Luck takes a big part in the

industry. The Brains, Bronze,

and Boss revolve around this

―industry.‖ An industry that

really isn’t as it seems. Good

artists getting noticed is the

key thing in the industry,

and luck plays such a big

part when trying to be a

successful artist. Frank Sina-

tra said, ―Bad, Mirror, Five

People often remark that I'm

pretty lucky. Luck is only

important in so far as getting

the chance to sell yourself at

the right moment. After that,

you've got to have talent

and know how to use it.‖ So

in the end it all really comes

down to how you get on

and stay on.

The definition of luck is-the

force that seems to operate

for good or ill in a person's

life, as in shaping circum-

stances, events, or opportu-

nities.‖ The industry to me

revolves around luck in the

beginning. For example,

Chief Keef got noticed be-

cause he was a little boy

spazzing out because he

was out of prison. The world

fell in love with what and

how the young man was

expressing himself. Then

people asked the question,

who is Chief Keef? Everyone

was wondering the same

thing. People researched

because they needed to

know why this boy was so

excited. Behind the curiosity,

his songs surfaced. With all

the attention he was get-

ting, people couldn’t help

but to love his songs. So

therefore ―luck‖ took part in

Chief Keef getting noticed.

Now is the moment in Chief

Keef’s career that he needs

to stay relevant. And with

him and Young Chop work-

ing together, it puts Keef at

an advantage because Chop

makes Trap Beats, and that

is what people are into now.

Chop is like one of the best

Trap beat makers, and Chief

Keef...well he’s got luck. The

idea that Chop and Keef

crossed paths by coinci-

dence...is all a part of the

luck.

No school, no teachers,

Everyone has heard the term ―bad luck.‖

Some believe it more than others, while

some don’t pay any mind to it. For the

Irish, who have a rep as being lucky,

this is a very serious topic.

To have bad luck is to ―have

misfortune that results into unfavorable

outcomes.‖ It is believed that certain

decisions you make may determine the

luck or unluckiness of your future. These

superstitions or beliefs cannot be

proved, but have been around for years

and are likely to stay around. Some

common superstitions include: the

breaking of a mirror, opening an um-

brella indoors, and black cats. Before

black cats got a bad rep, they were con-

sidered rock stars of the animal world in

3000 BC according to

www.todayifoundout.com. It wasn’t

until the middle-ages in Europe that

they were to be considered bad luck.

They became associated with witches

because they were being fed and cared

for by old women, later accused of

witch craft. There are a number of su-

perstitions that can bring you bad luck,

will have good luck.

If you see a horseshoe which was

lost, you will have good luck.

If you throw rice on a new bride

and groom, they will have so many

children.

If you dream about a white cat, you

will have good luck.

Bad Luck Superstitions

If you see a black cat which walks

towards you, it brings you good

luck

If you open an umbrella indoors, it

brings you bad luck.

If you sleep with your feet towards

the door, a nightwalker will steal

your soul.

If you whistle at night, a nightwalk-

er will come to your home.

If you dream about a dog, you will

have a lot of enemies.

as well as good luck. It is ultimately up

to the people to believe, but I myself do

not. Here are some typical superstitions,

do you believe?

Good Luck Superstitions

If your right hand itches, you will

earn money.

If you find a four-leaf clover, you

scored 17 points off the bench and was

the main source of scoring for the Irish

the only one; Freshman Cameron

scored 14 points keeping the Irish alive

in this battle. This game was the longest

is Notre Dame History. The Irish won

104 – 101!

Not only has the boy’s team been hav-

ing luck, the Lady Irish have been on a

hot streak as well. With Coach Muffet

McGraw, they have made it to Sweet

Sixteen in 6 out of the 11 seasons and

have had 20-win seasons in 14 out of

the past 15 seasons.

The Lady Irish have posted their best

regular season record in school history

(28-1), in the 2013 season despite los-

ing the Big East Defensive Player of the

Year, Devereaux Peters and Natalie No-

vosel to graduation. The Lady Irish have

only lost to Baylor having the team

posted with #9 Tennessee in Knoxville

and a narrow 1 point at #1 Connecticut

in the last game of the season and win-

ning a triple overtime thriller to close

out Diggin’s career in South Bend.

