Many an amateur theologian has asked me, “If I simply ask God for mercy, wouldn’t a loving God answer that prayer?” Yes, of course he would. In fact, in his eternal providence he already has. For he breathed on the apostles and said: “Whose sins you forgive, are forgiven them.” And the apostles ordained bishops, and the bishops ordained priests, and the priests have been sent out across the world to hear your confessions and absolve you of your sins.
