A colourful waddle of penguins is set to take over Christchurch this summer with Wild in Art’s latest and greatest public art trail, Pop Up Penguins.

Pop Up Penguins will be live on our streets and in public spaces for nine weeks from late November. Th e trail will include 50 large penguin sculptures sponsored by companies and decorated by artists, along with 65 little penguins decorated by schools who are participating the Pop Up Penguins Learning Programme. A special Pop Up Penguins app will enable trail followers to track their progress locating each penguin plus unlock rewards from sponsors.

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre is thrilled to be the recipient charity of this fantastic family friendly event. As the only service provider of its kind in New Zealand, Cholmondeley is an invaluable resource in our community and it is a lifeline for over 200 Canterbury families each year.

But our service only exists because of the generosity of our valued and caring supporters.

It costs Cholmondeley Children’s Centre $2.3 million every year to support vulnerable Canterbury children and their families, approximately 80 per cent of this is community funded.

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre Pop Up Penguins

It’s been a tough year for charities like Cholmondeley, and we’re in need of support so that we can continue to offer our service in Canterbury.

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in Governors Bay provides short term and emergency respite care for children aged 3 to 12 years whose families are experiencing stress or crisis. Each child comes to us with their own unique background, but common reasons for a stay include the mental or physical illness of a parent or caregiver, family harm, financial hardship, bereavement, grandparent(s) as primary caregivers, whanau caring for non-biological children.

Our aim is to enhance the wellbeing of these children and build their resilience through the provision of a fun, camp-like respite with 24 hour personalised care and an activities based education programme.

Please consider running a small fundraiser for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre as part of the buzz surrounding Pop Up Penguins.

Whatever you do and however much you raise, your money will help us to support local Canterbury children and their families in genuine need.

The funds you raise will help us provide an average of 4,400 bed night stays, 8,000 hours of residential care and 1,100 nutritious meals each year – plus give countless hugs and positive experiences.

As a charity, our service is only made possible with the support of others. We are extremely grateful for your time and your efforts on our behalf, thank you!

RAISE $150 Will provide sixteen children with nutritious food for one day, including three meals and two snacks.

“I have got myself back to place where I can be a nice Nana. I have been utterly exhausted and have slept so much over the past couple of days. Cholmondeley has made such a huge difference for me.” — Grandparent who is primary carer for grandchildren

RAISE $250 Can provide a group activity outing for sixteen children, this includes transportation and entry fees. Favourite outings include indoor wall climbing, horse riding, gymnastics and trampolining.

“Thank you for all the care and love you showed Owen* on his first stay. Owen has anxiety but wow what a difference we see with him at school. It’s like he has learned to play with kids, is full of confidence and is now taking the lead in play.” — Social Worker*name changed

RAISE $500 Will cover all associated costs for one child to stay at Cholmondeley for one day/night. This includes food, activities, transportation, staff salaries and all hygiene and medical supplies required.

“When I left foster care to come back to Dad things were tricky and Cholmondeley helped me through. Before Cholmondeley I didn’t know adults could like me — I didn’t know adults could be fun! I didn’t know that I am good at Māori art.” — Child, aged 12.

RAISE $1000 Will ensure one marginalised family has ongoing help through our Awhi team whānau support service. This means they will have in home one-on-one support from our registered clinical social worker who will visit and work with them to implement an individualised parenting plan.

“If we didn’t have Cholmondeley we would honestly be lost. They have been a lifesaver for our family and I can’t thank all of the people who make it happen enough.” — Mother

Can you help us make a difference?

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre Pop Up Penguins

Here are ten easy penguin themed fundraising ideas to give you inspiration to support Cholmondeley Children’s Centre during Pop Up Penguins.

Putting the fun in fundraising

PENGUIN PLUNGE

If your school has a school pool hold a polar plunge where students, parents and/or teachers receive sponsorship to take an early morning dip. Costumes encouraged!

TEACHER VS CHILDREN

Hold a special lunchtime penguin themed charity netball or football match. Create penguin and seal facemasks to adorn your two teams, then collect gold coin donations from your audience.

ONE DAY TRAIL CHALLENGE

Select a teacher (or two!) to complete the Pop Up Penguins One Day Trail Challenge to get around as many penguin sculptures on the trail as they can in a single day. Set up a Givealittle page, promote your efforts within your school community, then have your teacher(s) walk, bike, run, scooter or drive around the trail taking a selfies with each penguin as proof!

Featured Fundraiser It’s a wrap!As much as 40% of the ocean is heavily affected by pollution, depleted fisheries and loss of coastal habitats. Why not ask your school community to support the penguins in a meaningful and proactive way with a Honeywrap fundraiser to encourage waist-free lunchboxes!

New Zealand’s original, organic alternative to plastic wrap www.honeywrap.co.nz are beeswax wrap school based fundraiser specialists. They also have a really cool ‘Bird of the Year’ wrap featuring the hoiho yellow-eyed penguin! Not only will this fundraiser support your school values, an important environmental cause AND Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, but $1 from each ‘Bird of the Year’ wrap sold will also go to Forest & Bird - New Zealand’s leading independent conservation organisation.

For more information visit Honeywrap’s website or call Wendy on 021 389937 and mention Pop Up Penguins.

PENGUIN READ-A-THON

How many books can you find where a penguin is a main character? Get family and friends to sponsor students for a Pop Up Penguins reading marathon.

‘TUXEDO’ TUESDAY

Hold a black and white themed school mufti day. Actual tuxedos optional.

FISH BOWL FUNDRAISER

Place a fish bowl in your school office reception area. Encourage students, teachers, parents and visitors to drop off their spare change to fill the bowl as quickly as possible. You could even turn this idea into a competition between classes to see who can fill a fish bowl the fastest.

PENGUIN OLYMPICS

Little penguins need to be fit to survive in the wild! Hold a lunchtime sports challenge with penguin inspired events for a gold coin entry. Have a waddle race around your school oval, an egg and spoon race that mimics penguins taking care of their young and hold an interclass room competition of the game ‘Robin’s (Penguin’s) Nest’.

ICEBERG COIN TRAIL

With chalk draw a penguin themed design outline in your playground and have the children construct a shimmering piece of pavement art with coins they have brought from home.

PENGUIN MOVIE NIGHT

Pick your favourite penguin movie and hold a family night time screening in your school hall charging an admission. Serve fish & chips or penguin themed snacks and run a quick fire penguin quiz with prizes at intermission.
