SStteeppppiinngg oouutt into downtownChico a sense of history andculture abounds.

From the old brick buildings atCalifornia State University Chico tothe giant hands sculpture near cityhall, the city proudly boasts its her-itage and commitment to the arts.

In fact, Chico was named the No. 10Art Town in America by author JohnVillani in his book The 100 Best ArtTowns in America.

Many of themurals, sculpturesand other pieces ofpublic art werefunded or partiallyfunded by the city.

Back in 1990 thecity committed aportion of its tran-sient occupancy tax(generated throughhotel room fees) tosupporting theChico ArtsProgram.

Today, that pro-gram helps fund notonly public art butalso performance-related arts such asdance, theater and music.

FFoorr tthhoossee iinntteerreesstteedd in checkingout all the art, just keep youreyes open.

There are about 40 different murals

located within the city honoring his-torical figures, events, places andactivities.

Since the city is one of the most pop-ular cycling sites in the state, it’s notsurprising that one of the murals byScott Teeple pays tribute to the “bicy-clist.”

Other murals include one of cityfounders John and Annie Bidwell, another of a crumbling red wall with

ancient Greek columns peeking outunderneath and finally one payingtribute to the fab four, the Beetles.

North Rim Trail: North Rim Trail starts at the Easter Cross(parking area B) off Upper Park Road. Setalong the rocky northern bluffs of UpperBidwell Park, the trail itself lacks soil and isalso rocky.North Rim Trail intersects with the followingmain trails:-Middle Trail near the Easter Cross-Blue Oak trail northwest of Horseshoe Lake-Maidu trail northeast of Horseshoe Lake-Live Oak Trail north of Diversion Dam-B Trail northwest of Brown’s HoleThere are also a number of minor, unnamed trails that it intersects withduring its ascent into Upper Park.

Upper Trail: Northeast of Horseshoe Lake iswhere Upper Trail starts. It begins asan upper fork off of Middle Trail andeventually runs into Upper ParkRoad at Diversion Dam.

Middle Trail: Middle Trail begins near the inter-section of Wildwood Avenue andUpper Park Road (at parking areaA). From the Easter Cross to B Trail(where it ends), it runs parallel toNorth Rim Trail.

Lower Trail: Lower Trail begins on the easternside of parking area E (located atHorseshoe Lake). It spills onto Upper ParkRoad between Day Camp and Bear Hole.

B Trail: B Trail was constructed by a mountain bik-ing enthusiast and has a number of switchbacks. It can be accessed from near theeastern end of North Rim Trail, or from

Upper Park Road west of Brown’s Hole. Yahi Trail: Yahi Trail was constructed in1967 by the Yahi Group of the Sierra Club.It begins just east of Horseshoe Lake (park-ing area E), off of Upper Park Road, andfinishes when it runs into Parking Area U (atthe end of Upper Park Road). A thickcanopy of creek side trees provides ampleshade for much of Yahi Trail. In addition tothe swimming hole parking lots, access to allof the swimming holes can be made via YahiTrail.

Pine Trail: Pine Trail is located directly across from theSantos Ranch Road on Highway 32. Thetrail winds downhill until it intersects withGuardians Trail.

10 Mile House Road: 10 Mile House Road is easily accessed fromHighway 32, between Santos Ranch Road

and La Castana Drive. Many park visitorsrefer to the entrance of 10 Mile House Road(which is actually a service road) as “GreenGate” due to the fact that there is a greengate in place to prevent unauthorized vehi-cles from entering. The road can be used toaccess Guardians Trail, Annie Bidwell Trail, and Big Chico Creek. The road meandersdownhill, then eastbound along Big ChicoCreek until it runs into a gate at the park’snortheastern-most boundary.

Wildwood Trail: Wildwood Trail runs alongSycamore Channel, betweenWildwood Avenue and the northside of the Five-Mile RecreationArea. The trail meanders through awoodland full of Blue Oak andFoothill Pine trees. There are a num-ber of unnamed, minor trails in thevicinity of Wildwood Trail as well.
