CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT 10:30 a.m. December 23, 2018

ELW Setting 1 PRELUDE “Medley – Joseph Dearest, Carol of the Belles” by Aaron Shows & John Turner CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

En el nombre del Padre, y del ☩ Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo.

Amén

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the

☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY O Lord, our God, you break into our world with messages of comfort, peace, and joy.

LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH A Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe.

You call all nations to walk in your light and to seek your ways of justice and peace, for the night is past, and the dawn of your coming is near. Bless us as we light the fourth candle of this wreath. Rouse us from sleep, that we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes and welcome him into our hearts and homes, for he is our light and our salvation.

Blessed be God forever. C Amen.

READINGS FROM HOLY SCRIPTURE (Texts are from “The Message” Translation)

FIRST READING Isaiah 7:10-14 10-11 God spoke again to Ahaz. This time he said, “Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!” 12 But Ahaz said, “I’d never do that. I’d never make demands like that on God!” 13-17 So Isaiah told him, “Then listen to this, government of David! It’s bad enough that you make people tired with your pious, timid hypocrisies, but now you’re making God tired. So the Master is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: A girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She’ll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us). Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

PSALM Hymn (ELW No. 251)

SECOND READING Galatians 4:4-7 4-7 But when the time arrived that was set by God the Father, God sent his Son, born among us of a woman, born under the conditions of the law so that he might redeem those of us who have been kidnapped by the law. Thus we have been set free to experience our rightful heritage. You can tell for sure that you are now fully adopted as his own children because God sent the Spirit of his Son into our lives crying out, “Papa! Father!” Doesn’t that privilege of intimate conversation with God make it plain that you are not a slave, but a child? And if you are a child, you’re also an heir, with complete access to the inheritance. Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (ELW s103) Sung by congregation

P El Santo Evangelio según Lucas, capítulo dos.

P The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the 2nd chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. (¡Gloria a ti, oh Señor!) HOLY GOSPEL Luke 2:1-20 1-5 About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant.

6-7 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel. 8-12 There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” 13-14 At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

15-18 As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed. 19-20 Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told!

APOSTLES’ CREED With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A As we await the coming of Christ, we pray in hope for the church, the world, and all of creation. A brief silence. A Faithful Lord, you keep your promises. Move your church to sing like Mary and rejoice like

Elizabeth. Teach us to sing of your faithfulness all our days. Hear us, O God. C Your mercy is great. A Ancient of Days, with joy you danced over the waters and birthed creation. Give us joy in

caring for the soil beneath us, the water around us, and the sky above us. Hear us, O God. C Your mercy is great. A Prince of peace, your sacrifice gives abundant life to all. Raise up leaders in every nation

whose goals are health and well-being for all people and creation. Grant them wisdom and compassion to serve as you would have them serve. Hear us, O God.

C Your mercy is great. A Good Shepherd, you feed your flock. Fill the hungry with good things. Lift up the lowly.

Accompany the refugee. Comfort the lonely. Heal the sick, especially those on our prayer list (see back page). Send us in haste to surround them with your love. Hear us, O God.

C Your mercy is great.

A Love Incarnate, you are with us at the manger, on the cross, and on the resurrection road. Walk with all who live with depression, grief, or heartache in this season. Hear us, O God.

C Your mercy is great. For what else do the people of God pray… A Ever-living God, you are Alpha and Omega. We thank you for all who sing now in the heavenly

choir, especially those dear to us. Join our voices with theirs in praise of the Christ child. Hear us, O God.

C Your mercy is great. P Confident that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, we bring to you these prayers and those

unspoken, in the name of Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen.
