The Baptism of the Lord Saint Mark Church January 13, 2019

Pastor’s Corner This Sunday we jump ahead in our Gos-pel readings, from the time Jesus was an infant until He was approximately 30 years of age. He has left His home town of Nazareth, and is pre-paring to begin His ministry of proclaiming the message of the Kingdom of God. But first He goes to the Jordan River, where John the Baptist is Baptizing the people with water. John is the one who is preparing them for the One who will Baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit! When Jesus comes up out of the water, the voice of God the Father proclaims, "This is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased!" Whenever I Baptize an infant, a child, or an adult, I remind them that we are all children of God, and it is through the Sacrament of Baptism that we are washed clean of original sin and wel-comed into our faith community. Jesus obvious-ly did not need to be cleansed of any type of sin, but He wanted to begin His ministry by showing the people how He was a member of their com-munity, and would then go on to become their shepherd. I was Baptized when I was about two weeks old, but that was back in the 1950's when "limbo" was still accepted by many people as the place where unbaptized babies went if they died before they received the Sacrament. "Limbo" is no longer part of our faith, but it is still important to have our children Baptized so that they can begin their journey as part of our faith communi-ty. Obviously, the parents and the godparents are the primary teachers of our faith to their children, and it is up to us as a faith community to wel-come them into the Catholic Church. During this week I invite us all to reflect upon our own Baptism, and the importance of this Sacrament. Even if we were too young to remember it, Baptism is the first Sacrament that we receive as we prepare for a lifelong journey with our Lord and Savior. May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways,

Father Paul Spellman

FROM OUR PASTOR

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

SPIRITUAL LIFE SPIRITUAL LIFE

Learn how to help children suffering from trauma With mass shootings, natural disasters, and the social climate today, our children are living in a world that can be very scary at times. Children who have suffered from trauma, through abuse, loss, or another tragedy, may have different ways of viewing the world through the distorted lens of their fears and worries, and often need the help of trusted adults to guide them through their emotions. Many children use denial as their first coping method, so getting them to talk about what’s happened and explore how they’re feeling and what scares them now is important. Consider consulting someone with expertise in child development – a psychologist, counselor or experienced teacher might have suggestions as to how best to support a child in the aftermath of a frightening experience.

Veronica Cappolonga,

CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appear-ance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we cele-brate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River.  John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him.  Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word.
