Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Please read a letter inside from Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, speaking for the Bishops of the United States about the tragic killing of George Floyd. And look for mail sent this week with parish news and anticipation of being able to start public Masses before long. The easiest way to get accurate up-to-date news is to join Flocknote. This most unusual school year continues for our lower grades until June 23. But graduation ceremonies for our Kindergarteners and Eighth Graders happen later this week. Please join me in applauding our teachers for rising to the challenge of new ways of teaching, and let us appreciate all parents for their wisdom and financial investment in choosing Catholic School education for their children. You might like to know that at least two present Justices of the United States Supreme Court graduated from Catholic schools. I learned about Justice Clarence Thomas’ love for his teaching nuns from watching an excellent documentary on PBS Channel 13 - "Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words." His grandparents sent him to a Catholic elementary school in Savannah, Georgia. He went to a Catholic high school seminary to become a priest. But on the day of the shooting of Dr. Martin Luther King, prejudicial words of other students against Dr. King shocked him and killed that thought of a vocation. The other Catholic school graduate is a New Yorker. Justice Sonia Sotomayor graduated from our Archdiocese’s Cardinal Spellman High School in the Northeast Bronx. On the next page you can read the names of our Graduates. I always write a letter for their yearbook, in the hope that they, or their families or friends, may now or later find something useful for their personal spiritual journey. I am happy to share that message with you today, and invite you to continue your own spiritual development too. Dear 2020 Graduates of Saint Teresa School,

No matter what you are feeling today - joy or sorrow, worry or trust, confidence or doom - you can find something to help you talk to God in the Bible's Book of Psalms. The Book of Psalms has all kinds of meaningful prayers - one hundred fifty in all. It has hymns of praise (29, 33, 92, 113, 148) for when you are happy with God. It has psalms of complaint ( 5, 7,13, 22, 69, 74, 86) for when you feel ignored or unfairly punished. There are also songs of thanksgiving if you have been sick (30, 32, 71,116) or if you have been in a fight (18, 92, 118, 140). And don't miss the wisdom psalms that give great advice about how to have the best life you possibly can (14, 49, 51,112, 128). Here are the words of the first psalm, that set the stage for the one hundred forty nine that follow. This translation of Psalm 1 comes from The New Community Bible translation, available at St.Pauls/ Alba House on Victory Boulevard:

How blessed is the one who does not follow the counsel of the wicked,

nor takes the way that sinners take, nor sits where the scoffers sit. Instead, he finds delight in the law of the Lord, and mediates on his law day and night.

He is like a tree planted beside a brook, yielding its fruit in due season, and its leaves never wither. In all he does, he succeeds.

But it is different with the wicked, quite different;

they are like chaff driven away by the wind. The wicked will not stand their ground when judgment comes,

nor will the sinners be admitted to the assembly of the just. For the Lord guards the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish. No one can open the Psalms and enjoy them for you. Today or in the near future, I hope that you and others who look at this yearbook will explore the Psalms and find some personal favorites to live by. With praise and blessings for you, Monsignor William Belford

HAIL HOLY QUEEN Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Congratulations and God’s blessings to all parishioners who are graduating this

spring from schools at every level, including College, High School, Elementary School,

Kindergarten and PreK. Our Graduates have studied, played, learned, and grown very

much! May they love Jesus Christ and become great disciples, for their own benefit and for

the good of their families and the whole world.

IMPORTANT REASONS TO FILL OUT YOUR CENSUS FORM NOW

Please do not miss the chance to help our Staten Island community by giving information about

our numbers and our need for services.

The Census form is easy and quick to fill out. The Census is a count of all individuals living

in the US regardless of citizenship status. Children will not be counted in school. You

must list them so we know they are here. The Census form does not ask for your social

security number or any financial information. Please fill out the entire Census form. If you

do not answer at all, or if you leave things out, Census workers will be obligated to come to

your address. Almost every part of our daily lives is impact-

ed by the decisions based on Census data– things like public transit, school funding, and

essential local, state, federal programs.

Our Religious Education Program welcomes new students now and

throughout the summer! Contact Reli-gious Education Coordinator Mrs. Lisa Rametta at [email protected]

We are eager to serve you and to help your children to grow in faith, hope,

and love.

Statement of the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on George Floyd and the Protests in American Cities

May 31, 2020

WASHINGTON – Archbishop José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles and President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has issued a statement on George Floyd and the protests in American cities that have taken place over the last several days. This follows the Friday statement from seven U.S. bishop chairmen of committees within the USCCB.

Archbishop Gomez’s full statement follows:

The killing of George Floyd was senseless and brutal, a sin that cries out to heaven for justice. How is it possible that in America, a black man’s life can be taken from him while calls for help are not answered, and his killing is recorded as it happens? I am praying for George Floyd and his loved ones, and on behalf of my brother bishops, I share the outrage of the black community and those who stand with them in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and across the country. The cruelty and violence he suffered does not reflect on the majority of good men and women in law enforcement, who carry out their duties with honor. We know that. And we trust that civil authorities will investigate his kill-ing carefully and make sure those responsible are held accountable. We should all understand that the protests we are seeing in our cities reflect the justified frustration and anger of millions of our brothers and sisters who even today experience humiliation, indignity, and unequal opportunity only because of their race or the color of their skin. It should not be this way in America. Racism has been tolerated for far too long in our way of life. It is true what Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, that riots are the language of the unheard. We should be doing a lot of listening right now. This time, we should not fail to hear what people are saying through their pain. We need to finally root out the racial injustice that still infects too many areas of American society. But the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost. Let us keep our eyes on the prize of true and lasting change. Legitimate protests should not be exploited by persons who have different values and agendas. Burning and looting communities, ruining the livelihoods of our neighbors, does not advance the cause of racial equality and human dignity.

We should not let it be said that George Floyd died for no reason. We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our com- mitment to fulfill our nation’s sacred promise — to be a beloved community of life, liberty, and equality for all.
