ADORATION

One: Come into the presence of the Most High GodMany: With songs of praise and shouts of thanksgiving.

One: For our Savior frees us from slavery;Many: Our Savior heals our diseases;

One: Our Savior is our peace.Many: You are a holy temple in the Lord Jesus Christ.

All: Come; let us worship God.

Invocation Rev. Laura Stephens-Reed

Hymn of Praise 231 Come, Christians, Join to Sing MADRID(Stanzas 1-2)

Call to Confession Robin Miller

One: Even our best intentions go awry when we are not at one with God’s purpose. Our gracious God journeys with us and provides us with unending mercy, patience, and kindness. Let us confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession

All: Eternal God, your steadfast love endures forever. We confess that we act as if we are in control, as if you will bless whatever we do. If we think of others at all, it is with an eye toward their usefulness to us. If we consider your creation, it is to ponder what benefits us. We have failed to show your love or do justice in obedience to you. Have mercy on us, God of grace. Forgive our sins, we humbly pray. Put the mind of Christ within us, O God. Use us to break

down walls of hostility within the church, among the nations, and around the world. Equip us to do your will, giving you glory, honor, and praise together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

One: Our Lord Jesus gives us rest and peace. Our Master’s touch heals us, and his shed blood is our salvation.

All: In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven.

On heaven’s blissful shore His goodness we’ll adore, Singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!”

PROCLAMATION

Children’s Sermon Holly Hatton

Gospel Reading Luke 15:1-10 Brooke Mathis

(page 905 in the pew Bible)

One: This is the Word of the Lord.Many: Thanks be to God.

Anthem from “The Christian Lyre” There’s a Wilderness in God’s Mercy

Soprano and Alto Ensemble

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, like the wideness of the sea;There’s a kindness in God’s justice which is more than liberty.There is welcome for the sinner, and more graces for the good;There is mercy with the Savior; there is healing in His blood.

But we make God’s love too narrow by false limits of our own;And we magnify God’s strictness with a zeal God will not own;For the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind;

And the heart of the eternal is most wonderfully kind.

Prayer of Preparation Rev. Dr. Randy L. Hyde and CongregationAlmighty God, to You all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

You no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You, and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CHRISTIAN YEARWe find ourselves in the season of the Christian Year known as Ordinary Time. This season of the Christian Year is marked with the color green because it is set aside as a season of growth and transformation. Our ministers’ stoles and runner on the altar table represent life and growth while the candles and Bible remind us of the central role the light of Christ and the Word of God in Scripture play in our transformation during these “Great Green Growing Days.”

WELCOME TO FIRST BAPTISTWe are so glad you decided to worship with us today. Please take a moment to fill out the Visitor’s Card in the pew rack in front of you. You can place these in the offering plate during the offertory. Consider lingering after worship so that our members might have a chance to greet you. Our Interim Pastor and deacons will be in the Welcome Center after worship and would love to meet you.
