Dear Fellow Parishioners, I was in Ireland when the balcony collapse tragedy oc-
curred in Berkeley. Since Irish citizens were involved, there
was huge coverage in Ireland in both Press and TV. Our own Fr. Aidan McAleenan got extensive mentions and that
was well deserved. His compassion and practical assistance
were singled out for praise. One writer in the Irish Times, Kathy Sheridan, reflected
on the fact that even Baptized Catholics, but now non-church goers, like her-
self, found consolation in the ancient rituals of our Catholic church. I quote her, speaking about one of the funerals that she attended in Dublin. “We were
here, non-believers and others, in a church, dabbing away tears, finding re-
lease in the heartfelt prayers of students, in the stirring Irish laments on cello and piano, in a gloriously sung, ‘Pie Jesu’ and the beautiful old Celtic bless-
ing: Deep peace of the gentle night to you/Moon and stars pour out their heal-
ing light on you…. Deep peace of Christ to you.” Last week it seemed the most natural thing in the world to hear a County Down priest (Fr. Aidan
McAleenan) become a voice for broken families. Hour upon heartsick hour,
we heard of Masses, vigils, prayer services and tree-planting in church grounds, all attended by vast numbers of young people finding solace, con-
nection and meaning in old rituals.
Question for us here at Christ the King - What do our Sacramental Rituals mean for us at the deepest level of reflection and daily practice?

Reflections on Sunday
Readings:
First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6 The Kingdom of Judah had a royal lineage that lasted from the time of David in the 10th century B.C. to the Babylonian exile - about 500 years. The last kings in this line were not good ones, and it was during that time that the prophet Jeremiah preached. Christians have seen Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecy in today’s reading.
Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-
18 We continue today our readings from the letter to the Ephesians. Ephesus was a community in which Jewish and Gentile Christians lived side by side. The author, a Christian who was of Jewish background, is addressing Gentile Christians, con-
verts from paganism. The references to “one new person” and “one body” refer to the Church, which is the body of Christ.

A greener approach to giving: Churches, because of their heavy
weekly check volumes, were among
the earliest groups to embrace elec-tronic giving as a way to automate
contributions. Today, electronic giv-
ing in all its forms provides conven-ience for frequent check writers and
donation consistency for churches.
A less frequently discussed benefit of electronic giving is its positive im-
pact on the environment. An enor-
mous amount of natural resources are consumed in the production, trans-
portation, processing and disposal of
paper checks. That's why paying bills electronically always ranks high
on any list of actions an individual
can take to improve the environment. This trend has already produced
more than a 50% decline in check
use since the year 2000. As you con-sider the payment method you use to
make your regular offering, we hope
you will think about the unique con-nection between financial steward-
ship and environmental stewardship.
You can set-up online giving directly by going to www.ctkph.org/Giving.
If you want CTK to set this up for
you authorization forms and addi-tional information are available from
the church office. Contact Robin
Morley at [email protected] or call 925-682-2486.
A great time was had by all at Pleasant Hill’s Annual Fourth of July Parade! Thank you to all our parishioners
who marched with us and those that provided cars and
decorations!