They have had

luck through-

out the past

games they have played. With the boys

winning a five overtime game against

one of the best teams in the NCAA and

the girls losing some of the best players

they are still triumphing. The luck is real!

Notre Dame has the Luck of the Irish.

Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Basketball

Teams have been unstoppable lately.

They have won games from comebacks,

to not giving up at all since the game

started. St. Patrick’s Day is coming up as

we all know, the time of luckiness, and

Notre Dame’s luck has not stopped yet.

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have

won as some say an impossible game

against the Louisville Cardinals. The Irish

were down in the 2nd half of the game

and struggled as Notre Dame Fans left

the stadium, but they never gave up.

Notre Dame was trailing the Cardinals

by 7 points when Jerian Grant made a

major comeback and scored 12 points

in under 45 seconds. Grant’s ―And 1‖

with 12 seconds left in the game, tied it

60 – 60.

life stories with other people and can

help with grammar as well. Famous

poets such as Maya Angelou, Langston

Hughes, and more all had that experi-

ence expressing themselves about what

they have endured with words.

Experienced poetry involve stories

about gun violence, racism, rebellion

and more about the lifestyle others nev-

er knew about. The truth about Spoken

Word does not have a limitation of

words so you say what and how you’re

feeling. It is almost like singing, yet with

spoken lyrics.

There is a recent song called ―Poetic

Justice‖ by Kendrick Lamar featuring

Drake and the specific lyrics in the song

that highlights its true meaning was

when Lamar says: ―With poetic justice,

Have you ever felt bad about some-

thing that happened in your life? Have

you had any moments when you have

nobody to talk to? Well that’s what spo-

ken word is for. Spoken word can be for

storytelling or poems that you can say

in front of an audience. It gives the au-

dience memorable experiences because

they hear your stories and can connect

to whatever process you went through.

There is a Spoken Word program here

at SSICP and it starts every Thursday. In

the program, they teach students to be

confident and learn how to express

themselves without being fearful.

There will be opportunities for the stu-

dents to get more experienced with

their writing skills.

Spoken word is special because it shares

poetic justice, if I told you that a flower

bloomed in a dark room, would you

trust it? I mean write poems in these

songs dedicated to you and you're in

the mood for empathy; there’s blood in

my pen.‖

In the Spoken Word Program, Mentors

tells us that,‖ Poetry is a sign of love,

thoughts, and sometimes even hate. It

provides intelligence in the mind to

come up with different metaphors. It

also involves a lot of images to see be-

yond the eyes.‖ Poetry isn’t just about

saying how you feel but it can also in-

clude art and rap. Rappers like Tupac,

Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and more are

spoken word artists. Poetry is every-

where in this world, we just need to go

out in express it.

for generations. Not only has Chicago

adapted to their religion, we celebrate

their culture tremendously. We have

things like the Shamrock shake from

McDonalds, Green Beer, the famous St.

Patrick’s Day Parade, our sports teams

wear green, we host the Shamrock

Shuffle 10k race, The White Sox are

known as ―The South Side Irish,‖ and

what better way can we show our love

of the Irish than to color our famous

Chicago River Green.

The Irish are part of Chicago’s most fa-

mous piece of history. The Chicago fire,

in 1871, started in the barn of Irish im-

When you think about the Irish you’re

more likely to think about St. Patrick’s

Day, leprechauns, luck, and maybe

even Ireland, however as stated on

www.lib.niu.edu ―Chicago is one of the

most Irish populated cities in the United

States especially in the 19th

and 20th

centuries, making up 1/5th

of its popula-

tion.‖

Since the 1870s Chicago has easily ac-

cepted the Irish culture into our big city

family, the Irish church: Old St. Patrick’s

Church, located on 711 W. Monroe St,

has been a landmark to the Irish culture

migrants Patrick and Catherine O'Leary.

Because the Irish were so skilled in poli-

tics, decades later, the Irish also became

the single most important race in Chica-

go’s politics dominating the Democratic

party and running the mayor’s office in

Chicago for eight consecutive years—

The Daley’s. With all of the history the

Irish have here in Chicago, it is not hard

to see why they are one of the most

celebrated ethnic groups in the city.

couple of people that agreed that this

could possibly resolve the problem. On

the other hand, many people felt that

the school should provide locks for stu-

dents free of charge.

