OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

VOCATION TEAM ESTABLISHED

In order to increase the effectiveness and scope of our vocation program, I have

established a Vocation Team to assist the Vocation Director with the outreach and

contact with potential candidates for entrance into seminary formation. The team will

operate under the auspices of the Vocation Office and consists of priests serving in a

variety of capacities throughout the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, so that each may bring his

own unique gifts to our vocation program. The Vocation Team is headed up by Father

Kyle Schnippel, Director, Vocation Office. Other members of the Vocation Team are:

Father Daniel Schmitmeyer, Northern Region; Father Shawn Landenwitch, Dayton

Region; Father Bill Cross, High Schools and Cincinnati Region; Father Earl Fernandes,

outreach to College Campus Ministries; and Mr. Wayne Topp, Associate Director,

Vocation Office. The Vocation Office will continue to coordinate all programs and

oversee the evaluation of candidates as they enter the application stage. Please keep this

new effort in your prayers as we continue to work to build a culture of vocations within

the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH Pope Benedict XVI will grant Plenary Indulgence during the Year of Faith (October 11,

2012 – November 24, 2013) to those faithful who follow the due norms and undertake the

special prescripts to obtain them.

November 2012 Clergy Communications 3

What is a Plenary Indulgence?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that, “An indulgence is obtained through

the Church, who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ

Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the

merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the

temporal punishments due for their sins. Thus the Church does not want simply to come

to the aid of these Christians, but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and

charity (1478).” It goes on to state that the faithful may obtain indulgences for the

faithful departed so that the “temporal punishments due for their sins may be remitted

(1479).”

What are the due norms and special prescripts?

During the Year of Faith, Plenary Indulgence “may be obtained by all faithful who, truly

penitent, take Sacramental Confession and the Eucharist and pray in accordance with the

intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.”

“(A) Each time they attend at least three sermons during the Holy Missions, or at least

three lessons on the Acts of the Council or the articles of the Catechism of the Catholic

Church, church or any other suitable location.”

“(B) Each time they visit, in the course of a pilgrimage to a papal basilica, a Christian

catacomb, a cathedral church or a holy site designated by the local ordinary for the Year

of Faith…, and there participate in a sacred celebration, or at least remain for a congruous

period of time in prayer and pious meditation, concluding with the recitation of the Our

Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, and invocations to the Blessed

Virgin Mary and, depending on the circumstances, to the Holy Apostles and patron

saints.”

Archbishop Schnurr has designated four churches/holy sites in the Archdiocese

of Cincinnati: The Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains (Cincinnati), St. Helen

Church (Dayton), Holy Angels Church (Sidney), and the Maria Stein Shrine of

the Holy Relics (Maria Stein).

“(C) Each time that, on the days designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith…,

in any sacred place, they participate in a solemn celebration of the Eucharist or the

Liturgy of the Hours, adding thereto the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form.”

Archbishop Schnurr has designated the following days: First Friday/First

Saturday of every month; the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood (June 2,

2013); the Archdiocesan patronal feast days: St. Francis de Sales (January 24),

St. Robert Bellarmine, (September 17), St. Albert the Great (November 15); and

the Archdiocesan celebrations of the Year of Faith (September 29, 2013 at

Cintas Center and October 6, 2013 at the University of Dayton Arena at 7:00

p.m.).

November 2012 Clergy Communications 4

“(D) On any day they choose, during the Year of Faith, if they make a pious visit to the

baptistery, or other place in which they received the Sacrament of Baptism, and there

renew their baptismal promises in any legitimate form.”

TRANSFER OF VIRTUS® REGISTRATIONS FROM OTHER DIOCESES

As we implement VIRTUS® in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, we have established the

following policy on “transfers” of VIRTUS® Registrations from other dioceses into the

Archdiocese of Cincinnati. That policy is as follows:

Any person who wants to transfer from another diocese into the Archdiocese of Cincinnati must

meet two conditions: (i) the person must have attended a VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session

less than two years ago, and (ii) the person wishing to transfer his / her certification must be

current on reading all VIRTUS® monthly Bulletins. Only then can that person’s VIRTUS®

Registration transfer from his / her previous diocese to Cincinnati.

REQUIREMENT TO BE TRAINED / RETRAINED

Everyone in the Archdiocese is now required to be trained / re-trained using VIRTUS®

regardless of when any such persons were previously trained using our former training

materials. The deadline for completing all VIRTUS® re-training is June 30, 2014. To

register for a VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session, please go to www.virtus.org and choose the

yellow “Registration” link in the left hand column. Then choose “Register for a Session” and

pick Cincinnati (Archdiocese of Cincinnati) from the drop down box. The rest of the registration

instructions will prompt you to set up a user name and password and ask some other questions.

