Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Orations for Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord
In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m explaining the revised Roman Missal orations that were not on a Sunday last year. May our reflections on
these theologically rich, deeply beautiful orations, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in FAITH!
Good Friday: A Most Unique Day. The main rite on Good Friday, The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord, is not a Mass; in fact, by ancient custom, no consecration takes place on this day. The Holy Communion we receive is consecrated the night before, at Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Nor is there an Entrance Chant or opening hymn; the Priest and ministers simply prostrate themselves, laying on the sanctuary floor as they did at their Ordination - this time in total silence. For what could we say or do in light of Christ’s Death on the Cross for us? Then all rise as the Priest, without greeting the people or even saying “Let us pray” offers one of the following Prayers; it is not even called a Collect!
Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord - Prayer
Remember your mercies, O Lord, and with your eternal protection sanctify your servants, for whom Christ your Son, by the shedding of
his Blood, established the Paschal Mystery.
Or:
O God, who by the Passion of Christ your Son, our Lord, abolished the death inherited from ancient sin by every succeeding generation, grant that just as, being conformed to him,
we have borne by the law of nature the image of the man of earth,
so by the sanctification of grace we may bear the image of the Man of heaven.
Why is it called ‘Good’ Friday? Other languages call it Sorrowful or Suffering Friday, but there’s
no definitive answer as to why it is called ‘Good’ in English. One common explanation is that ‘good’ is the Old English spelling for ‘God.’ However, both Prayers [see above] are in line with the venerable Baltimore Catechism’s reasoning: we call it ‘Good’ since on ‘Good Friday’ we saw the undeniable fact that God truly loves us more than we could ever imagine … as seen in the suffering and brutal death Jesus endured to free us from sin and death. Both Prayers balance what God did for us in Christ, and what we gained by Christ’s self-sacrifice to redeem us!
In the first option is a new composed prayer; it expresses our hope that the “mercies” of the Lord, so evident in His Passion and Death, will not only be enjoyed by all Christians, but by the whole world. Later in the rite we will offer 10 long intercessions that express our universal concern. The second option highlights the great love of God who, to redeem those who fell from grace by rejecting His law, gave His own Son up to Death … for us! Later in the rite we will adore the wood of the Cross to express our thanks for the gift of God’s Son and His Death for us! We kiss, touch or genuflect before the Cross as a sign of our commitment to follow Christ’s example of selfless love.
Prayer over the Offerings – Good Friday
[Since no Mass is permitted, there is no Offertory or Consecration, thus no Prayer over the Offerings.]
Good Friday - Prayer after Communion
Almighty ever-living God, who have restored us to life by the
blessed Death and Resurrection of your Christ, preserve in us the work of your mercy,
that, by partaking of this mystery, we may have a life unceasingly devoted to you.
Ever-Living God. Even as we proclaim the Death of the Lord, we recall that we have been restored to new life by the One who rose from the dead! For Christ conquered the endless toil, suffering and death brought into the world by
the sin of Adam and Eve. This prayer than asks God to help us remember, celebrate and live in the graces won for us by Christ, and to share them with those who do not yet believe. Who can take part in Good Friday’s rites and go home unchanged, unmoved or unrepentant? The rite ends with a beautiful Prayer over the People that should inspire everyone to come to the 3 PM service on Good Friday:
May abundant blessing, O Lord, we pray, descend upon your people,
who have honored the Death of your Son in the hope of their resurrection:
may pardon come, comfort be given, holy faith increase,
and everlasting redemption be made secure. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSIONFirst Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7
Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by Godto reach out to others. He also describes this individual'swillingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that withGod's help, he will not be disgraced.Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God,but took on human form. He humbled himself enough toaccept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted him andwants us to respect Jesus' name and worship him.Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with theapostles, where Jesus tells them he will soon suffer infulfillment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that he mightbe spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Jesus,he was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus wasguilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, andsentenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus wascrucified and his body laid in a new tomb.

