SAINT BONAVENTURE CHURCH
Christmas & The Holy Family
Page two Christmas & The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Church celebrates the Season of Christmas from the Vigil of the Nativity of the Lord on December 24 through the Baptism of the Lord on January 10. We are making this bulletin available for both Christmas and the Sunday after Christmas which is dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Celebrating Mass outside reminds us of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The Blessed Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus, “She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). The angels announced to the shepherds the birth of the Savior of the world, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 7:14). Then the shepherds go to see this Infant Savior and give glory and praise to God.
We join in praising God on the Feast Day of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In the Gospel Reading this Sunday from Luke 2:22-40, Joseph and Mary were in the Jerusalem Temple presenting the Infant Jesus to God the Father. While they were there, they encountered the elderly Simeon who was described as “righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.” The Holy Spirit had promised him that he would live to see the coming of the Christ of the Lord. Simeon rejoiced as he took the Child Jesus in his arms and blessed God saying, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:25-32). This is known as the Canticle of Simeon. This is prayed by priests, religious, and all who join in Night Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. It is a fitting prayer before we go to sleep.
Then Simeon blessed Mary and Joseph and foretold to Blessed Virgin Mary, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted—and you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Luke 2:33-35).
Then we hear of the elderly prophetess, Anna, who after the death of her husband, “Never left the temple, but worshipped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem” (Luke 2:36-38).
We are called to join with the angels, shepherds, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and Anna to announce the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world. We cannot hold this message inside. We must share the Good News with family and friends. We must share the Gospel with all we encounter.
St. Paul told us in his Letter to the Colossians, “Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).
May the Lord bless you and your family during this Season of Christmas and throughout the New Year.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of our parish volunteers. As I’ve said before, our parish would not be the same without our volunteers who give of their time and
talent. We have a very small parish staff so we depend on volunteers for so many of our ministries and activities. This year, with COVID, several volunteers have had to stay at home, resulting in a larger workload for our remaining volunteers. This is especially true with our Eucharistic Ministers and our ushers.
I also want to thank the volunteers who have helped with our outdoor Masses and our livestreaming. St. Bonaventure has at least 20 Masses per week, and we normally livestream about 10 of the Masses every week. Since mid-March, that equals about 800 Masses, 400 of which have been livestreamed. In addition to running the audio and livestreaming, there are many hours per week of setting up our outdoor church and then putting everything away. I don’t want to mention their names here because I might forget someone. Instead, can all of you please say “thank you” to these volunteers when you see them before or after Mass?
And since it is almost time for New Year’s resolutions, how about resolving to volunteer at our parish? We always need more volunteers, and once COVID is behind us, we’ll need even more volunteers. We will need to repopulate our choirs, our Eucharistic Ministers, our Ushers, etc. And we will also need to repopulate our many Ministries. I’m sure there is a ministry that will fit your schedule. Ask someone who is currently volunteering, or call the parish center.
I thank God for our volunteers. They are heaven sent.

Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of GodFriday, January 16:30 a.m. Fr. Joe Knerr8:30 a.m. Fr. Ruben Ruiz 7:15 p.m. Fr. Tran, Vietnamese
The Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it is a holy day. As we begin the New Year, the Faithful are encouraged to attend Mass. The title “Mother of God” is from the Greek “theotokos” literally translated “God-bearer.” This oldest feast of Mary celebrates Mary’s role in always directing the believer toward her Son.

MERRY CHRISTMAS The story of Christmas is the story of God’s relentless love for us. In Mother Teresa’s words, "It is Christmas every time you let God love others through you. It is Christmas every time you smile at your brother and offer him your hand.” Every day, Knights are given opportunities to make a difference whether through our church, community service or prayer. Join us and help make our church and community a better place. Warmest wishes from the Knights of Columbus for a joyful Christmas and a grace-filled New Year.
S.H.I.P. Helping the HomelessPrior to church renovation, St. Bonaventure hosted SHIP clients for two weeks in January in our parish hall. This year SHIP is seeking volunteers to provide dinners January 2-22 to be delivered to the SHIP house at 12361 Magnolia Street, Garden Grove 92841. For those unable to deliver to the home, other arrangements can be made. Contact Angie Koenig at 714-514-0203 or [email protected].
FAITH FORMATIONWe outgrow many things; faith doesn't have to be one of them.
Christmas VacationThere will be NO classes December 20 through January 2. Sunday programs resume January 3. Weekday classes resume January 5. God bless you and your families this holy season.
Office Closed The Faith Formation Office will be closed December 21 through January 3.
one solitary lifeHe was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village, where he worked in a carpentry shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher.
He never had a family or owned a home. He never set foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place he was born. He never wrote a book, or held an office. He did none of these things that usually accompany greatness.
While he was still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends deserted him. He was turned over to his enemies, and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for the only piece of property he had—his coat. When he was dead, he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave.
Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as this One Solitary Life.
