Chief Okemos Sportsman’s ClubVol. 32 No. 5 May 2019
Welcome to the Mayedition of the COSC newsletter.
A Note from the Club President - Ken Ecker
Hello! It has come to the club’s attention that ranges are being unsafely and terribly misused. Reports include targets and stakes being placed in
front of club’s targets, and riffles being used on the handgun ranges in an unsafe manner (other than sighting in). The club has used funds to improve the grounds and ranges for our enjoyment.
We are having problems with back boards being destroyed unnecessarily. On average these back boards and up rights cost $10 to $20 each to replace. These are funds that are coming out of our dues.
As President, I want to see our club grow and continue to be a safe environment for members including their family members and guests. Remember, we are teaching our children and youth while using our club, ranges, and grounds. This kind of blatant misuse of the club ranges sends the wrong message.
We need active members to start policing our ranges. We have been having several occasions where non-members and former members (who have not paid their dues, sometimes for years) who are continuing to use ranges as if they still are active members. Members should initiate conversation with other persons using the facilities. Ask if they have a current membership card and if they do not, let them know the club ranges are for members only.
Ken
Shooting hours are posted on the Range Board. The stopping of shooting one half-hour before sunset rule MUST be followed.

If you would like to get club work hours in, we are in need of a greeter for the 3D Archery Range. The range is open to the public on Sundays from 9:00am – 2:00pm, starting May 5th thru Sept. 29th. The cost is $10.00 a person, $20.00 for a group of four and $5.00 for additional persons in that group. This open house is a means to invite new archers in and let them see what COSC has to offer. Archery Update
I would like to start by thanking everyone that came out to help set up the 3D archery range. This took us two Saturdays of hard work to get the range ready this year.
There are 6 new 3D targets that were set out to replace older targets. Underneath all the targets are new treated cross support boards and longer rerod for better support. A lot of the targets were moved to different stations to change up the course. Two more back stops were added to the course, giving us 22 targets with backstops. These back stops will help to minimize lost arrows. Some of the old targets are mixed in with the new targets to help make
wildlife scenes, hoping for more exciting 3D experience.
We also replaced 6 new bow racks with a wider base made of treated wood for more
stability. The 4x4 center post should hold up in the field better over the years.
The bag targets on the 20-yard line are being replaced. The big bag targets are crossbow rated. Please let me know if targets are not stopping crossbow bolts. One bag on the far left is a “Youth target”. There are 4 new bow racks across the bag target field that have been replaced and a 3D buck was donated to be enjoyed by all.
The old targets have been put behind the archery shed. Feel free to take these as I will be putting them in the dumpster, a few at a time. The center of the target is a very dense sponge foam that could be used for bow quiver hoods.
A few more arrows were found while setting up the 3D range. I put these arrows in the “lost arrow barrel” located next to the red pay pipe at the beginning of the range.

U.S. Law Shield Seminar
On May 15, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, we have scheduled a seminar to present and answer questions that you may have about the Michigan law on Concealed Carry. All members are welcome to attend.
Camp Dinner Wrap-Up
Thanks to the dedication of many COSC members who donated their time, their baking skills, their wild game, and their possessions for raffles, we had a very successful Camp Dinner....we raised $4,422.44!
Four very generous members donated firearms for our raffles. Bob Stebleton donated a Smith & Wesson M & P Compact which yielded $720 in profit. Duane Whaley donated a .410-45 long colt Judge revolver which brought in $540. Mike Finn donated a Ruger Ranch .223 which yielded $460. Jeff Buchin donated a family heirloom Springfield .58 Black Powder rifle which brought in $140. Three purchased firearms brought in an additional $220.
Chief Okemos Sportsman’s Club P. O. Box 375, Dimondale, Michigan 48821
Gerri McKenzie and her daughter Ashley Wonnacot ran the 50/50 raffle. They collected $1018, half of which went into the club coffers. They also donated several “mint condition” collectibles in Honor/Memory of “Mac” McKenzie, their father and grandfather. Mac was a longtime member who helped with Junior Trap, and the yearly placement of flags at the military graves around the Lansing area.
Many Thanks to our regular and very dedicated staff of volunteers! Sharon Whaley & Penny Batten took care of admissions. Manny & Karen Ibarra took care of the appetizer table. Mark & Holly Richardson, Ralph Batten, Kirk Ginther, Jeane Royale, and Duane Whaley graciously sold raffle tickets for the firearms. Dan Reid took over the position of MC this year and did a terrific job! Our outstanding cooks: Kathy & Bill Graham, Ron Crowe, and Gary Kandler worked for two days on the delicious meal, and Mike, Deb, and Eric Carter took care of the outdoor fish frying again this year.Mike Morey once again was kitchen clean-up and general aid to the cooks. Mark Richardson once again roasted the pork shoulder for us.
Duane Whaley helped me collect business donations this year for the raffles. “Thanks Duane!” Thank You to the wonderful bakers who donated such delicious desserts! Thank You to the members who donated their wild game, and Thanks to all of you who donated prizes for the raffle tables! A “Thank You” to Sandra Enness who posts the Camp Dinner information to the newsletter, the web site, and Facebook to help spread the news of our fundraiser.
You all help to make this event a success! Thanks to the 18 volunteer servers of the dinner, and many thanks to the folks who stayed after to break down the tables & chairs. Thanks to Ron Pioch who came back on Sunday to help clean the floors. This fundraiser is a success because of all of you!
Hope to see you all again next year,
Cathy Finn

