A WORD FROM FR. IVAN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week I will write the last of the three writings about the Second Ecumenical Vatican

Council. We already spoke about the Constitutions of Dei Verbum and Sacrosanctum

Concilium. Today we will speak briefly about the Constitution of Lumen Gentium

highlighting the aspect of People of God and Communion.

In order to help the explanation of the main contents of this Constitution I am going to use Sources of Renewal, a

study on the renewal of Vatican II, written by Karol Wojtyla on the occasion of a synod in his dioceses of Krakow in

1972.

The people of God, an ancient Biblical concept, has become, thanks to Vatican II, one of the main contents to

which the historical process of enrichment of the Faith which we lived in the relation of the Council. The reality of

the people of God is rooted above all else in the revealed reality of God, who by the free act of his love has turned

towards men, towards the men in the world. The consciousness of the Church as people of God therefore

presupposes the consciousness of creation, of salvation and of redemption, and is founded on these.

“Communio”: proper bond of the Church as People of God Communio (communion) refers to the type of union

which typifies the Church-people of God and which constitutes the proper bond of this community.

Lumen Gentium 32: “If therefore in the Church everyone does not proceed by the same path, nevertheless all are

called to sanctity and have received an equal privilege of faith through the justice of God (see 2 Peter 1:1). And if by

the will of Christ some are made teachers, pastors and dispensers of mysteries on behalf of others, yet all share a

true equality with regard to the dignity and to the activity common to all the faithful for the building up of the Body

of Christ.

For the distinction which the Lord made between sacred ministers and the rest of the People of God bears within it

a certain union, since pastors and the other faithful are bound to each other by a mutual need. Pastors of the

Church, following the example of the Lord, should minister to one another and to the other faithful. These in their

turn should enthusiastically lend their joint assistance to their pastors and teachers. Thus in their diversity all bear

witness to the wonderful unity in the Body of Christ. This very diversity of graces, ministries and works gathers the

children of God into one, because "all these things are the work of one and the same Spirit" (1 Cor 12:11).

Therefore the communio, as a proper bond of the community of the people of God in the Church, is expressed in a particular

“distinction” that “includes a bond”, and, consequently, a “witness to the wonderful unity in the Body of Christ” of the pastors

and the faithful given in their ‘diversity’. Even more the hierarchical constitution of the Church, which we will speak about

below, presupposes “a true equality” of all the members of the people of God. This equality is founded on “the dignity and the

common action of all the faithful in the building up of the body Christ.” This common dignity of all is truly human, proper to

every man as a person, and also to every Christian coming from the order of grace. But it is not only in this field and of this

title that Vatican II declares a “true equality” of all the members of the Church, as they also have the essential task of “building

up the body of Christ.”

By the constitution of the People of God is more fundamentally of the order of grace, that is not of the order of authority on

which the hierarchical order of the Church is founded. This order of grace is also the foundation of the ultimate equality of all

the members of the Church in regards to the reality of the salvation to which all are equally called.

The Second Vatican Council has dedicated a lot of its efforts to make the faithful conscious of the bond which the

communio constitutes for the community of the People of God. It seems therefore that we can say that the authentic

deepening of the faith of the Church as a community – in which the proper bond of being is constituted from the

commiunio – depending on the greater part of the interior developing and the renewal of the Church in the spirit of

Vatican II.
