Luck takes a big part in the
industry. The Brains, Bronze,
and Boss revolve around this
―industry.‖ An industry that
really isn’t as it seems. Good
artists getting noticed is the
key thing in the industry,
and luck plays such a big
part when trying to be a
successful artist. Frank Sina-
tra said, ―Bad, Mirror, Five
People often remark that I'm
pretty lucky. Luck is only
important in so far as getting
the chance to sell yourself at
the right moment. After that,
you've got to have talent
and know how to use it.‖ So
in the end it all really comes
down to how you get on
and stay on.
The definition of luck is-the
force that seems to operate
for good or ill in a person's
life, as in shaping circum-
stances, events, or opportu-
nities.‖ The industry to me
revolves around luck in the
beginning. For example,
Chief Keef got noticed be-
cause he was a little boy
spazzing out because he
was out of prison. The world
fell in love with what and
how the young man was
expressing himself. Then
people asked the question,
who is Chief Keef? Everyone
was wondering the same
thing. People researched
because they needed to
know why this boy was so
excited. Behind the curiosity,
his songs surfaced. With all
the attention he was get-
ting, people couldn’t help
but to love his songs. So
therefore ―luck‖ took part in
Chief Keef getting noticed.
Now is the moment in Chief
Keef’s career that he needs
to stay relevant. And with
him and Young Chop work-
ing together, it puts Keef at
an advantage because Chop
makes Trap Beats, and that
is what people are into now.
Chop is like one of the best
Trap beat makers, and Chief
Keef...well he’s got luck. The
idea that Chop and Keef
crossed paths by coinci-
dence...is all a part of the
luck.

No school, no teachers,

one week! It’s time for spring
break and even the teachers
can’t wait! But if you’re a lame
and all you think you’re going to
do is sit around and play Black
Ops all day, I’m here to tell you,
you’re not!
Even though there will
be a chill in the air for the first
two days of our break, that
shouldn’t stop you from calling up a
few friends and getting out of the
house for a good hour or so. Nobody
wants a boring spring break so why try
to have one!
Most kids will probably try to
stay in bed all day and sleep! I might just
allow you to do that! We stay up all
night and can’t get up in the morning
anyway, so I won’t bother you! But
make you sure you get up and leave the
house! We’re out of jail for a week!
Don’t engage in any criminal
activity though! Even though there is a
lot of danger in Chicago, you don’t have
to be involved in it. Avoid it if you can
and find a safe place to kick it with your
friends.
Nobody wants a lame, sleepy,

Everyone has heard the term ―bad luck.‖
Some believe it more than others, while
some don’t pay any mind to it. For the
Irish, who have a rep as being lucky,
this is a very serious topic.
To have bad luck is to ―have
misfortune that results into unfavorable
outcomes.‖ It is believed that certain
decisions you make may determine the
luck or unluckiness of your future. These
superstitions or beliefs cannot be
proved, but have been around for years
and are likely to stay around. Some
common superstitions include: the
breaking of a mirror, opening an um-
brella indoors, and black cats. Before
black cats got a bad rep, they were con-
sidered rock stars of the animal world in
3000 BC according to
www.todayifoundout.com. It wasn’t
until the middle-ages in Europe that
they were to be considered bad luck.
They became associated with witches
because they were being fed and cared
for by old women, later accused of
witch craft. There are a number of su-
perstitions that can bring you bad luck,
will have good luck.
If you see a horseshoe which was
lost, you will have good luck.
If you throw rice on a new bride
and groom, they will have so many
children.
If you dream about a white cat, you
will have good luck.
Bad Luck Superstitions
If you see a black cat which walks

If you open an umbrella indoors, it
brings you bad luck.
If you sleep with your feet towards

your soul.
If you whistle at night, a nightwalk-
er will come to your home.