Initially, we were told we could

not go back in the gym until

everyone had their own lock;

however, classes are back in

the gym and everyone does

not have their own lock. So

what are the risks? If you don’t

have a lock, you need to get

one. The best type of lock to

get is a combination lock. Without a

lock, you are at risk of getting your be-

longings stolen. You might not believe

that, but some of the people around

you could steal your things and could

be the main ones trying to help you find

your items. The same people, who say

―they have your back,‖ could possible

steal your stuff too. At the end of the

day, you are responsible for your own

things. Protect your belongings; buy a

lock because Stealing is Among Us..

Come on SSICP, we have to do better!

March 5th was temporarily the last day

for physical education classes to be held

in the gym. At first, many people did

not understand why we were ordered

to be in a classroom for gym. Students

were told that because of the recent,

continuous stealing, gym

was to be held in the class-

room until further notice.

Some of the students in 2nd

period gym added their

opinion to the situation. One

student stated, ―Maybe they

should put all the thieves in

one class.‖ There were also a

South Shore International Prep has

many clubs. The clubs here are great

and a lot more students should join

them to make them a happier and more

fun place. Here a quite a few clubs this

school has:

Art Club- This one is ran by Ms. Guerre-

ro. In this club, you paint, draw, and

even do crochet. If you are an artist,

why not show off your skills and learn

more techniques here? She will also

help you with these activities.

Chinese Club- Ran by Ms. Wang. She

will teach you how to write, learn, and

speak the Chinese language, and differ-

ent techniques like characters and pin-

yin. You also can learn about Chinese

traditions and holidays.

Beta Club- Ms. El runs this club. This

club promotes students to show their

no matter their beliefs, sexual orienta-

tion, anything that makes them differ-

ent from the other.

Animal Behavior Club- This is the club

that is soon to be established by Mr.

Larson. Most likely, this club will deal

with the different profiles of many spe-

cies of animals and how they live and

act. Visits to the zoo and any animal

related places are also possible.

Spoken Word Club- This is a new club,

ran by After School Matters, that just

began. Always wanted a chance to

speak up? Well, here’s the place for you.

Let this club be your opportunity for self

-expression.

Engineering Club - This club is run by

Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Williams. Please

ideas and leadership roles. It allows

them to serve their high school. Hard

workers with good grades should join

this one.

Book Club- Directed by Ms. Herron. Go

to her club, which is in the library, to

read some interesting books. Some

books they have read are Maximum

Ride, Lost in Time, Freek Camp, and

Delirium. Read all kinds of genres of

books and increase your book

knowledge.

Glee Club- Ran by Mr. Lent. This club

consists of musical groups of male and

female students that show how good

they can sing. Ones who would want to

join this club will surely learn how to

sing different types of genres.

Tolerance Club- Ms. Gomez and Ms.

Chin run this club. This club is shows

that students can accept one another,

help God by his superiors, two years

later, he was appointed the second

Bishop of Ireland.

Many myths surround this day,

such as him bringing back the dead,

and him giving a sermon on a hilltop

that drove away every snake in the

country. First off, bringing back the

dead is not possible, and secondly,

there

were

never

any

snakes native to the mother land, so this

myth is easier to believe. In fact, this day

was initially a Catholic day. What do

you know about that?

Many rituals and traditions are

essential for the Irish Culture and holi-

day. They even have a symbol. Its called

a Shamrock. It is also said that the rea-

son for this being the symbol was be-

cause he used them in his sermons to

indicate how God the Son, God the

Father, and God the Holy Spirit could

exist as different elements in one entity.

He also wore them on his feast days.

So before you sit there and put

on you all green and shamrocks, think

about what the day was initially for and

how it should be celebrated. Its not all

about getting drunk and acting a hot

mess, its to celebrate a stranger who

received a message from God, decided

to obey it and converted sinners unto

God. I can sat Amen to that! Knowledge

of the day means to be clovered in luck.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Saint Patrick’s Day, oh what a

lucky day in the month of March. It’s a

lucky day, but do you know what it’s

about, do you know the inspiration

behind it, or the rituals and traditions?

