2/Third Sunday of Lent

Third Sunday of Lent w March 18th - 19th, 2017Exodus 17:3-7 w Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 w John 4:5-42

Dear Parishioners,This Friday, March 24th, we commemorate the martyrdom of

Oscar Romero. His assassination in 1980 during massive political unrest in El Salvador shocked the world and highlighted the hor-ror of the exploitation of the poor masses by a rich and ruling few.

Perhaps some of you have seen the stirring 1989 movie, Rome-ro, based on the last three years of this saintly archbishop’s life. The movie ends with this poignant statement flashed on the screen: "He had spoken the disturbing truth. Many chose not to listen ... the struggle for peace and freedom, justice and dignity goes on."

Such struggles we know continue even in our own country today as we try to speak what has seemingly become a disturbing truth for some of our fellow citizens, namely, that our Judeo-Christian tradition demands without question that we welcome immigrants and refugees, showing compassion and love towards them: “you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were for-eigners in Egypt” [Dt. 10:19] and “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me” [Mt. 25:40].

There are many other demanding truths of our tradition. On Saturday, March 25th, the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, we are reminded of still one more. On this day, exactly 9 months before Christmas, we recall Mary’s “fiat,” her “yes” to the conception of our Savior. The incarnation therefore demands our unrelenting and rigorous defense of the lives of the unborn. This in turn reminds us that we must stand up for all human life from womb to tomb, that we support unwed mothers and defend the victims of domestic violence.

As we continue our Lenten journey, perhaps we might pray the “Angelus” for the dignity of all human life, petitioning together: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord.

I am sure you will agree how fitting this closing prayer of the “Angelus” truly is during this Lenten season when the Church looks forward to again celebrating the Pascal Mysteries. Post-Eas-ter, when tradition calls us to then pray the “Regina Coeli,” may we still continue our petitions for the dignity of all human life, yet now with the prayer: O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; grant we be-seech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

We surely desire everlasting life for all. May we together give our welcome of the foretaste of everlasting life here on earth to the unborn, the mother, the father, the infant, the child, the elderly, the immigrant, the refugee…

With hope in our God who never disappoints,Fr. Joe

Joe

CRS Rice Bowl Week Three: El SalvadorFernando: Fernando dreams of becoming a businessman. He also dreams of a better future for his family, and this has motivated him to sell cookbooks on the bus. It was his dreams that led him to YouthBuild, a six-month, CRS-sponsored program that trains young people in business. There, he found a positive community to help him pursue his passion, despite the challenges of life in El Salvador. Training for six months with YouthBuild wasn’t easy on Fernando or his

family. “YouthBuild is a family because families help you realize your dreams,” Fernando says. After graduating from YouthBuild in 2016, he took part in a series of entrepreneur workshops organized by CRS and is currently working on a new business plan. He is also a part of the YouthBuild network of graduates, youth leaders who mentor other young people and look for new opportunities for employment and growth. CRS Rice Bowls, with a Lent calendar tucked inside, are available on the Outreach table and on the table in the Lannon Chapel.
