Minister: Is not this the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice; to share your bread with the hungry; to bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to clothe them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly.

People: If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Minister: The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

The hymn is sung on page 2 — and then the service continues below

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray. God of mercy, you are full of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in mercy, and always ready to forgive. Grant us grace to renounce all evil and to cling to Christ, that in every way we may prove to be your loving children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Please be seated

Hearken to my voice, O Lord, when I call; have mercy on me and answer me.

You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face.” Your face, Lord, will I seek.

Hide not your face from me, nor turn away your servant in displeasure.

You have been my helper; cast me not away; do not forsake me, O God of my salvation.

Though my father and my mother forsake me, the Lord will sustain me.

Show me your way, O Lord; lead me on a level path, because of my enemies.

Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice.

What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!

O tarry and await the Lord’s pleasure; be strong, and he shall comfort your heart; wait patiently for the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?

When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell.

Though an army should encamp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid;

And though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him.

One thing have I asked of the Lord; one thing I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;

To behold the fair beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock.

Even now he lifts up my head above my enemies round about me.

Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; I will sing and make music to the Lord.

T h e C r e e dWe believe in God, Who has created and is creating, Who has come in Jesus to reconcile And to make all things new. We trust in God, Who calls us to be the Church; To love and serve others, To seek justice and resist evil, To proclaim Jesus, crucified, dead and risen; Our judge and our hope, In life, In death, In life beyond death, God is with us: We are not alone, Thanks be to God. A warm welcome to one and all on this second Sunday in Lent. As we gather together to worship in this special season, we are aware that it is God who comes to us and all we must do is receive that gift with humility and gladness. If you are visiting today, we offer you a special welcome and invite you to return. Please take a moment to fill out the visitor card and place it in the offering plate as it is passed to you. If you are interested in uniting with the Church in the Forest, please feel free to chat with one of the ministers, or ferret out Marilyn Kren, our Membership Chair, and share with her your interest. It would be fitting and exciting to have a New Member Sunday on Palm Sunday, March 20, therefore, if you are interested please let Marilyn or one of the clergy know. The Church has three groups to which the congregation forwards names of those interested in serving: the Nominating Committee for the coming year, the Board of the Church, and the Fund for the Future committee. Let us know if you are interested in serving. A special thanks to Joseph Hedlind, classical guitarist, our musical guest this morning. Please join and reach out to old friends and new at the coffee and

fellowship time following the service. Thank you to Arlen and Cindy Lackey for the great goodies today. The flowers at the altar this morning are given by Lettie Bennett, “In thanksgiving for all who serve as crucifers, ushers and readers.” Speaking of which, might YOU be able to assist in worship? Greeting people as they arrive and then ushering; carrying in the cross as crucifer, which also entails reading the daily psalm; or reading the first lesson of the day as lector. Please sign up on the bulletin board if you might be able to help… and then there are bakers needed, too! We are sorry to let you know of the passing of Erl Lagerholm. We will keep you posted on the date and time of a memorial service for “The Erl of Carmel.”

O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us offer ourselves and our gifts to God.

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; Govern and uphold them, now and always.

Day by day we bless you; We praise your Name for ever.Lord, keep us from all sin today; Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.Lord, show us your love and mercy; For we put our trust in you.In you, Lord, is our hope; And we shall never hope in vain.

The minister will lead the prayers and conclude each prayer with:

We pray to the Lord. The congregation will then respond:

Lord hear our prayer.

Concluding prayer in unison

God of all times and places, in Jesus Christ, lifted up on the cross, you opened for us the path to eternal life. Grant that we, being born again of water and the Spirit, may joyfully serve you in newness of life and faithfully walk in your holy ways; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

According to a January article in the New York Times, about 150,000 people are enrolled nationally in more than 119 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) at colleges and universities. They join for the brain stimulation, the camaraderie, for the pursuit of knowledge. CSUMB hosts the program, the classes—scheduled from one-day offerings to several days and “geared” to people fifty and older—coming across like a tasty buffet of intellectual inquiry.

Melinda Coffey Armstead will be leading such a session on “How the French Fell in Love with Japan.” The opening of Japan in 1854 hit the French art scene with an incoming tide of images, objects and textiles that revolutionized the arts in France. Accompanied by a stunning slide presentation featuring Japanese netsuke, wood block prints, and works by French Impressionists and Post-impressionists, pianist and art historian Melinda Coffey Armstead will examine the strong Japanese influence on French art. Included in the program is an enchanting live performance of the piano music of Debussy.

Joseph Hedlind is a classically trained guitarist, newly returned from studies at U.C. Berkeley. Before Berkeley he studied for nearly ten years with Terrence Farrell, a critically acclaimed classical guitarist, well-known to audiences on the Peninsula and beyond. He returns with new-found passion for the guitar, and for a repertoire that includes not only familiar chestnuts, but some of the other kind too.

We heard him play at the Farmer’s Market in Monterey and we can vouch for his formidable talent and excellent taste. Please give him your warmest welcome.
