Measured Drawings

I measured my lantern by taking photographs from a profile, top and section view to capture the transition-ing movement of the object, as it transforms from a 2D flat surface to a 3 dimensional form, which can both alter in height and width. The object’s shape would depend on the multiple cross-section planes; these ultimately determine the object’s final form.

I also experimented with scanning and tracing the lantern in its 2 dimensional form and tried to establish the spacing between the object’s circular wiring, mak-ing up the skeleton of the lantern. These wires are fairly identical, however they vary in diameter which enables the structure to expand evenly and proportionately. The lantern is also hollow in the center providing a more accurate height measurement.

The following images (shown above) depict a section showing how the lantern trans-forms from a flat plane into a 3 dimensional object by expanding the structure. The lantern’s external skin is compressed and almost folded together.

The circumference of the circular wires are placed in chronological order as a gradual increase or de-crease with equal spacing in between each skeletal ring. The front and side elevations would be identi-cal because the object posseses a spherical form, causing it to look uniform from different views.

Digital modelling is becoming more com-monly used within the design industry as it

is one of the key technological innovations which allow designers to grasp the con-cept or idea of a product with the use of

media (Cheng, 2002).

Analysis

The overall concept derived from the paper lantern was the idea of cross-section surfaces expanding from a 2 dimensional to 2 dimension-al object. The mechanism of the lantern may also apply to ideas of skin & bone as well as panel & fold.

Using the body of a human figure, I followed the section profiles repeti-tively like the lantern and I noticed that regardless of changes in the sections’ dimensions, there is always a common center of gravity (as shown in picture above)

The concept behind a lantern is similar to a slinky, where the cross sec-tion profiles can be altered to create both annular as welll as square.
