THE GIFT OF MERCY Today we mark the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. On this day, we read of the resurrection appearance in the 20th Chapter of St. John’s Gospel: Jesus appears where the disciples are gathered and confers on them the great gift of mercy. Breathing on the apostles, he says “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” We have come to understand this moment as fundamental to the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In almost six years as a priest, and even long before, I have noticed a discomfort with the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a kind of Catholic cliché. Many an amateur theologian has asked me, “If I simply ask God for mercy, wouldn’t a loving God answer that prayer?” Yes, of course he would. In fact, in his eternal providence he already has. For he breathed on the apostles and said: “Whose sins you forgive, are forgiven them.” And the apostles ordained bishops, and the bishops ordained priests, and the priests have been sent out across the world to hear your confessions and absolve you of your sins. Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Matthew Crane
