CONFIRMATION PROGRAM

Christ Church (Episcopal) seeks a full-time Youth Minister, lay or ordained, to shepherd our youth on their faith journey from 7th - 12th grade and beyond. The Youth Minister will act as a shepherd, guide, teacher, pastor, and healthy adult presence for our youth. Christ Church is a growing, dynamic, mission-focused parish located on the North Shore of Chicago, just steps from Lake Michigan. Most of the youth in our parish attend a large, award winning public high school, New Trier. The offerings there are wide, varied, and deep. This can create a culture where some children are happily meeting the high expectations that are set for them while others struggle with their identities. The resources in this community are plentiful…and for some, they can come with a kind of emotional cost. The ideal candidate will be experienced and be familiar with the dynamics of such a community and understand that the job is not primarily programming activities for our youth. The needs of the youth are the same at their life stage as the needs of the adults: they yearn for someone to communicate the Christian faith in a shepherding way that is centered on the person of Jesus and the work of the Spirit, all under the Father’s care and direction.

YOUTH MINISTRY: WHAT’S NEXT?

“One Adult Making a Difference in the Life of One Youth” (video on YouTube)

Scott’s parents divorce when he’s a junior and he and his mom move to a new state, new church.

One vestry member, Miss Janet, decides to adopt him against his will and hugs him every Sunday, telling him how glad she is to see him and that she’s praying for him. When he tries to escape, she follows him to his car and knocks on the window until he gets out of the car and hugs her.

This goes on for a year when one day Miss Janet isn’t at church; she’s become ill. Scott asks his mom if they can go visit her in the hospital.

When Miss Janet asks for a hug, Scott climbs up on the bed with her and wraps her in a bear hug, asking how she’s doing.

Miss Janet: “I’m a little afraid. Doctors don’t know what’s going on or if I’ll make it out of here.” Scott: “You’re going to be okay, I know it…because I’ve been praying for you almost every

single day for over a year. I’ve been saying to God, ‘The rest of my life is in ruins, but if you take care of this one weird old lady, I know I’m going to be okay…Don’t you know Miss Janet? You are saving my life.’”

Hope: hope is not passive, it’s active. We do hope. When we reach out to the youth in our congregation, we are acting on the hope that all of our

lives will be transformed and that because we are together as the body of Christ, our ministry to our community and the world will be more vibrant and more Spirit-filled than ever before.

There is a place in our youth ministry for you, but you are already part of ministering to youth when you reach out to the those around you during the Peace and let them know how glad you are that they’re there. That you’re praying for them. That you love them. That having them there completes our church family.
