Dear Parishioners, As I looked out of my bedroom window on a recent bright

summer morning, a parade of soon-to-be BC freshmen were headed up the steps from the lower campus on their way to their next orientation activity. Aside from their comfortable summer attire, I happened to notice that each and every one of them were carrying a backpack. In that instant, and here I am dating myself, I recalled that at no time throughout my school-days, including college, did I carry a backpack. Along with my contemporaries, I carried either a schoolbag or an attaché case. These future freshmen, however, had both hands free. How times have changed!

Now all the while these thoughts were going through my head, I was also parallel processing about what to write about Luke Chapter 12 that we will be hearing sections from on Sun-day, August 11 & 18, the two weekends that this bulletin covers.

What I almost immediately realized was that my thoughts about the backpacks were exactly how Chapter 12 ends: the signs of the times and how to interpret them. Unfortunate-ly, and for reasons I never understood, the lectionary leaves out that thought-provoking final section [Luke 12: 54 – 59]. My morning revelations, however, inspired me now to write something, not about how to interpret carrying backpacks, but about interpreting that section.

There Jesus asks his hearers to consider the signs of their own present times. He challenges them to judge for themselves what is right. Imagine that? Such freedom of conscience! The basis for following the sensus fidelium (the sense of the faithful).

In effect Jesus is telling them not to follow blindly what was done in the past or what others – even religious or government leaders – tell them to do, but engage in first noticing all that is happening or changing around them. I am sure Jesus hopes that they will consider these signs of the times in light of all that he taught: the principles of love of God and neighbor, a love of even enemies.

As we engage this process of noticing and reflecting in our own day, I suspect it will cause us to question – as it did Je-sus and his hearers – whether there are laws, teachings and practices that need to change. Might some of them simply no longer – or maybe never did – mediate principles of mercy and justice? I can think of many off the top of my head. I am sure you can too.

In the months ahead might we as parish community fill our “backpacks” with love, respect, dignity, mercy and justice for all peoples, seriously consider the signs of our times by listen-

If we do that, we will surely fan the flames of that purifying fire that Jesus wants to see blaze upon the earth.

Scripture passage to pray about during the week:

“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Luke 12:48

When I meet my Creator face-to-face, will I be able to say that I used the freedom and many gifts He entrusted to me to be gener-ous with the immigrant who reaches our borders full of fear and

very few material possessions?