COSC Reloading Group
First, Mike Birsen, you were missed helping Mark Richardson, Jeane Royale, Steve McGarry, COSC Archery Group, get 3D Archery Course set up. Thank you Archery Group for keeping Archery alive and well at COSC.
Back to Reloading.... We set up the bench, made coffee and ate donuts that Pat brought! Tom and Grandson Zack arrived to load .44 mag so that’s what we loaded till Martin did our class presentation, “The History of Gunpowder” Ignited, Goes Boom!Martin Bowyer, Chemist & Reloader
... in summation Martin, talked about Chinese to modern day black powders. Early BP and the first cartridges using black powder and first smokeless powders and military primers, all very corrosive to firearms. Powder /Primers became non-corrosive, more consistent burn rates and finally the single and double based powder which we enjoy today. Unfortunately, it was too windy outside to demonstrate the burn rates. Very interesting how our military powder/primers evolved so quickly. Thank you Martin!
At next meeting, I’ve asked Martin to discuss the burn rates developed in smokeless powder/primers used in reloading today. Certainly, best info is to understand the “powder burn rate choices” when choosing powder for cartridges we want to reload. Reloading finished we went to the range shooting 450 Bushmaster, 6.5 Creedmoor, 460 S&W, 9mm and .380 Auto.
Thank goodness Martin downloaded some 460 S&W rounds to 40,000 PSI not the normal maximum 60K PSI. A BIG Handful! The Reloading Group received a donation for the plaque for our Hunter Education Program in COSC Clubroom. Thanks, Reloader! The COSC Hunter Education plaque reads: “Tom Towsley Memorial Hunter Education Program”
Reloading Group next meets on Saturday May 4, 9:30 to 2:00 PM COSC Clubhouse, 2 PM Range Reloading Group is open to all members and friends with Chronograph use available for everyone!

“Red Flag” laws and “extreme risk protection order act” … What you might want to know!!!
At my own expense and time I have prepared information that is either directly or indirectly related to
what is currently referred to as “Red Flag” laws that are now bills before the legislature here in Michigan.
Below are extracts from two of the three bills in the senate, please note that Senate Bill 156 names the bill
package as “extreme risk protect order act”. Also, please note that Senate Bill 156 introduces a term
“Restrained individual” who, within 24 hours after being informed that he/she is now a Restrained
individual, must surrender any firearms he/she might possess.
The bills are available (Senate Bill(s) 156, 157 and 158) on the Legislative website and total 50 pages;
they are tie-barred which means that they all must pass or none passes. As is quite often the case, there are
also three bills in the House dealing with the same subject matter.
SENATE BILL No. 156
Sec. 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the “extreme risk protection order act”.
(i) “Restrained individual” means the individual against whom an extreme risk protection order
has been issued and is in effect.
SENATE BILL No. 157
“An act to regulate and license the selling, purchasing, possessing, and carrying of certain
firearms, gas ejecting devices, and electro-muscular disruption devices; to prohibit the buying,
selling, or carrying of certain firearms, gas ejecting devices, and electro-muscular disruption
devices without a license or other authorization; to provide for the forfeiture of firearms and
electro-muscular disruption devices under certain circumstances; to provide for penalties and
remedies; to provide immunity from civil liability under certain circumstances; to prescribe the
powers and duties of certain state and local agencies; to prohibit certain conduct against
individuals who apply for or receive a license to carry a concealed pistol; to make
appropriations; to prescribe certain conditions for the appropriations; and to repeal all acts and
parts of acts inconsistent with this act,”
What you need to do if you have any interest in the general issue of the Second Amendment and how
these bills might affect this important protection and would like to attend a discussion, you will need to
send an email to [email protected]. Please place “Senate Bills” in the subject matter line and leave
your name in the body of the email; this is for COSC members only.
If sufficient interest is expressed, within two weeks of the publication of this article in the COSC
newsletter, a date/time for the discussion will be set and you will receive notification as to date and time
by way of return email… FYI… a Thursday at 10 a.m. following Weezers and Geezers breakfast is a
prime candidate.
Thank you … John Akley, COSC member
Please consider attending some of the COSC meetings noticed in your newsletter.