Everyone who doesn’t celebrate it

tends to exhale ignorance on the issue,

such as stereotyping all Irish as being

drunkards, or they all have red hair and

are leprechauns. There is more to Saint

Patrick’s Day than that, as well as there

are to the people who celebrate it.

The inspiration behind the day

is a man named Maewyn. He was born

in Britain. He wasn’t even Irish, can you

believe that? He was born in about 365

AD. Soon after, he was kidnapped by

Irish men to work as a slave. While cap-

tive, he converted to Christianity and

gained the name Patrick. After six years

of captivity, he escaped to Gaul and

studied in the monastery under Bishop

of Auxerre, a German St. During his

twelve years of training, he knew his

calling was to convert Pagan sinners to

Christianity. Once refused the chance to

their stress. For males, approximately

25% avoided or refused to deal with

their stress, 23% sought ways to distract

themselves away from their stress, 17%

sought out support, and 35% actively

tried to reduce their stress. On the other

hand, when it comes to

females, approximately

19% avoided or refused to

deal with stress, 14%

sought ways to distract

themselves away from it,

22% sought support, and 45% actively

tried to remove stress.‖

I find that a lot of times when I

stress out, I tend to get very ill to the

point of it being hazardous to my

health. I have many triggers that can

cause my stress level to rise and my

body to get the worst of its effects. My

biggest trigger that can send me over

the edge is school. The littlest thing

such as getting a poor grade on a quiz,

Teen stress and anxiety is a constant

growing trend. All throughout the

country, teens are experiencing stress,

anxiety, and stress caused by anxiety.

Stress is pressure or tension

exerted on the body and mind. Stress is

caused by a num-

ber of different

factors and can

potentially be fatal

to one’s health.

Teens and stress

go hand and hand, but there are re-

sources and skills that can be practiced

to put you in control of your stress level.

Anyone who experiences

stress knows that stress can be trig-

gered by many different things. Not

doing well in school, social issues, the

preparation for college, being bullied

and even gaining new responsibilities is

more than enough to send teens over

the edge. According to

www.teenhelp.com, ―studies also

test, or any other assignment puts me in

a very uncomfortable place. Almost

immediately after that is the sweating,

being lightheaded, and getting very

sick. To keep myself from stressing out, I

do breathing exercises and mental pep

talks. I try to remain calm and stay posi-

tive.

Though stress is a common

reoccurrence in the lives of teens today,

it is possible to cope with and some-

times get rid of. Sometimes keeping

yourself involved in fun activities can

easily take the mind and the body off

stressing. Relaxation tactics, rehearsing

and practicing scenarios that can cause

stress to better prepare you for it can be

very helpful as well as beneficial. Learn-

ing coping skills, taking a break from

stressful activities, writing, singing or

any other acts can quickly ease the ten-

sion the body and mind feels from

stress.

What’s this about societies? Well the

National Honors Society is a program all

around the world involving many high

school students. It gives those selected

students who are part of that society a

high ranking, which allows them to be

known. Also, it shows that their aca-

demic levels were above and meet col-

lege standards. The South Shore Nation-

al honors society, is directed by Ms. Cur-

tis, who one of the freshman and soph-

omore teachers in the English depart-

ment. She has high standards for all her

students, even those whose grades are

not perfect.

Are some of the requirements for the

honor society a little too much to han-

dle? Some of the requirements state

that the student must have written

peronal essay, get two letters of recom-

mendation (either being having from

math, science, or their English teacher).

Also, those students have to pay a fee

of $20 and have their transcript. Along

with the above needed, the students

had to submit awards for community

service hours served, and extra-

curricular activities they participated in.

The main requirement that is needed is

that those students have a grade point

average of 3.75 or above. Basically they

need to have almost a 4.0 GPA by the

looks of it to even be considered into

the honors society.

Will you try to be part of the society

next year?

Beth. He takes this and uses it to his

advantage. Once Beth finds out that

Logan had the picture that was meant

to protect her brother, she confused.

Where does this leave her and Logan?

