1 Choosing CIP Codes Decisions about assigning Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes impact funding and other decisions at UNCG. CIP codes are 6-digit numbers associated with fields of study. The first 2 numbers represent the overarching classification, but the full 6-digit code explains the instructional content defined for that programs in that group. It is important to identify the most appropriate CIP code fit for programs and courses so that data about the program and processes related to the program are represented correctly internally and externally. Course CIPs It is important to choose an appropriate CIP code for a course because the course CIP is related to funding. If a course CIP code does not align with a CIP for any approved UNCG program, the course will be funded at the lowest level (Category 1). In general, course CIPs should reflect the program the course is part of. Faculty credentialing is also tied to CIP codes. When faculty are first credentialed to teach a course, the CIP connected to their terminal degree is reconciled with the CIP code of the course. Justifications are required when the two CIP codes are not related. (See UNCG’s Faculty Credentialing Procedures.) Program CIPs UNC General Administration has provided the following information about program CIP codes: All degree programs are categorized individually in the University’s Academic Program Inventory (API) at the six-digit CIP code level. The University of North Carolina uses the most recent edition of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) to classify its programs in the API. The CIP classifies all post- secondary degree programs into major discipline divisions. Discipline divisions are divided further into discipline specialties, which for the most part are represented by six-digit CIP codes. For example, the discipline division Engineering (14) consists of such discipline specialties as General Engineering (14.0101), Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering (14.0201), Architectural Engineering (14.0401), Chemical Engineering (14.0701), and Civil Engineering (14.0801), etc. In proposing a 6-digit CIP code for a new degree program, constituent institutions should ensure that the CIP fits the curriculum content. In cases where no single CIP encompasses the full breadth of a program, and similar programs exist within UNC, a CIP should be selected that is consistent with other existing programs. CIPs should align with the unit offering the degree; for example, a program in Science Education offered in a School of Education would carry an education CIP rather than a science content area CIP. Requests for CIP code changes that result in a move between Instructional Area funding categories will be closely scrutinized.

Choosing CIP Codes Decisions about assigning Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes impact funding and other decisions at UNCG. The CIP classifies all post-secondary degree programs into major discipline divisions. To Find CIP Codes When planning a new program or seeking the definition of a CIP code, the best resource is the full list found on the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) website:

http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/Default.aspx?y=55 You can either browse a full listing of CIP codes (a numerical listing) or search CIP codes (type in search terms). Choose the option in the right menu of the NCES website.

3

Browse all CIP Codes When you click on this option in the right menu, a list of all available classifications is provided. Click on the “+” sign next to the number to expand the listing to include specific classifications, or click on the classification name to be able to view definitions of groups.

You can click on one of the groups to see the Definition at the top. That explanation should provide the information you need to determine what a CIP code represents. (Kim, can you replace this snapshot with one of a 6-digit CIP and put an arrow that points to the definition at the top?)

4

Search CIP Codes When you click on Search CIP Codes, you can have the site search for related CIP codes based on key terms.

There is an Advanced Search that allows you to refine your search.

5

Search results look like this, with the Title & Definition, and the CIP code:

Searching CIP Codes Approved by General Administration You are able to search the website of General Administration to see which CIP code has been approved for each program. It is helpful to know the CIP codes approved for UNCG because funding is connected to the course CIP codes that we report. According to GA, “the [ Student Credit Hour] enrollment change formula groups instruction into four broad instructional areas based on the relative cost of instruction at the discipline level ranging from low to very high. The disciplines (represented as classification of instructional programs or CIP codes developed by the U.S. Department of Education) offered by UNC campuses are assigned into to one of the four areas of instruction based on an analysis of national instructional cost data and are shown in Exhibit 5-1 below.”

Exhibit 5-l Areas of Instruction

Category I CIP Description

09 Communications & Journalism 23 English 27 Mathematics 38 Philosophy & Religion 42 Psychology 43 Corrections & Criminal Justice 45 Social Sciences 54 History 90 Other

Category II 05 Area, Ethnic, Cultural & Gender Studies 13 Education* 16 Foreign Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics 19 Family & Consumer Sciences 24 Liberal Arts & Sciences, Humanities 30 Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies 31 Parks, Recreation, Leisure & Fitness 52 Business, Management, & Marketing

Category III 01 Agriculture 03 Natural Resources & Conservation 04 Architecture 11 Computer & Information Sciences 15 Engineering-related Technologies 25 Library Science 26 Biological Sciences 40 Physical Sciences 44 Public Administration & Services 50 Visual & Performing Arts 51 Health Professions

Category IV 14 Engineering 66 Nursing

When selecting a CIP code for a course, these are important to consider. Note, however, that if UNCG assigns a CIP code to a course but it does not have a program approved with the first 2 digits of the CIP code (e.g. 66 for Nursing), the student credits hours associated with that course are funded at the lowest level, Category I.

Search the GA Academic Program Inventory On the UNC GA website, there is a link to the “Program and Degree Finder” which will enable verification of CIP Codes. Link there directly with this URL: http://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/programs/index.php

Select UNC Greensboro from the “Campus” drop-down menu to see a list of approved programs. Use the other fields to refine your search.

The Title is the approved name for the program. The CIP code listed is the one approved at the time the program was implemented. (CIP codes have been revised over time, so this code may represent the translation from the one originally approved by the Board of Governors.) Help If you need help with CIP codes, you can contact the Office of Assessment and Accreditation or the Office of Institutional Research.
