President’s Message
Table of Contents
The new ADSA membership has worked
very well and received more new
members than last year. We have hired a
new Sport Coordinator staff, Joanna
Nicholson, starting on September 19th.
She is now preparing the sport activities
at ASD Gym (Monday – Thursday @ 6-9
pm). ASD Gym is still under renovations
and will open by mid-October.
We have attended Canadian Deaf Sports
Association (CDSA) AGM on September
16-17 in Gatineau, Quebec. The CDSA
AGM went very well. We understood
what 2016 was a challenging year for
CDSA in which they had to make
difficult decisions. Throughout the past
12 months, they have tried their best to
evolve as an organization and take
significant strides both internally and
externally and externally within the
sports sector, particularly related to their
identity and the sustainability of their
long-term operations. We congratulate
CDSA for doing wonderful jobs in past
12 months.

2016 Brooker Cup October 2016
Alberta Hang On to Beat British Columbia Alberta Deaf Golf Club hosted 12th Brooker Cup at The Links of Glen Eagles Golf Club, Cochrane on September 24 & 25, 2016. For two days, eight golfers from British Columbia played team match play against eight golfers from Alberta. The first team that earns 12 ½ points claims the Brooker Cup. Team Albert brought the Cup by winning 14 to 10 points. Congratulations to Team Alberta and the Captain, Grant Underschultz. Both teams showed excellent sportsmanship and played competitive golf right to the end. Over the years, Team B.C. has nine titles and Alberta has three titles. B.C. will host 2018 Brooker Cup close to Vancouver area. Thanks to Rob Cundy for organizing the event. Also thanks to ADSA for sponsoring the event.

What are the best experiences have you had at competitions on a national/international
level?
“2015 Canadian Junior Championship was the most memorable as I got interviewed about my
hearing loss and I got to share a little piece of myself and the everyday obstacles I overcome in a
game, and on TSN no less.”
October 2016
Interview with Holly Jamieson
What was the most important lesson that you learned as a player?
I have learned that communication is everything. It's so important to know that
everyone is on the same page and included.
What is your position on the curling team?
Skip for Team Jamieson
What are some of the most important characteristics and skills necessary
for your position on the team?
Leadership and strong clear communication
When you are doing training/conditioning, what does a typical training
session consist of?
I spend at least 3 days a week at the gym, 4-5 days a week during the offseason.
My typical routine in season looks like this: Mondays I focus on conditioning
with intervals or circuits. Tuesday's are primarily strength training, about an
hour completing a workout program. Then Thursdays I complete a full workout
with cardio to start then strength training to end. If I am not competing in an
event/bonspeil on the weekend, I try to still do something active.
What’s the toughest thing about practice?
The toughest thing about practice is staying focused and practicing like you
would play in a game. Treat each shot as important and do the same set up
every time and the same follow through and reflect after every throw.
What is the one thing you do before a game?
Dynamic stretching and pre game meeting.
Who’s the funniest person on the team?
Nyla. She's so sassy on and off the ice. She can always lighten the mood and
joke around.
How did you get started curling and what advice would you have for our
readers who are just getting started?
I started when I was 9 years old and had been watching my parents curl for
several years prior. I strongly encourage anyone, at any ability to try curling by
keeping an open mindset and willingness to keep practicing and building on
your skills. We curl because we love the game and love the people we play
with and compete against. I don't curl because I'm good at it or told to do it. I
play because I love it.

Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club
2016 Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club Alberta School for the Deaf Gymnasium is under renovations and will open by mid-October. Cold weather will be here soon and pickleball players will be using the gym on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. All Pickleball players and new players need to become ADSA members to play. We are looking forward to see many players on the courts. Linda and Rob Cundy participated in C.L.R.C. Invitational Pickleball Tournament on September 27, 2016. There were about 40 pickleball players and Rob & Linda came in second place – silver medals. Hopefully more ADPC members will participate in future pickleball tournaments.
