Dear Parishioners,It started out, for me anyway, as a foretaste of the heavenly

banquet in the Kingdom of Heaven. There were people of every age, gender, religion, race, culture, nation and way of life. This diverse crowd were truly enjoying one another’s compa-ny with great animation: eating, drinking, singing, dancing and engaging in lively conversation.

But this beautiful dream I was having soon turned into a horrible nightmare. I realized at some point - no one was wearing a mask! This banquet wasnow not heavenly at all, but totally unsafe. Alarmed by this, I attempted to get away. I tried and tried butat every turn there were unmasked people blockingmy way. I might have otherwise joined them in theirexchange of pleasantries were the circumstancesdifferent. Instead I kept searching for a way out. Whilemy anxieties continued to mount, as happens with all dreams,I eventually woke up.

I suspect my unconscious pulled together these pieces for my recent dream turned nightmare, because earlier that day, Fr. Don MacMillan and I were discussing how to run the re-hearsals and perform the ceremony for upcoming weddings at the Church. We have two, in fact, this weekend. While it is so wonderful to be able to participate as the presider at a wedding, it has sadly become a sort of a nightmare these days trying to figure out just what to do to keep everyone in attendance safe.

Reflecting upon and praying with this dream/nightmare, I found my attention centering on just how much context changes things. Without the context of a pandemic, my dream would have been truly comforting. I probably would have awakened profoundly consoled by the vision. Instead, this vi-sion became terribly frightening.

Think perhaps of how frightened you might have been in past years if someone showed up in a store or bank with some of the facial coverings we now wear. Few of us would have thought this masked person was simply trying to keep from getting or spreading germs. We probably would have thought this person was up to no good. Yet, nowadays in our contex-tual environment we see things differently.

We can actually see things differently whenever we provide a different context for the narratives we tell ourselves. For example, think of the almost immediate annoyance when an-other driver cuts us off. What’s the narrative we might tell? “That reckless driver is just plain rude, totally obnoxious!” Or perhaps alternately, “maybe that concerned driver has to get to the emergency room right away for whatever reason.” As we fill in the rest of the possible story, our emotions shift, don’t they?

Context is also key to understanding Scripture. That is why

esto, intenté escapar. Lo intenté y lo intenté, pero a cada paso había personas sin máscaras que bloqueaban mi

camino. De lo contrario, podría haberme unido a ellos en su intercambio de placeres si fueran las circunstancias difer-entes. En vez de eso, seguí buscando una salida. Mientras las ansiedades continuaban escalando, como sucede en todos mis sueños, finalmente me desperté.

Sospecho que mi inconsciente juntó estas piezas en mi reciente sueño convertido en pesadilla, porque ese día, el P. Don MacMillan y yo estábamos discutiendo cómo dirigir los ensayos y realizar la ceremonia para las próximas bodas en la Iglesia. Tenemos dos, de hecho, este fin de semana. Si bien es maravilloso poder participar como celebrante en una boda, lamentablemente se ha convertido en una especie de pesadilla en estos días tratando de averiguar qué hacer para mantener a todos los asistentes a salvo.

Reflexionando y orando con este sueño/pesadilla, encontré mi atención centrada en cómo el contexto cambia las cosas. Sin el contexto de una pandemia, mi sueño habría sido ver-daderamente reconfortante. Probablemente me habría con-solado profundamente esa visión. En cambio, ella se volvió terriblemente aterradora.

Piensen, tal vez, en lo asustados que podrían haberse sentido en años anteriores si alguien hubiera aparecido en una tienda o un banco con algunas de las cubiertas faciales que ahora usamos. Unos pocos de nosotros habrían pensado que esta persona enmascarada estaba simplemente tratando de evitar contagiarse o propagar gérmenes. Probablemente hab-ríamos pensado que esta persona no era buena. Sin embargo, hoy en día, en nuestro entorno contextual vemos las cosas de manera diferente.

En realidad, podemos ver las cosas de una manera difer-ente cada vez que proporcionamos un contexto diferente a las narrativas que nos contamos. many a homilist tries to provide the cultural or time-bound context for what we are hearing, lest we impose our own context willy-nilly on it. Actually, one of my favorite parts of studying and interpreting Scripture is researching and discover-ing more and more of the context for what we read and hear.

