WELCOME

Christmas, more than any other Western holiday, has become for almost all of us a time to celebrate and an opportunity to rejoice. For centuries, Christmas has been the inspiration for a wealth of musical composition, vocal and instrumental, sacred and secular. This spirit of Christmas is reflected in the festive quality of music-making synonymous with celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is in this spirit we offer Christmas at the Orpheum, a program of uplifting seasonal music performed by hundreds of the Siouxland Community’s finest musicians.

Led by the distinguished talents of the Briar Cliff University Singers and Members of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, tonight’s program features the angelic tones of soprano soloist Shannon Salyards, the talents of Jeremy Owens showcased on The Mighty Wurlitzer, and two additional organizations with close ties to our Siouxland community – the Siouxland Choral Artists and Western Iowa Tech Community College Concert Choir. Many hours of musical and logistical preparations have ensued to offer tonight’s ecumenical program which is designed especially for you, our audience.

The theme of tonight’s program, Behold, the Joyful Birth, reflects the joy of Christmas expressed through music that is both exuberant and reflective. During the concert, you may be moved to laughter or tears and surely your heart will be warmed at one moment or another, responses germane to our collective human condition. Certainly one of our goals is to entertain, but the larger theme at work is one of shared inspiration. It seems as though much of contemporary life centers upon that which is immediate as distinct from that which is beautiful. However, the arts mirror the culture of society and your presence here reflects a passion for a higher level of the human experience. Thank you for attending, and on behalf of Briar Cliff University, “Merry Christmas!”

Out of respect to the musicians and because this concert is being recorded, we ask that you turn off any cellular phones, pagers, and watch alarms and refrain from flash photography during the

performance. Thank you for your consideration.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

O Come, All Ye Faithful John Francis Wade

O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him Born the King of Angels: O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him Christ the Lord!

Child, for us sinners Poor and in the manger, Fain we embrace thee, with awe and love; Who would not love thee, Loving us so dearly? O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God in the highest: O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him Christ the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, Born this happy morning, Jesu, thee be glory given; Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing: O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him Christ the Lord!

The First Nowell English Carol

The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light,And so it continued both day and night: Refrain

And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went:Refrain

The star drew nigh to the northwest;O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,And there it did both stop and stayRight over the place where Jesus lay:Refrain

Then enter’d in those wise men three,Full rev’rently upon their knee,And offer’d there in his presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense:Refrain

Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought: Refrain
