EPIPHANY - Fr. Terry Walsh

“Today the Bridegroom claims his bride, the Church, since Christ has washed her sins away in Jordan’s waters; the Magi hasten with their gifts to the royal wedding; and the wedding guests rejoice, for Christ has changed water into wine, alleluia.” – Antiphon for Canticle of Zechariah, the Epiphany Imagine what it would it have been like to have had a front row seat at the Creation of the Universe? Imagine the sheer joy filling the face of God; joy exploding from within the Trinity at each glorious burst of creation: Fiat! Let there be Light! Oh, the ooohs and ahhhs at the end of each day. Imagine the approving smile, the utter happiness and pure delight. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:1-4). Out of sheer love, God created all things out of nothing. And even after the Fall, God rescued man from ‘the pit of destruction’ through the light of grace. As St. Paul put it: “He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13). We receive that gift of light through a process of Conversion, responding to His invitation to share in His love. St. John explains that Jesus, the Word, is Light – He is love. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:1-5). Light brings warmth and peace. We have a natural inclination toward it. Darkness, on the other hand, threatens us, leaving a cold and murky feeling. Darkness causes us to stumble and fall away, even to the exclusion of fulfilling our true end, union with God in eternal ‘Light, Happiness, and Peace.’ The Epiphany bursts through ignorance and doubt and opens the door of hope. The Light of Truth attracts us to all that is good and pure and beautiful and enables us to ‘walk through the dark valley,’ unafraid, as it were. And yet, just like Adam, our weak human nature is vulnerable to deception, vulnerable to darkness pretending to be light. How is it that we have allowed darkness to overshadow the Light and so draw many souls away from the Truth? How could any reasonable person, for instance, argue that abortion is good? Just as Adam’s eyes were darkened by the film of pride, so too are the eyes of those who oppose the Light of Truth. Adam preferred a shiny apple more than he desired the light of grace. Consequently, he led mankind into the desert of darkness. Yet, throughout time, man persisted in his search for light. Consider Socrates and Plato. Imagine the joy they would have experienced had they had the opportunity to encounter Jesus and so discover that the Truth they so desperately sought to understand was actually not a thing to be sought but rather a Person to be loved and adored. And if they lived in our day, knowing the Truth, would they not be amazed at the utter neglect of the Light? Would they not marvel that so many walk right by Him in our world today, preferring the darkness, drinking a different sort of hemlock of the soul - willful ignorance? We have many shiny apples before us. We don’t even have to go pick them. They come to us every day through the media, through conversations, through a willingness to “call evil, good” so that we may do as we please. Jesus came to heal us of the darkness of our concupiscent tendencies: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. But we have to want to be healed; we have to want to be filled with the light. St. Paul exhorts us: “Let us cast off deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13: 11-12). Jesus is the Light. This celebration of hope brings great joy to all humanity. Imagine what it meant to Jesus, whose boundless love obliterates the darkness and fills those who seek him with the light of truth. But would he find willing vessels? Like St. Paul, who encountered our Risen Lord on the road to Damascus, we too fall prostrate before him in our daily prayer and our willingness to shoulder the Cross. He will lean down to lift us up into the Light. Faithful daily prayer draws in the Light and opens the soul to a greater capacity to bask in the Light. Consequently, we are able to act with greater love and so draw others into the Mystical Body of Christ. Our spiritual vision becomes clear and we gain the grace of strength to remain in the light; that is, to tear away the glitzy disguise covering the face of darkness, which only pretends to be light. Jesus warns us how great the darkness will be for those who choose it. He calls us out of that terrible existence through humble obedience, which he demonstrated through his own perfect sacrifice. “Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light” (Luke 11: 34). “I am the Light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