You can sign up for any one of the many VIRTUS® Child Awareness Sessions from among the

list of Sessions currently scheduled all across the Archdiocese.

VOCATION OFFICE

ORDINATION DATES FOR 2013 Next year’s ordination dates are April 27, 2013, for Permanent and Transitional Deacons at Our

Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Dayton, and May 18, 2013, for Priests at St. Peter

in Chains Cathedral. Please mark your calendars now.

ANDREW DINNERS – FALL 2012 One Andrew Dinner remains for this fall:

November 28, St. James the Greater Church, White Oak, Cincinnati

The schedule for the evening remains the same: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:00,

Presentation on the Priesthood at 6:45, Evening Prayer at 7:30, and Departure at 8:00 p.m. These

dinners are a success because of the priests who invite young men from their parishes and/or

school assignments to attend with them. Please consider inviting those young men whom you

consider to have the traits necessary for the priesthood to attend a local dinner with you. As you

make that invitation, it is most successful if you are able to name why you believe he has what it

takes to be a priest in today’s world. Please call the Vocation Office (513.421.3131x2890) to let

us know how many you are bringing from your parish at least a week in advance.

A special note of thanks to St. Paul Parish, Yellow Springs,

and St. Remy Parish, Russia, for hosting the previous dinners this fall.

VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK 2013 With the upcoming Year for Faith, we are busy putting the final touches on this year’s packet for

Vocation Awareness Week, running from January 13 - 19, 2013. We have chosen the theme of

Faith to guide our reflections to coincide with the Year for Faith. The materials for VAW are

published here, please distribute them widely! http://www.cincinnativocations.org/additional-

resources/vocation-awareness-week/.

POSTER FOR WOMEN IN FORMATION

FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CINCINNATI

Since the early 2000's, we have published a poster of those in formation for the priesthood for

the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. There has been growing interest in providing a similar poster for

men and women, from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, who are in religious formation. If there is a

son or daughter from your parish who is in religious formation, could you please forward their

information and picture, if available, to the vocation office at [email protected].

401(K) TREATMENT OF WELLNESS INCENTIVES AND HOLIDAY GIFTS

Employees are eligible to receive incentive payments for participating in the wellness programs

offered each year. Any employee who completes the Biometric Screening will receive $50 and

any employee who completes the Health Risk Assessment (HRA) will receive $50. While these

payments are reportable as compensation on each employee’s Form W-2, the payments are not

considered eligible compensation for purposes of the 401(k) Plan. Therefore, an employee’s

deferral election in the 401(k) Plan does not apply to these wellness payments and no amounts

should be withheld from the wellness incentive payments as 401(k) deferrals. Also, these

wellness incentive payments should be excluded from an employee’s compensation when

calculating the 4% employer contribution to the 401(k) Plan.

Similarly, any holiday gifts or holiday bonuses paid to employees are not compensation for

purposes of the 401(k) Plan. No amounts should be withheld as 401(k) deferrals from these

holiday gifts or bonuses and these amounts should not be included in an employee’s

compensation when calculating the 4% employer contribution.

Regular bonuses paid to an employee are compensation for purposes of the 401(k) Plan and

should be included in an employee’s compensation for purposes of 401(k) deferrals and the 4%

employer contribution.

Please ensure that you are properly coding these wellness incentive payments and holiday

gifts/bonuses when you submit your location’s payroll so that they are treated properly for

purposes of the 401(k) Plan. Wellness codes for Paycor are: Bio Screen and HRA. Contact

Annie Zoz [email protected] with questions regarding the payroll set-up. Contact

Barb Walsh at 513.421.3131x6603 if you have any concerns or questions regarding the treatment

of this compensation.

HEALTH CARE PLAN PREMIUMS FOR FISCAL YEAR 2013-2014 On October 16, 2012 the Healthcare Advisory Committee met to review Healthcare Plan results

for the past fiscal year and to plan for the future. The Plan consultants presented the Committee

with updates on the Healthcare Reforms that will affect the Plan. Also discussed were Wellness

Initiatives, financial results from the prior fiscal year, premium rates and medical inflation costs

and projections, benchmarking data for the Plan relating to deductibles and premium

contributions. After consideration of the financial information, the Committee voted to make the

November 2012 Clergy Communications 8

following recommendations for plan year 2013-2014 which were accepted by Archbishop

Schnurr:

1. A 5% increase to the monthly premium rates, from $592.00 to $621.00 for single

coverage, from $1,376.00 to $1,444.00 for family coverage, and from $270.00 to

$283.50 for retiree coverage.

2. Monthly employee health care contributions will increase to $31.00 for single

coverage and $72.00 for family coverage to begin July 1, 2013.

3. The Open Enrollment communications in March 2013 will reflect other moderate

Plan changes in preventative health services, deductibles and copayments. The 5% premium increase is possible because of the past positive financial results and

anticipated savings from new initiatives which kept us from raising the premiums by the

projected 10.5% inflation costs.

MISSION OFFICE

THANKS FOR QUICKLY SENDING IN YOUR COLLECTIONS

FROM MISSION SUNDAY AND MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN (MCP)

Fellow Catholics in our 1,150 mission dioceses are MOST GRATEFUL to your parishioners for

donating to the recent Mission Sunday appeal for the Papal Society for the Propagation of the

Faith. Likewise, the various religious and lay missionary organizations deeply appreciate the

sacrifices that the members of your church(es) gave to them through our 2012 Missionary

Cooperation Plan (MCP). The Mission Office now urges your parish office to mail in both your

Mission Sunday and MCP collections ASAP. You may mail them together to the Mission

Office but please carefully indicate the amount for each of those collections. Please address

them to the Mission Office and mail directly to 100 East 8th

St., Cincinnati, OH, 45202 to be

properly recorded for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (SPOF). Please also mail us

your parishioners’ Mission Sunday envelopes. It will save all of us time and confusion if you

mail in the 2012 MCP collection now since the MCP 2013 cycle will be starting soon. For

recording and security reasons, please do not give MCP collection to your mission guest speaker

nor mail your MCP collection to the mission organization, diocese or religious congregation.

Send all donations to the Cincinnati Archdiocese Mission Office. If you are in doubt about your

2011 parish donations, please check the October 2012 issue of the Catholic Telegraph that lists

donations sent to the Mission Office.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR MISSION CHURCH!

WORSHIP OFFICE

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

In 2012, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Saturday. Because it is the

patronal feast for the United States, this is always a holyday of obligation. The obligation may

be fulfilled by participating in a vigil Mass Friday evening, December 7 or Mass during the day

on Saturday morning. The Saturday evening Mass should be celebrated as the Vigil Mass for the

Second Sunday of Advent because it holds higher rank than the Solemnity.

TROPES FOR THE LAMB OF GOD

Recently, the Holy See answered a request from the USCCB to continue the custom of using

other Christological invocations for the Lamb of God such as “Bread of Life” or “Prince of

Peace.” Permission to use tropes other than “Lamb of God” was not granted by the Holy See.

Therefore, the words, “Lamb of God” are to be used throughout the singing of the litany. Sing to

the Lord, the most recent UCSSB document on music in Catholic worship will be revised to

reflect this recent development.

RITE OF ELECTION AND CALL TO CONTINUING CONVERSION

This year the Rite of Election takes place earlier than usual; thus, parishes will need to keep in

mind that discernment for the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion should begin

as early as mid-December through early January. The reservation and information forms for the

Rite of Election will be posted on the Worship Office and OEC web sites on January 2, 2013.

OCTOBER, 2012 UPDATE: ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH ATHLETICS INITIATIVE The Archdiocesan Youth Athletics Task Force will be extending its work until May, 2013, since

a November deadline has proven to be unrealistic. Task Force meetings will continue on a

bimonthly basis, on Saturday mornings at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Monroe: November 3,

January 12, March 16 and on a Saturday in May (TBA). Normally meetings are 9:00 a.m. –

12:00 (noon), but on November 3 the general meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m., so as to

accommodate subcommittees which will begin meeting at 8:30 a m. All meetings of the Task

Force are open to the public, and limited time for visitors/observers to address the Task Force is

available at every meeting. More information about the work of the Task Force is available on

the Archdiocesan website here: http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/ayatf/, and the Youth

Athletics Initiative is also accessible via Facebook. Any questions or concerns may be directed to

Dr. Sean Reynolds, Director, Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, 513.421.3131.x2740, or

Archdiocesan policy, teams must utilize Archdiocesan permission/medical information/release

forms, which can be accessed here: http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/youth-

ministry/legal/permission-and-release-form/. Any questions or concerns can be directed to

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT COLLECTION

Appeal Weekend: November 10-11 Collection Weekend: November 17-18 As America struggles to climb out of the Recession, one effort that continues to make a concrete

difference is the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In his letter of encouragement for

the annual collection this year, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr explains that “CCHD is one of the

most successful ways that the Catholic community can stand in solidarity with those trying to

break the cycle of poverty.” How? In the last year, our contributions to the collection helped to

fund local organizations that provided 384 low-income people with job skills, college access

courses, and resources for starting new businesses. Together, they created job opportunities for

Ohio’s 1.9 million citizens who have reentered society from prison, won back $85,500 in

wrongfully withheld wages, and helped 124 people receive their GED… to name just a few

accomplishments! I hope that you are encouraged by such concrete results and that you find

opportunities to urge your parishioners to continue to support CCHD. As Archbishop Schnurr

notes, “It is an investment in the path to more decent jobs and in the human dignity of the

workers and families that they support.” Both nationally and locally designed materials for the

upcoming collection have been mailed out to all parishes. Many of these resources can be found

on the Catholic Social Action Office’s website (www.CatholicCincinnati.org/SocialAction),

including the letter of support from Archbishop Schnurr, a list of what funded agencies

accomplished during the 2011-12 grant cycle, a list of current grantees, and more. Additional

information can also be found at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops site:

http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/. As a reminder, two-

thirds of the funds from the collection will be combined with the funds from the collections

across the nation for distribution to organizations around the country, including in our own

Archdiocese. The remaining one-third will be reserved for allocation by the Archdiocesan

CCHD Committee. A small portion supports the Black and Indian Mission Fund, poverty

awareness education, and administrative processing of these funds. As always, if you have any

questions or concerns about CCHD or any of the funded groups active in our Archdiocese, please

November 2012 Clergy Communications 16

do not hesitate to contact me. Please also note that it is archdiocesan policy that the entire

weekend collection be designated for CCHD.

Thank you again for promoting the collection again this year and for your generous support!

DEPARTMENT OF STEWARDSHIP

2013 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL WORKSHOPS

There will be significant changes to the CMA in 2013. It is important that pastors, parochial

vicars, all other priest celebrants, deacons, business managers, and designated CMA staff and

volunteers join Archbishop Schnurr and Bishop Binzer at one of eight CMA workshops

scheduled below in order to conduct the appeal in your parish:

Northern Region/North Dayton, Tuesday, December 4

9:30 – 11:30 a.m., St. Peter Church, Huber Heights, Fr. Ries Conference Center

1:30 – 3:30 p.m., St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Gaspar Room

Dayton Area, Wednesday, December 5

9:30 – 11:30 a.m., St. Luke Church, Beavercreek, Kramer Hall

1:30 – 3:30 p.m., St. Henry Church, Dayton, Fr. Mierenfeld Parish Activity Center

Cincinnati (West Side), Thursday, December 6

9:30 – 11:30 a.m., St. John the Baptist Church, Dry Ridge, Church Narthex

1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Our Lady of the Visitation Church, Parish Pavilion Building

Cincinnati (East Side), Friday, December 7

9:30 – 11:30 a.m., Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Anderson Township

East West Heritage Room in school

1:30 – 3:30 p.m., St. Columban Church, Loveland, Parish Hall (under church)

New training at these workshops will focus on these important changes:

1. A new emphasis on in-pew solicitation. With the increasing busy-ness of everyday life,

many people miss the message of CMA, even if they have consistently contributed to it in

the past. Relying primarily on mailed solicitations has resulted in a declining number of

households participating in CMA each year. Many other dioceses have had very good

success with a deliberate in-pew solicitation, so that will become a key component for us

next year (in addition to the mailings), in order to increase participation.

2. An increase of our goal from $4 million to $5 million. The success of the CMA has

direct bearing on our ability to deliver effective ministry to hundreds of thousands of

people throughout our 19 counties. An increase in our goal also provides an opportunity

to expand the impact of the Appeal to an additional specific ministry: New

Evangelization initiatives that “go and make disciples” as we are called to do.

November 2012 Clergy Communications 18

3. The parish’s share in the success. Parishes will be able to designate a parish ministry to

receive half of the donations collected in excess of the parish’s goal.

Periodic email updates with important information about the CMA will be sent to all pastors.

Parish staff and parish volunteers interested in receiving email notifications can contact Michael

Vanderburgh at [email protected] to be added to the distribution list.

CHANGES TO PARISH MAILING LISTS

It is never too late or too early to send in changes, additions, and deletions! Please send them,

when they occur to [email protected] or to Carolyn Drew at

[email protected]. Thank you!

CATHOLICS COME HOME SPECIAL COLLECTION

Thank you for completing the special collection at your parish for the CCH evangelization

initiative. The TV commercials will air December 14 – January 20. Any additional gifts

received may be sent to Catholics Come Home, P.O. Box 14150, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0150.

As of October 23, 2012, nearly $220,000 has been pledged! The financial support collected will

be used to purchase the airtime for running the TV spots. Thank you again for your participation

and prayers for welcoming inactive Catholics back to our parishes.

PLANNED GIVING

We are excited to expand our new planned giving information service for individuals who want

to include any Catholic parish, institution or program in their will, trust, or lifetime income plans.

Please see the suggested bulletin announcement supplement to this issue of Clergy

Communications. Michael Vanderburgh will personally assist prospective donors with locating

the information they and their advisors need, and will work with pastors, parish staff, and

volunteers to ensure that all appropriate options for planning are available. Visit

CatholicPlanning.info for more information, or contact Michael Vanderburgh.
