Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, I learned about a special May Day consecration too late to give you a heads-up in last week's bulletin, but we can still know and be grateful that on Friday May 1st the Catholic Bishops of the United States and Canada joined together - in this time of special need for protection and fortitude due to the suffering brought by the coronavirus pandemic - to renew the consecration of our two nations to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, who is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, announced this action. The collective dedication or entrustment of a nation to Mary is meant to be a reminder to the faithful of the Blessed Mother’s role in the Gospel and her effective intercession before her Son on behalf of those in need. The first bishop of the United States was Bishop John Carroll of Baltimore in the state of Maryland. He promoted devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, and placed the United States under her protection in a pastoral letter in 1792. The twenty-one bishops attending the Sixth Provincial Council of Baltimore in 1846 named the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Conception. At the dedication of the beautiful National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. in 1959, the bishops again consecrated our nation to the Blessed Mother. The present renewal of consecration on May 1 reaffirms previous Marian entrustments. We know that May is the month of Mary and of the Rosary. Every year during this month, the Church seeks the special intercession of the Moth-er of God. This May, led by our bishops, let us all fervently ask for the assistance of Our Lady even more earnestly as we face the many and harmful effects of this global pandemic. Let us not lose heart or fail to express our Easter joy. And so on a happier note, since today is May 3, let me tell you about a great event that happened here on Victory Boulevard on May 4 in the year 1952. His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman came to our parish that Sunday to cele-brate the 9:30am Mass - and to dedicate our new church. As he wrote to our pastor Father Philip Conran on April 12, "It is a great happiness for me to offer congratulations to you and your devoted parishioners on the completion of your new church dedicated to the worship of God and the salvation of souls under the glorious patronage of Saint Teresa." Father Conran, who would later be honored with the title of Monsignor, briefly told the story of our parish in the dedication booklet, starting with how it was incorporated on March 19, 1926 in the Archdiocesan Chancery Office on Madison Avenue near Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, in the presence of His Eminence Cardinal Patrick Hayes, his Vicar General Msgr. John Dunn, Father Conran himself, and Francis Finnigan and Edward Ross, our first Parish Trustees. (Every parish in our Archdiocese has five Trustees. They are: the Archbishop of New York, his Vicar General, the pastor, and two lay members of the parish. Respected and trustworthy lay persons are nominated by the pastor and appointed by the Archbishop. Each serves for a term of one year, and can be renewed twice. Our present Trustees are Ginevra Porcelli and Nicholas Caruselle. Trustees also serve ex officio on our Parish and Finance Councils.) In the dedication booklet, Father Conran explained how we became established here: ¦Permission was granted to Father Conran to purchase property owned by the Volunteers of America at 1622 Victory Boulevard at a cost of $20,ooo. The building on this property had been used by the Volunteers of America as a home for children. It was now to be trans-formed into a dwelling place for God and a place of worship for 150 grateful people. As time went on two additions were made to this temporary church until eventually it had a seating capacity of 300 people. With the advent of housing devel-opments in nearby sections of the narrow parish limits, this space became too small to accommodate all the parishioners. In the spring of 1949, at the suggestion of Msgr. Joseph Farrell, Dean of the Richmond Catholic Clergy, Father Conran requested permission of Cardinal Spellman to build a new Saint Teresa's Church. Permission was graciously given, and ground was broken on August 7, 1950. Now after many heartbreaking delays in the course of construction of this beautiful shrine church, His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman will dedicate it today, Sunday May 4, 1952, to the honor and glory of God under the Patronage of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus. Our kind and generous people rejoice today in the completion of this lasting memorial to their splendid faith.” With appreciation to you kind and generous people who are members of Saint Teresa Church today, Msgr. William Belford

TODAY’S GROWING IN FAITH PAGE
In this time of coronavirus illness and death, be sure to think about the timely answer on our GROWING IN FAITH page to the question: Why does God let us suffer? Also read about the Patron Saint of our neighboring parish on Bradley Avenue: Saint Rita of Cascia—a wife, mother, widow, and a patron saint of impossible causes.
Holy Name Gift
Among the generous contributions from individual parishioners to help our parish with expenses while we are not having our usual Sunday collections, I would like to thank the men of our Holy Name Society. They thoughtfully and spontaneously voted to help us now with money raised through their work with our annual
Christmas Tree displays. They have recently made two contributions of $2500 each for the needs of our parish. FREE MEALS FOR PEOPLE

. Just as many families need a paycheck each week, your parish family counts on our Sunday collection to pay our expenses. Many thanks to those who have mailed or delivered their contributions. I hope many will help us make up for the baskets that will be emp-ty for weeks. But please also think about using this crisis to make your Sunday contributing easier and more dependable. You can do this by joining others who use WeShare. On a computer follow these sim-ple steps: 1. Go to our parish website: www.saintteresasi.org. 2. Scroll down to a cute little church and see “Give Online.” 3. Go to Primary Church Collection and then Recurring Church Collec-tion. 4. Think about a percentage of your income, and enter the amount you want to give. Money can be deducted safely from bank accounts and credit cards, under your control and as you see fit. Many people do this already. I think that having more people join us in this practice is important for our parish’s future.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN LISTEN?
Everyone goes through crises sometimes. When that is happening, we can benefit from a conversation
with a professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective.
Our parish can make a connection for you with the
Archdiocese of New York's PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK.
Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor on Staten Island or any-place in the Archdiocese, for up to six meetings, with
only a $10 co-pay per session. This can be arranged easily. Tell one of our priests that you want to talk with a counselor. He will contact the PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK on your
behalf, and then you can call and arrange your first visit with someone who can listen.
IMPORTANT REASONS TO FILL OUT YOUR CENSUS FORM NOW
Please do not miss the chance to help our Staten Is-
land community by giving information about our numbers and our need for services.
The Census form is easy and quick to fill out.
The Census is a count of all individuals living in the US regardless of citizenship status.
Children will not be counted in school. You must list them so we know they are here.
The Census form does not ask for your social secu-rity number or any financial information.
Please fill out the entire Census form. If you do not answer at all, or if you leave things out, Census
workers will be obligated to come to your address. Almost every part of our daily lives is impacted by
the decisions based on Census data– things like public transit, school funding, and essential local,
state, federal programs.
