History of Christmas

Christmas is an annual holidaycelebrated on December 25 that, it is

dateof the birth of Jesus of Nazareth .Inhis honor, special service is held. In 354,the Christmas as a Christian holiday,was officially recognized by PopeLiberius . 

In the Czech Republic is the most important holiday of Christmas -Christmas Day 24 December, the ChristmasEve is the end of time of Advent.Christmas is animportant holiday for non-Christians.They visit theirrelatives.Christmas is celebrated 24, 25 and 26December, but preceded them in the Christian concept of the four-week period called Advent.

On Christmas Eve the whole family meets thedinner.The Dinner is traditionally consisted of fish soup, potato salad with carp.FromChristmas Eve dinner is only allowed to moveaway housekeeper. After dinner is customary

unwrap Christmas gifts to children in the Czechlands brings Jesus. Christmas Eve midnightmass peaks, which are beginning to sing carols. Christmas Eve is associated with a number of folk customs: Casting lead, letting the nut boat,throwing a shoe.

Chritsmas TreeChristmas tree came to us from Germany in the 19th century. Onvillages Christmas tree hung with the tip down. The tree adornedwith red apples, nuts, ornaments of straw or candy.In the 20th

century began to dominate the glass ornaments. The mostwidespread is probably spruce, but also popular are pines and firs.

MistletoePeople give mistletoe above the door or chandeliers. Under the mistletoe, man canto kiss any woman. Donated mistletoe wear lucky and for this it people give it totheir friends.

CarpIn most households had carp and potato salat. Under the plate is given scalesfrom carp for good luck and money, or the scales can into the wallets.

 JesusIn the Czech Republic, it is believed that Jesus gives gifts and puts themunder the Christmas tree. Children write a wishlist to Jesus a few daysbefore Christmas Eve. 

Slicing applesAfter Christmas Eve dinner people slice apples.A five-pointed "star" insideof the apple symbolizes health and good luck for next year.If the pips arearranged in the shape of a cross, it symbolizes death.

Christmas Day

Christmas Eve is full of traditions. Firsrtly, youhave to hold a fast if you want to see a golden pig. To hold a fast, means that we can´t eat any meat

and sweets. After lunch we always go to ourrelatives for a visit. At five o ´clock comes themain event of Christmas Eve-the dinner. Thedinner consites of different courses such as

soup,fried carp with potato salad and dessert.After the meal someone rings a bell and we go tothe living room because we know that we will find

a gifts under the Xmas tree.
