School Camp is held

every Thursday.Sixth through eighth graders

are off on field trips including:bowling, kayaking, a Captainsgame, the beach, roller skating,water park and more.The ice cream truck visits on

Wednesdays. Kids can bring money for a

refreshing treat. Special visitorscome to the camp includingJungle Terry, musicians, magi-cians and Geauga Park Districtprograms. On hot days, the firedepartment may come andspray the kids to cool them off. Camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