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEALYour contributions to the 2013 Archbishop’s
Annual Appeal makes a difference in the lives of
so many in our community. Your sacrificial
commitment to the Appeal helps educate children
in our inner city Catholic schools, serve the
spiritual needs of people at parishes located in
poor neighborhoods and assist Catholic Charities in running its
programs. To date, 397 parishioners have pledged over
$109,767.00 to the AAA. All donors, who share a portion of
what they have, are the first to benefit their own sense of
gratitude to God. Please consider this most worthy cause as
part of your tithe back to God.
OPERATION RICE BOWL
Operation Rice Bowl provides the faithful of our Archdiocese
with the opportunity to learn about and directly assist the poor
both here in our Archdiocese and overseas. It supports Catholic
Relief Service development projects designed to help families
and communities grow more food, increase their incomes and
improve their standard of living. Rice Bowls are due back Holy
Thursday.
PALM SUNDAY
THIS WEEK, we celebrate Palm Sunday. All
children through Grade 5 will be asked to come to
the Sanctuary Space in church before the Mass
begins so that when the procession begins, these
children can be part of our parade. They will then
be brought downstairs to Madonna/Rosary Rooms where the
Hanna-Barbera’s Easter Story video will be viewed. This
animated re-creation of “The Easter Story” brings to life all the
wonder and glory of what many have called “the greatest story
ever told.”
SAVE THE DATE!
Saturday, April 13 SIX of our Children's Choir members will

Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church
Rutherford, NJ + Archdiocese of Newark
Welcomes
our new
Holy Father
His Holiness,
Pope Francis
Viva El Papa!
All [us] ‘older’ Catholics have experienced more
changes and ‘firsts’ in the Church than perhaps any
Christians before us! After 455 years of Italian
Popes, we’ve seen Holy Fathers from Poland,
Germany and now Argentina! We’ve gone from “et
cum spiritu tuo” to “And with your spirit” to “And
also with you” and back to “And with your spirit.”
There are a few places that have a Bishop’s
permission to celebrate the Tridentine ‘Latin’ Mass!
Are we going backwards? No! With respect to the
past, we are taking from the past what is still good as
we move onward to the fullness of God’s Kingdom!
What an excitingly glorious time to be a Catholic!
But not all share our joy; the naysayer and pundit will
always find something bad or wrong with everyone
and everything. [I respectfully remind them that
Jesus said we will be judged as we judge!] Sadly, as
soon as Pope Francis stepped onto the loggia and
was seen as Pope for the first time, critics began to
dig, to search for anything negative or even
questionable, to cast doubts upon the man who is
now Christ’s Vicar. But as Jesus warned, “If they
persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” [John
15:20b] So I implore you: pray each day for the
imperfect sinners God has called to be Pope,
Bishops, Priests or Deacons, Religious Sisters or
Brothers or Lay Ministers; pray for those considering
a vocation; pray for all Christians; and pray for all
those of good will who are being slandered, insulted
or persecuted for their faith.
And please join in all the Holy Week services our
Parish offers so you can, enrich, bolster and
celebrate our great Catholic Faith!
– Rev. Michael J. Kreder, Pastor

Get Involved In Your Parish
Check out the many parish ministries, groups and
organizations listed in the bulletin; with many
Masses, funerals, sacraments, three schools and
other events, there is something for everyone! Now
that our once flood-ravaged and now rebuilt Parish
Center and its new sections are FINALLY OPEN, ALL
parish ministries and groups will be sponsoring
membership drives!
Vocations & Lay Church Ministries
If God is calling you to be a liturgical minister: Altar
Server, Music Minister, Usher, Reader, etc.; a
Catechist: Religious Formation, Sacramental
Preparation Instructor;, or a Priest, Deacon, Sister or
Brother, speak to a Priest, Deacon or Religious.
Every Catholic is obligated to pray for Vocations.
For more info call 973-497-4365 or log onto the
Vocation Office on the archdiocesan website:
rcan.org/vocation. All Catholics are requested to
pray for all Priests, past, present and future!

