GOD’S WAYS

In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gos-pel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The L ’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love.

Dear Parishioners,

It was a pleasure, last weekend, to participate in two events that marked the conclusion of our observance of our 125th Anniversary. Saturday evening’s ceremony of the designation of Fourth Avenue and Seventy-third Street as “Our Lady of Angels Way” was very thoughtfully prepared by City Councilman Vincent Gentile and his staff. Everyone who was present was uplifted by the event. Sunday’s liturgical celebration at the 12:00pm mass, led by Bishop DiMarzio, was a joyful celebration and we were honored by visiting priests who served here: Msgr. Michael Phillips, Father Rodnev Lapommeray, Father Raphael Perez (as a seminarian); priests who grew up in this parish; Father Thomas Haggerty, Msgr. John O’Brien, Father John Replogle, S.J. and neighbors: Msgr. John Maloney, Father Robert Adamo, and Father Kevin Sweeney. I am grateful to Father Espinal for his preparation of the liturgy and to all the servers, lectors, ushers, sacristans and the music ministry in both English and Spanish. Thanks, also, to all who came to the reception in the gym on such a warm afternoon and who assisted in the cleanup. On another note; I don’t recall a season in which there have been so many natural disasters. The Hurricane Harvey collection last week netted $6,060.00 which has been forwarded to the diocese. This weekend we will help the victims of “Hurricane Irma” and we’ll follow the diocese directives about the disasters in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Daily Mass Schedule: In this past May, I announced that we would discontinue the daily 11:45am mass. Father Lewk’s impending retirement was part of the consideration. Considering the shortage of priests, I was unsure that Father would be replaced. However, as you know, Msgr. Wassef has been assigned to the parish and Father Lewk has pledged his availability so, as of tomorrow, Monday, October 2nd, the 11:45am mass will return to the calendar. The mass, however, will not be celebrated on holidays.

I encourage as many as possible to consider signing up for “ARISE.” These scripture-based small groups have revitalized a significant portion of the parish. I especially encourage the continuation of the men’s group. The signup is today and you can leave your name at the rectory if you missed today.

We welcome the members of the Life Center of New York and their baby bottles. Loose change adds up and helps them in their ministry to women facing the excruciating decision about abortion. They also serve mothers who choose life and need support for their newborn babies.

I’ll close for now - Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone
