C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sin-ful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sin-ner.

M: [...] name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care:

C: Amen.

M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is wor-thy of praise.

SONG OF PRAISE

C: O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name in all the earth. Almighty God, merciful Father, you crown our life with your love. You take away our sin; you comfort our spirit; you make us pure and holy in your sight. You did not

spare your only Son, but gave him up for us all. O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name in all the earth.

O Son of God, eternal Word of the Father, you came to live with us; you made your Father known; you washed us from our sins in your own blood. You are the King of glory; you are the Lord! O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name in all the earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.

M: Merciful Father, you give eternal life to all who by true faith eat the body and blood of your Son. By his death for us all, make us bold, so that we will never be ashamed of Jesus, but will remain in him, and he in us, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.

He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LABC, the God of Israel, says: [...] I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’

14 “Now fear the LABC and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LABC. 15 But if serving the LABC seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LABC.”

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LABC to serve other gods! 17 It was the LABC our God him-self who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations

through which we traveled. 18 And the LABC drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LABC, because he is our God.”

PSALM 1

Please turn to page 64 in the front of the hymnal. Pastor sings the first half of each verse. All sing the second half of each verse, the refrains, and “Glory be to the Father....”

SECOND LESSON Ephesians 5:15–20 Be very careful, how you live— not as unwise but as wise,

16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to de-bauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one an-other with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

VERSE OF THE DAY

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

M: “Come, eat my bread and drink my wine. Leave your simple ways and live; walk in wisdom’s way” (Proverbs 9:5–6).

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL John 6:51–58 “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If any-

one eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

56 “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live be-cause of me.

58 “This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.”

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heav-en and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eter-nally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spo-

WHO IS INVITED TO TAKE THE LORD’S SUPPER WITH US

We invite to the Lord’s Table the communicant members of Trinity Evan-

gelical Lutheran Church and those who are members of other congrega-

tions of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or the Evan-

gelical Lutheran Synod (ELS). If you our guest today we ask you to speak

with our pastor prior to the service if you would like to join us at the

Lord’s Table. (He’d be glad to speak with you afterward too.)

Because of the serious nature of this Sacrament, and our Lord’s charge that

we administer it in accordance with his will, we practice close commun-

ion—as did the early Christian Church. We do this out of love for all peo-

ple to ensure, as far as humanly possible, that all who commune with us:

Are baptized.

Are aware of the Real Presence of Christ’s body and blood.

Are trusting only in Christ’s merits.

Confess with us the truths of Scripture.

Since the Lord’s Supper is a public declaration of unity in faith (1 Corin-

thians 10:17) we ask our children and our dear guests to make a public dec-

laration of faith before receiving the sacrament with us. Our pastor is are

happy to discuss with you what kind of discussion with him or classes this

might involve.

Jesus’ love and forgiveness are freely offered to all in God’s Word whether

they commune or not. In Christ we all stand on the same level before God.

Our motive and goal is love (1 Timothy 1:5). Our love for God compels us

to administer his sacrament according to Holy Scripture. Our love for

people compels us to practice close communion so that we will not lead

anyone into judgment, or encourage anyone to hypocrisy. If it is not possi-

ble today, we would love to have you come to the Lord’s Table with us

soon

Our Weekly Catechism Review Page

“Your will be done,” we pray to the Father, “on earth as in heaven.”

Last week we looked at the scene below from the opposite direction. In

the foreground Jesus was praying. Anguished, he asked so earnestly for

help—and for God’s will, not his will, to be done—that his sweat was

like drops of blood falling to the ground (Luke 22:44).

Now our perspective switches. Near us we see Peter, James and John. A

stone’s throw away, amid the gnarled trees of the olive grove, Jesus prays

in torment. Jesus’ three disciples fall asleep.

Jesus rises from prayer. He goes back to the disciples and finds them

slumbering, exhausted from sorrow.

“Why are you sleeping?” he asks. “Get up and pray so that you will not

fall into temptation” (Luke 22:45-46).

When Jesus comes back a second time and finds the disciples sleeping

once more, they do not know what to say to him (Mark 14:40).

What should we say? “Lord, you died for me. Forgive me! Don’t let the

devil or this world ensnare me. On my own, my flesh will fail me. May

your Father’s will, not mine, or that of my deadly enemies, be done.”