Altar Guild/Church Cleaners

to keep our church looking as God’s House should
look. As you can imagine, the work is never done! To
join and assist them, leave your name and phone
number at the Parish Office: Attn: Altar Guild.
The Catholic Advocate
For a wholesome Catholic view of the news and local
church events subscribe to our archdiocesan
newspaper. Call 973-497-4200 for details or log onto
the Archdiocese of Newark’s website at: rcan.org to
have The Catholic Advocate mailed to your door!
Is God remembered in your will?
While concern for our own needs and the needs of
others may keep us from tithing a full 10% now, most
should be able to reach this goal in their will. Will
God and your Parish be remembered when you are
gone … in your will?
Marriage Preparation
Marriage plans should be made at least one year
before the wedding; couples should make NO other
plans until they meet with a Priest or Deacon. Call
the parish office for a Marriage Policy Handbook and
Pre-Cana Conference or Engaged Encounter
information.
Parish Registration
All Roman Catholics living within our parish
boundaries or who regularly worship here should
officially register; if you did NOT receive an Easter
mailing, you may not be registered! Obtain a
registration form from a Priest or Deacon after Mass
or during the week at the parish office or online on
our website at: www.stmaryrutherford.org
We strongly encourage you to register, even if you do
not plan to use envelopes, so you can be on our
mailing list. Only registered members of the parish,
who fulfill all other canonical [Church Law]
requirements are eligible to obtain Sponsor
[Godparent] Certificates, letters of recommendation
or other documentation.
Baptismal Preparation Class
Expectant parents should call the parish office during
pregnancy to register for the mandatory Pre-Baptism
Class. Godparents are strongly encouraged to
attend, and others are welcome. Upon registration, a
Parish Baptismal Policy Booklet is sent to you to
read before choosing godparents or attending the
class. Be sure your proposed sponsor fulfills all
requirements before asking them; we strictly follow
Church law in determining godparents’ or sponsors’
eligibility.
Godparent [Sponsor] Requirements
Church law states that Godparents/Sponsors must:
* be a Baptized and Confirmed Catholic who attends
weekly Mass and receives Eucharist
* be at least 16 years of age [exceptions possible]
* NOT be one of the parents
* lead a moral life in keeping with Church teaching,
and be a good Catholic role model
* if married, be married according to Church law
* be a registered member of their own current parish
from which they must obtain an eligibility
certificate; we can only give eligibility certificates to
those registered in our parish!
Since only one Catholic Godparent is required for
Baptism, a baptized member of another Christian
church [but not a Catholic or former Catholic] may
serve as a Christian Witness. Since Godparents
renew their baptismal promises during the Rite of
Baptism, a non-baptized person cannot serve in this
role.
Pastoral Care of the Sick and Dying
Contact the Catholic chaplain via the hospital’s
Pastoral Care Office upon admission; chaplains are
forbidden by law from viewing hospital rosters, so
you must contact them. Parish ministers try to visit
area hospitals; if you or a loved one is hospitalized,
call the parish office and give the patient’s name,
hospital, room number and other pertinent
information.
NOTE: Mass Intentions are available for dates in the
very near future; call the Parish Office to schedule a
Mass Intention! 6

Divorce & Remarriage
Annulments & Declarations of Nullity
Are you confused about Church teaching on divorce,
annulment and remarriage? A VALID marriage must
be freely, truthfully entered into by a couple who
knows each other as best as possible and intend to
fulfill the ideals of marriage. If the bride or groom is
CATHOLIC, the marriage MUST be performed in a
CATHOLIC church, by a VALID CATHOLIC PRIES T or
DEACON, according to CATHOLIC rites or with
EXPLICIT PERMISSION elsewhere and/or by another
officiant with permission; if these criteria were not
followed, the marriage might be invalid. If a Catholic
is married in any other way, that marriage may be
INVALID and may be ‘convalidated’ by a Priest or
Deacon – IF there are no invalidating factors like a
previous valid marriage. Catholics in invalid
marriages may not receive Eucharist or be
Godparents, but they are NOT excommunicated! If
you, or anyone you know is in a questionably valid
marriage, PLEASE contact a Priest or Deacon or
Parish Staff member to begin the process of
ascertaining validity and/or any remedial action that
can, may, or should be taken.
For more information, speak to a Priest or Deacon or
contact the Marriage Tribunal at 973-497-4145 or the
archdiocesan website, www.rcan.org. In Christian
charity, please pass this information on to those who
need the truth, who need the facts, but who do not
need hearsay, misinformation or other well-intended,
though often harmful, help. Strongly encourage
those in these situations to speak to a Priest or
Deacon.

