FACTORY FARMING HORROR: CHICKEN PRODUCTION

Around 90 million chickens are slaughtered for their meat

each year. The majority of these birds are housed in large,

overcrowded, windowless sheds that each hold as many as

40,000 birds.

Chickens have been selectively bred for fast growth and high

meat production, reaching adult size in just six weeks. Tragically,

due to their unnatural weight gain, ‘meat chickens’ are non-

survivors – even if rescued they usually will not live long due totheir poor genetic makeup.

Chickens bred for their

meat (called ‘broilers’ by

producers) are among

the worst treated animals

in the food industry,

enduring shockingly short

and undeniably cruel lives

- and it’s happening right

here in New Zealand.

SHE CAN’T EVEN

Support HER

OWN WEIGHT

“I stopped eating chicken years

ago when I saw what chickens who

were bred for meat went through,

from their sad beginnings to their

cruel and premature end. Why

would anyone support an industry

that was so cruel to animals?”

UNNATURAL LIVES

Intensively farmed chickens are packed closely together and have

little space to move. Each bird has a oor area less than the size

of an A4 sheet of paper. As the birds grow, conditions deteriorate

and sheds become increasingly overcrowded. The chickens never

get to go outside and experience sunlight or fresh air and are

unable to express natural behaviours, such as perching, foragingand running.

CRIPPLED AND DYING

The chickens’ fast growth leads to

severe stress and pain in their legs

and hips, affecting their ability to walk. Birds severely crippled and

deformed are killed or die of starvation and thirst, unable to reach

food or water. Thirty-eight per cent of chickens in New Zealand

cant even walk normally. By the time they reach slaughter weight,

at just 6 weeks old, they spend most of their time lying down.

Chickens raised for meat also have a high mortality rate compared

to laying hens of the same age. Approximately 10,000 birds die

EVERY DAY in New Zealand’s broiler sheds as a result of heart

failure, disease and afictions caused by the intensive methods of

production and health problems from selective breeding.

THE PARENT BIRDS

Chickens are hatched from eggs laid by parent birds (broiler

breeders). Because of their genetic disposition to put on weight

very quickly, parent birds are fed a very restricted diet

and can suffer severe hunger.

products.

• PLEASE DONATE TODAY

Your contribution is vital to stop

factory farming in New Zealand.

What about free range?

Free range chickens are given

more space but still suffer leg and

health problems due to their poor

genetics.
