Matthew Crane AD ORIENTEM - INOPPORTUNE In the middle of the 19th Century, as the issue of Papal Infallibility was being debated across Europe and the First Vatican Council, the Council that would ultimately define it, was taking shape, Blessed John Henry Newman was asked what he thought about this doctrine that the pope could not err. Newman stated that based on the scriptures, the witness of the Fathers, the tradition of the Church, and his own prayer and discernment, he thought it was true - the pope enjoyed a gift from the Holy Spirit such that he could not be wrong when teaching faith and morals. That said, Newman thought it was a bad time to bring it up. Europe in the 19th Century was shaken by several minor revolutions, trying to sort the good and bad trends stemming from the Enlightenment, and generally unsure if the Church was a superstitious leftover from the Middle Ages or the basis for all of Western Civilization. In such an environment, a bold claim to supernatural perfection would at best stir the pot and at worst bring down frantic retribution. In short, Newman felt that proclaiming Papal Infallibility was “inopportune.” Analogously, Bishop Kettler has been in touch and expressed his desire that ad orientem celebration not take place in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Obedient to the bishop, I will not be introducing ad orientem this Advent as previously announced. As pastor of the diocese, Bishop Kettler has determined it would be inopportune. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Matthew Crane

AD ORIENTEM - INOPPORTUNE

In the middle of the 19th Century, as the issue of Papal Infallibility was being debated across Europe and the First Vatican Council, the Council that would ultimately define it, was taking shape, Blessed John Henry Newman was asked what he thought about this doctrine that the pope could not err.

In short, Newman felt that proclaiming Papal Infallibility was “inopportune.”

Analogously, Bishop Kettler has been in touch and expressed his desire that ad orientem celebration not take place in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Obedient to the bishop, I will not be introducing ad orientem this Advent as previously announced. As pastor of the diocese, Bishop Kettler has determined it would be inopportune.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Matthew Crane