this Service. Since the Eucharist is not consecrated at this Service
[it is consecrated the night before] all ministers should go to the
Blessed Sacrament chapel NO LATER THAN 2:45 p.m. to fill
their pyx with the required number of hosts; the pyx should then be
left on the tray in the Blessed Sacrament chapel. The tray of pxys
will be brought to the Altar during the Service; after Communion
the ministers will be dismissed to bring Holy Communion to the
Homebound. Since the sick and homebound share so intimately in
the Lord’s cross, they deserve to receive Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament on Good Friday; please make every effort to bring them
the Gift of Our Eucharistic Lord on this most solemn day.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Those who volunteered to give their own personal
reflections of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday
evening are asked to arrive at Church at 7:00 p.m. for
a brief rehearsal for this evening. Please sit in the
front left section. Your friends and families are
welcome to sit with you.

masses to show the support of the parish at this sorrowful
time. They serve as Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, ushers, Altar Servers and assist in any way
necessary. Anyone interested in this corporal work of mercy,
is most welcome to join us and participate as their time and
talent permits. Please call the Parish Office [201] 438-2200 for

GOOD FRIDAY
Holy Land Collection
Our help is needed now, as in the days of Saint Francis, to protect
the Holy Places of the Holy Land. Even more important, our help
is needed to protect the Holy Name of Our Lord in this troubled
land, which he chose for His birth, sacrificial death and victorious
resurrection. We protect more than the stones of ancient shrines
from the ravages of time or armies or tourists. In an unbelieving
world we express and protect the very idea of what it means to
follow Christ. Your gift will give life to some and hope to others,
lighting candles of faith in darkened shrines and lives, even
becoming the very bread and wine of our daily Eucharist. The
Annual Collection for the Shrines and people of the Holy Land will
be taken up on Good Friday, March 29th during the Celebration
of Christ’s Passion and Death and during the Stations of the
Cross. Thank you
BLESSED EASTER WATER
Because of the generosity of COLLINS CALHOUN FUNERAL
HOME - [201] 939-1050 - containers of Holy Water will be
available at our Baptismal Font after all Easter Masses. Please be
sure to stop by and take ONE home with you. Thank you Angelo
and Debra Mania for all you do for us!
MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013 - 7:30 p.m.
If you are participating in this most humbling experience and are
having your feet washed during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper,
volunteers are asked to arrive at Mass by 7:00 p.m. and look for
Linda Verdino in the Narthex for instructions and stations.
BRING BELLS TO THE EASTER SUNDAY MASSES!
Psalm 81:1 tells us to “Ring out your joy to God our strength.”
All are invited to bring handbells [any bell will do] to the Easter
Sunday and Sundays in Easter Masses. An ancient custom calls for
bells to be rung during the Gloria, the church’s great hymn of
praise on both those nights to mark our entrance into the Sacred
Triduum on Holy Thursday night and to end the readings from the
Old Testament during the Easter Vigils’s liturgy of the Word and
prepare us to hear the Good news of the new Covenant sealed with
the blood of the risen Christ! The ringing of bells were so well
received last year that this year we are asking you to bring them to
all the Easter Masses. So, bring bells to ring during the Gloria!

the way you live your life. Call (201) 438-2476 - ext. 140 or