After a turn of events Logan will finally

find out if Beth is more than just a good

luck charm…

The actor for the character

Logan would get no better than Zac

Efron himself. From playing in the earth

shaking Charlie St. Cloud, and the funny

romance 17 Again. He does it again in

The Lucky One playing the role of a

respectable Iraq solider yet, a believer

that a picture can bring luck to him. Zac

Efron was the icing and cake in this

movie. He seems to be the good luck

charm for any movie.

home with her son Ben (Riley Thomas

Stewart) and grandmother Ellie (Blythe

Danner). She seems to have a problem

with trust, which one can

guess is from her ex-

husband Keith Clayton

(Jay R. Ferguson), who

viewers will grow to dis-

like. He tends to be like a

little bug in the movie

that you just want to flick

to go away. She has a

son with Keith, Ben. His

relationship with his fa-

ther would be like an

over achiever coach to

his star player. Ben would

do anything to make his

father proud, even play a

sport that he doesn’t like.

But with Logan he can be the kid who

likes playing the violin and dominating

him at chess. The viewers can see that

Logan is the better father figure, so can

Beth.

Despite her best efforts to

push Logan away, Beth ends up letting

Logan in her life. Of course with the

help of her meddling grandmother,

who instantly warms up to Logan. She

confesses things about her life to him.

He then learns she had a brother

named ―Ace‖ who was also a soldier.

In all my glory, let me be the one

apple that grows at the top of the

tree, I shall shine in this battle we all

know as life. Let my skin be a syn-

thetic material of hate, crime, and

poverty.

The day my body goes 6 feet under

let my words be one of the 7 won-

ders. If my people come to a down-

fall never let my legacy fail.

I stand just a mere black male wait-

ing to exhale.

I stand, the only soul that has been

rejected many times may I rest, in all

my glory!

A Spoken Word Piece -

Take me whole, for my character

aspires to be greater than me. Here

I stand, in all my glory with the

heart of a raging bull, determined

to reach the top of the sky even

though my feet never bother to

leave the ground.

In all my glory, separated from the

rest due to the pigment of my skin.

All my people are expected to

amount to dirt, but as I stand I hope

to pull a nation with me. For my

people will be greater than a poor

image of self- pity.

In 1169 Irish practiced a religion

known as Celtic Christianity. Irish reli-

gion became linked with Catholic and

people were mad because it was part of

the English culture. During the reign of

King James Catholic schools were

closed down and teaching was held at

Protestant institutions. When Cromwell

was king of England he made strict

rules and stopped Catholic holding.

The Fenians were part of a move-

ment in Ireland. They wanted one-thing

and that was freedom of Great Britain.

Some people thought the government

What did Ireland go through in the

past? Ireland is an 89,000 sq. km land of

amazement. There were battles to the

death during the 9th and 10th centu-

ries in Ireland against Vikings, but later

―ran them out.‖ Catholics were accept-

ed in society because of Queen Eliza-

beth so they linked Irish with it. Many

events went on during that time and

changed the way Ireland is today.

Vikings attacked Ireland as early as

795 A.D. They came in warships to take

over but, Irish locals attacked them and

ran away. Ok 17 years, they came back

and took over what is now the Dublin

castle. Vikings were Germans who raid-

ed areas that were wide spread in many

European countries. Also, in 853 Ire-

would save the Irish problem, but it

didn’t, so they thought that the only

way to have a future is if they separated

from Great Britain. Two people name

James Stephens and John O’Mahony

were criminals in Ireland’s eye for com-

mitting crimes for freedom. They es-

caped to America and formed the or-

ganization known as the Fenians.

Ireland is a place where many events

happened. Their history is something

worth learning about. They went had

been through many events that shaped

their culture today. Irish people are in-

teresting to learn about because of their

wars and massive movements.

400 years ago in a village of Ireland, two people met in a pub and married three years later. They started their family and

opened up a small jewelry store. To attest their love for one another they created the Claddagh, which became a part of the

Irish heritage. They made it as distinctive as possible with two hands clasping a heart with a crown above it. They even thought

to make the way you wear the ring, something different and unique. ―The ring worn on the right hand, crown turned inwards,

tells that your heart is yet unoccupied, worn with the crown outwards reveals love is being considered. Worn on the left hand

with the crown turned inwards tells that all your heart belongs to another.‖

The Claddagh ring belongs to a widespread group of rings called ―Fede‖ or faith rings (this loving style originating in

Rome). The two thought to spread their ring (and love) by sending it to Spain where it gained voluminous popularity. The ring

itself will always shine as a symbol of their love for each other.