Our interactions with one another also require context. Probably without exception all of us have been involved at one time or another in a passionate conversation, debate, dis-pute or disagreement in which abstract principles or general-ities are being exchanged. Yet, all the while right beneath the surface there are personal experiences not being shared but that are driving the point of view of each speaker. Often, we are simply not sharing the broader context or personal expe-rience with our listeners. And while ‘context’ can be variously defined, in this context it means, as Noel R. Williams writes in his 2004 book, How to get a 2:1 in media, communications and cultur-al studies, “all those things in the situation which are relevant to meaning in some sense, but which I haven’t identified.”

Sharing some of those unidentified relevancies, however, can at times make us feel quite vulnerable. Yet vulnerability might act like the mustard seed or the yeast that we hear about in the long version of our Gospel this weekend. Even a wee bit of context can often broaden our collective perspective and help the Kingdom of God grow among us.

While some of our dreams may turn into nightmares, may most of our nightmares instead turn into pleasant, consol-ing, comforting dreams as we pursue with all our heart the Kingdom of God among us, learning how – even now in our pandemic context – to experience a foretaste of the heavenly banquet.

Reservations for Mass Suspended for the Summer As we slowly move into Phase 3 of the Governor’s reopening plan, we have decided to suspend our reservation system at least for the months of July and August. While all other protocols and procedures are still in place – like checking the COVID-19 health checklist before arriving and wearing a mask fully covering your nose and mouth during the Mass – we will especially need your cooperation with the following:

• Arrive on Time. We cannot admit anyone once the Mass begins.

• Use the three front entrances to the Church (center, BC or Commonwealth Avenue) to enter being sure to keep proper distance on the sidewalk and on the steps. [If you need special assistance for use of the handicapped entrance, please contact the parish office by Thursday.]

• Wait for an usher to take you to an open place.

• Once the allotted places in our Church have been filled, even if the Mass has not yet begun, we will not be able to admit you. Please be understanding.

• Be sure to contact the Parish Office if you test positive for COVID-19.

• Regularly check our website to see if we have received any notices of someone contracting the virus who was at one of our Masses.

• Keep a record of what Mass or Masses you attended with an approximation of where you sat for each of these Masses.

Certainly, our hope is that we may continue to proceed in this fashion as we consider slowly reintroducing other public Masses. We rely on your cooperation. Thank You.

Notice:Dr. Anthony Compagnone, a parishioner and member of the Liturgy

Commission, has advised us that masks are effective ONLY if they cover both your nose and your mouth, with a snug fit over the nasal bridge. This is the best way to prevent your

respiratory droplets from escaping into the space around you and onto others.

Further, he pointed out that recent studies have shown that, while valved masks may make it easier for you to inhale, they are ineffective in preventing your exhaled breath from

contaminating the air around you.

Valved masks of any kind, therefore, will be prohibited for use during Mass at St. Ignatius. The Greeter at your liturgy will happily provide you with an acceptable mask to wear as you enter the church. We also ask that you wear your mask properly throughout the Mass.

A Word about FinancesYou may have seen in the news some controversy about the Catholic Church receiving money from the U.S. government. At the end of April 2020, St. Ignatius Parish received a $93,100 loan

under the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). These loans were available to small businesses and non-profits to ensure that employees could continue to be paid and utility costs covered.

During the 10 week period of the loan, 94% was used for salaries of lay staff, and the remaining 6% was used to cover part of the cost of our utilities. None of the loan was used for the support of our priests or woman religious. The loan enabled us to keep all of our lay staff on the payroll,

including our part-time musicians, despite having to cancel public Masses as of March 15th. We have kept meticulous records and therefore hope that this loan will be forgiven.

Energized by Pope Francis’ challenge to hear the cry of the poor, and the cry of the Earth, we urge you toinstruct Jim Driscoll, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference to ensure that theMassachusetts legislature passes environmental justice legislation before the July 31 deadline. You havealready endorsed these policies through the work of Jim Driscoll with the Faith Science Alliance, and theMassachusetts Catholic Conference.