Experienced poetry involve stories
about gun violence, racism, rebellion

Word does not have a limitation of
words so you say what and how you’re
feeling. It is almost like singing, yet with
spoken lyrics.
There is a recent song called ―Poetic
Justice‖ by Kendrick Lamar featuring
Drake and the specific lyrics in the song
that highlights its true meaning was
when Lamar says: ―With poetic justice,
Have you ever felt bad about some-
thing that happened in your life? Have
you had any moments when you have
nobody to talk to? Well that’s what spo-
ken word is for. Spoken word can be for
storytelling or poems that you can say
in front of an audience. It gives the au-
dience memorable experiences because
they hear your stories and can connect
to whatever process you went through.
There is a Spoken Word program here
at SSICP and it starts every Thursday. In
the program, they teach students to be
confident and learn how to express
themselves without being fearful.
There will be opportunities for the stu-
dents to get more experienced with
their writing skills.
Spoken word is special because it shares
poetic justice, if I told you that a flower
bloomed in a dark room, would you
trust it? I mean write poems in these
songs dedicated to you and you're in
the mood for empathy; there’s blood in
my pen.‖
In the Spoken Word Program, Mentors
tells us that,‖ Poetry is a sign of love,
thoughts, and sometimes even hate. It
provides intelligence in the mind to
come up with different metaphors. It
also involves a lot of images to see be-
yond the eyes.‖ Poetry isn’t just about
saying how you feel but it can also in-
clude art and rap. Rappers like Tupac,
Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and more are
spoken word artists. Poetry is every-

When you think about the Irish you’re
more likely to think about St. Patrick’s

even Ireland, however as stated on

most Irish populated cities in the United

Since the 1870s Chicago has easily ac-
cepted the Irish culture into our big city

has been a landmark to the Irish culture

Initially, we were told we could
not go back in the gym until
everyone had their own lock;
however, classes are back in
the gym and everyone does
not have their own lock. So
what are the risks? If you don’t
have a lock, you need to get

get is a combination lock. Without a

that, but some of the people around
you could steal your things and could

Many myths surround this day,
such as him bringing back the dead,
and him giving a sermon on a hilltop
that drove away every snake in the
country. First off, bringing back the
dead is not possible, and secondly,
there
were
never
any
snakes native to the mother land, so this
myth is easier to believe. In fact, this day
was initially a Catholic day. What do
you know about that?
Many rituals and traditions are
essential for the Irish Culture and holi-
day. They even have a symbol. Its called
a Shamrock. It is also said that the rea-
son for this being the symbol was be-
cause he used them in his sermons to
indicate how God the Son, God the
Father, and God the Holy Spirit could
exist as different elements in one entity.
He also wore them on his feast days.
So before you sit there and put
on you all green and shamrocks, think
about what the day was initially for and
how it should be celebrated. Its not all
about getting drunk and acting a hot
mess, its to celebrate a stranger who
received a message from God, decided
to obey it and converted sinners unto
God. I can sat Amen to that! Knowledge
of the day means to be clovered in luck.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Saint Patrick’s Day, oh what a
lucky day in the month of March. It’s a
lucky day, but do you know what it’s
about, do you know the inspiration
behind it, or the rituals and traditions?
Everyone who doesn’t celebrate it
tends to exhale ignorance on the issue,
such as stereotyping all Irish as being
drunkards, or they all have red hair and
are leprechauns. There is more to Saint
Patrick’s Day than that, as well as there
are to the people who celebrate it.
The inspiration behind the day
is a man named Maewyn. He was born
in Britain. He wasn’t even Irish, can you
believe that? He was born in about 365
AD. Soon after, he was kidnapped by
Irish men to work as a slave. While cap-
tive, he converted to Christianity and
gained the name Patrick. After six years
of captivity, he escaped to Gaul and
studied in the monastery under Bishop
of Auxerre, a German St. During his
twelve years of training, he knew his
calling was to convert Pagan sinners to
Christianity. Once refused the chance to

I find that a lot of times when I
stress out, I tend to get very ill to the
point of it being hazardous to my
health. I have many triggers that can
cause my stress level to rise and my
body to get the worst of its effects. My
biggest trigger that can send me over
the edge is school. The littlest thing
such as getting a poor grade on a quiz,
Teen stress and anxiety is a constant
growing trend. All throughout the
country, teens are experiencing stress,
anxiety, and stress caused by anxiety.
Stress is pressure or tension
exerted on the body and mind. Stress is
caused by a num-
ber of different
factors and can
potentially be fatal
to one’s health.
Teens and stress
go hand and hand, but there are re-
sources and skills that can be practiced
to put you in control of your stress level.
Anyone who experiences
stress knows that stress can be trig-
gered by many different things. Not
doing well in school, social issues, the
preparation for college, being bullied
and even gaining new responsibilities is
more than enough to send teens over
the edge. According to
www.teenhelp.com, ―studies also
test, or any other assignment puts me in
a very uncomfortable place. Almost
immediately after that is the sweating,
being lightheaded, and getting very
sick. To keep myself from stressing out, I
do breathing exercises and mental pep
talks. I try to remain calm and stay posi-
tive.
Though stress is a common
reoccurrence in the lives of teens today,
it is possible to cope with and some-
times get rid of. Sometimes keeping
yourself involved in fun activities can
easily take the mind and the body off
stressing. Relaxation tactics, rehearsing
and practicing scenarios that can cause
stress to better prepare you for it can be
very helpful as well as beneficial. Learn-
ing coping skills, taking a break from
stressful activities, writing, singing or
any other acts can quickly ease the ten-
sion the body and mind feels from
stress.
What’s this about societies? Well the
National Honors Society is a program all
around the world involving many high
school students. It gives those selected
students who are part of that society a
high ranking, which allows them to be
known. Also, it shows that their aca-
demic levels were above and meet col-
lege standards. The South Shore Nation-
al honors society, is directed by Ms. Cur-
tis, who one of the freshman and soph-
omore teachers in the English depart-
ment. She has high standards for all her
students, even those whose grades are
not perfect.
Are some of the requirements for the
honor society a little too much to han-
dle? Some of the requirements state
that the student must have written
peronal essay, get two letters of recom-
mendation (either being having from
math, science, or their English teacher).
Also, those students have to pay a fee
of $20 and have their transcript. Along
with the above needed, the students
had to submit awards for community
service hours served, and extra-
curricular activities they participated in.
The main requirement that is needed is
that those students have a grade point
average of 3.75 or above. Basically they
need to have almost a 4.0 GPA by the
looks of it to even be considered into
the honors society.
Will you try to be part of the society
next year?

In 1169 Irish practiced a religion
known as Celtic Christianity. Irish reli-

people were mad because it was part of
the English culture. During the reign of
King James Catholic schools were

The Fenians were part of a move-

What did Ireland go through in the
past? Ireland is an 89,000 sq. km land of
amazement. There were battles to the
death during the 9th and 10th centu-
ries in Ireland against Vikings, but later
―ran them out.‖ Catholics were accept-
ed in society because of Queen Eliza-
beth so they linked Irish with it. Many
events went on during that time and
changed the way Ireland is today.
Vikings attacked Ireland as early as
795 A.D. They came in warships to take
over but, Irish locals attacked them and
ran away. Ok 17 years, they came back
and took over what is now the Dublin
castle. Vikings were Germans who raid-
ed areas that were wide spread in many
European countries. Also, in 853 Ire-
would save the Irish problem, but it
didn’t, so they thought that the only
way to have a future is if they separated
from Great Britain. Two people name
James Stephens and John O’Mahony
were criminals in Ireland’s eye for com-
mitting crimes for freedom. They es-
caped to America and formed the or-
ganization known as the Fenians.
Ireland is a place where many events
happened. Their history is something
worth learning about. They went had
been through many events that shaped
their culture today. Irish people are in-
teresting to learn about because of their
wars and massive movements.
400 years ago in a village of Ireland, two people met in a pub and married three years later. They started their family and
opened up a small jewelry store. To attest their love for one another they created the Claddagh, which became a part of the
Irish heritage. They made it as distinctive as possible with two hands clasping a heart with a crown above it. They even thought
to make the way you wear the ring, something different and unique. ―The ring worn on the right hand, crown turned inwards,
tells that your heart is yet unoccupied, worn with the crown outwards reveals love is being considered. Worn on the left hand
with the crown turned inwards tells that all your heart belongs to another.‖
The Claddagh ring belongs to a widespread group of rings called ―Fede‖ or faith rings (this loving style originating in
Rome). The two thought to spread their ring (and love) by sending it to Spain where it gained voluminous popularity. The ring
itself will always shine as a symbol of their love for each other.
